Mournfang's not cutting it for me

original thread ↗

So I've seen the various conversions people are doing to make MFC appealing to look at but I'm still a bit turned off.  Most people are doing rhinox, to which I already have 6 FW models.  The others I've seen are cats or wolves to which I'm confused because the fluff states they are bear-like creatures.

Has anyone seen any conversions done with a more bear-like appearance?

Best I can come up with is to use the lowrider conversion and just leave the terribly unbelievable tusk teeth thingies off completely.  This MAY work but those hind legs still suck pretty bad size wise.

Any other ideas?

As long as they're on the right base and have Ogres riding them, I don't think people would much care if you modelled them as ostriches.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

I guess I'm not so much asking what people will allow me to use but rather if anyone has seen a more fluff-accurate conversion out there they can direct me to.

I want to see this. Give the ostriches the Mournfang tusks, that'd be awesome lol...

As for Olag's dilemma... I dunno persay, are you willing to look outside the GW range? I'm sure there are model bears out there that would be of the right scale... Idk, I kinda like the look of the Mournfang m'self, although the hind legs are pretty crummy to put together :P

I cut the tusks down to believable proportions on mine and they look 1000x better, almost like boar tusks.  I hate the way some of these new models have such comically oversized teeth that it'd be impossible for the animal to eat anything.  Thundertusk, Chimera, and Mournfangs come to mind.  Reminds me of this old Flying Circus sketch...

As far as the hind legs go, how are you with green stuff?  I don't think it would be too hard to thicken them up and mold some fur texture onto them.

Putting the fluff aside altogether (which is becoming more of a necessity for me with these newer army books), if I was going to proxy anything, I'd use the WoC Dragon Ogre models.  They look absolutely dynamite IMO, and it'd be easy enough to mod the chaos bits on them for more of a Great Maw theme.

I can't actually find the reference to Mournfang being "bear-like creatures".
But that doesn't really matter because I'm using Orc Boar heads to make mine into giant Razorback pigs.
Scribor has a couple of War Bears that might fit the bill. They're designed for Dwarves o ride them but I don't see why an Ogre would look out of place.

Their tears will be a perfect addition to the Butcher's cauldron.
Good info all!

Scibor's war-bears are on my list as a possible solution but I've also found these 32mm scale gems!

This comes on a 50x100 chariot base:

And this comes on a 50x50 base but hangs off it pretty far:

So all in all, if I go cat or bear I think I found my solution.  I'll keep this thread posted on what I decide in the end.
If only that cat came on a smaller base.....hello third sabretusk.
Those who live by the sword, get shot by those who don't.

After all was said and done I opted for the Scibor minis.  Cheaper and easier to find.
modelled them as ostriches.

I'm waiting for someone to do this now.
So here is an update and I'm really looking for opinions so please comment away!

Scibor bear (rider doesn't fit in an upright position yet so I just placed him temp):

Here's another update with the Kraan bear:

Kraan Bear looks better in my opinion.
My immediate thoughts are the Kraan bear is better due to the height and length being slightly more.  Then again I look at the size of the Scibor Bear's head and think that looks somewhat better.

Feedback appreciated!
I agree. The scibor bear is a nice model, but it's too small for an ogre... The pose and length of the Kraan one suits an ogre better.

Thanks!  Both bears kinda imitate the look and stance of Orc BoarBoyz but the Kraan Bear less so and I think that's what pushes me toward that model.  Ogres have short but stout legs where Orcs are all up top.  So having an Ogre riding something that is equal size seems physically wrong.  Plus I always think of Orcs as playfully goofy killy smashy and Ogres as true grit killy smashy.
