- Greetings all!
This being my first, (of likely many ogresk posts) i'll have to explain some of the detail.
I'm going to continue this thread in the hope that the Ogre Stronghold team will be able to assist me in ultimate victory in this campaign.
Here is the story line:
Our campaign organizer has taken what he likes out of 3 different campaigns and combined it into one large campaign.
Here is the skinny:
Participating armies:
- Ogre Kingdoms - me
- Dark Elves - brother
- Wood Elves - friend
- Dwarves - campaign leader
My brother and I are ex-40k players.. which ironically is a HUGE detriment to starting newly in fantasy (which we both are new i've played my ogres a total of 3 times) I once owned a tomb kings army (about 3000 points) which i hated and promptly sold. Only having played it about 5 - 6 times. I wasn't able to make the jump to fantasy at that time. Now, being older and possibly wiser I have decided that fantasy is more my idea of fun but tactically i'm having trouble transitioning well.
Set up: each army in the campaign has 5 1000 point banners. We uses this obviously to take territories from opponents. We each claimed our initial territories and made our first moves. My first moves moved banners into a variety of areas expanding rapidly as a true Ogre army would. Turns out however that my brother ended up attacking me first in in a mountainous region.
The Battle:
So its 1k vs 1k Dark Elves vs Ogre Kingdoms.
Rules: Mountainous area thus the terrain was all crags and LOS blocking stuff so it was difficult for both armies. We also we're not allowed to tailor our armies to face the opponent unless we successfully scouted one another.
I successfully scouted his army yet deiced to make no changes. here is the army set up we both had.
Ogres:
3x Naked Bulls
3x Naked Bulls
1x Bruiser w/ Heavy armor, Luck gonbo and great weapon
3x Iron Guts with Standard and musician (joined by bruiser)
3x Yhetees
2x Leadbelchers
20x Gnoblar fighters
8x Gnoblar Trappers
1x Gorger
Dark Elves:
20x Corsairs banner musician
20x Spearmen banner musician
1x Highborn with great weapon and 4+ ward save
1x Sorceress with 6+ ward saves and + 1 power dice
1x Cold one chariot
2x Reaper Bolt Throwers
The Battle:
We set terrain it was decent for yhetees to have good cover and the set up seemed ok.
I ended up going first - not sure if that was a good thing or not.
Turn 1 me.
Advanced all units gnoblar fighters on far right of the board - ended up worthless all game which was a big mistake on my part.
Trappers were on his side the board moving twords the hills the bolt throwers were on and threw scrap at the chariot ( no wounds no surprise)
Bruiser and IGs were behind a unit of naked bulls which was set up to charge his spear block on turn 2
Yhetees set up just outside of a bolder garden ready to charge the block of corsairs + his general for turn 2
Moved Lead belchers to attempt a shot on something. (ended up not being useful because everything was in combat)
His turn 1:
Moved spearmen close move corsairs into boulder garden Shot lead belchers with sorcerer killed 1 shot bull unit in front of IGs with bolt throwers did 2ish wounds. Chariot was stupid
Round 2 me. Gorger enters battle beside the one bolt thrower using it to block LOS from the other bolt thrower.
Charged with naked screening bulls to spearmen, and yhettes to corsairs + general. ( ended up that was stupid should have set up a flank charge)
Moved trappers and hucked scrap again (no wounds) moved lead belcher again left IGs + general in placed turned the other bull unit to end up with a flank charge on spear block (was assuming it would kill the naked bulls)
Combat: Bulls and yhettes lost combat, bulls ran got over run and spears ended up on the IGs and general seting up a nice flank charge by the second bull unit Yettees passed test and held in combat.
His turn 2:
Shot up gorger with sorcerer and bolt thrower (2 wounds total) moved chariot rest was CC
Combat: Yhettees lost combat and run. IGs and Genreal lose combat and run but got away from spear men setting up a flank charge Corsairs pursue yhettes but don't make it out of the boulder garden.
My turn 3:
Gorger changers bolt thrower, 2nd bulls flank charge block of spear men lead belcher tries to shoot sorcer but is barely short...
trappers move towards bolt thrower. Yhettes don't rally and get ever closer to edge of board. general rallies with his 2 IGs
Combat: bull flank charge kills spear men. gorger kills 1 bolt thrower
His turn 3. Sorcerer tries to kill gorger fails. Corsairs turn to move near remaining lead belcher. (couldn't charge no LOS) and other reaper bolt thrower fails to kill gorger (he rocks) chariot gets dangerously close now
My turn 4: Gorger charges 2nd bolt thrower, lead belcher charges corsair block (stupid move was attempting a set up for the naked bulls but forgot they could reform after wacking the LB)
General sets up to avoid chariot
naked bulls set up flank charge corsair block
Yhettes run off board edge (yay)
Combat: LB causes fear and dosn't die but still loses combat and runs Corsair block reforms to face bulls
Gorger kills second bolt thrower
His turn 4:
Charges LB with chariot
Charges naked bulls with corsair block
sorcerer finally kills gorger
Combat:
LB stands ans shoots 2 shots no hits get maulled by chariot and chariot slams in to remaining IG and general
Corsair block wins combat ogers flee corsairs pursue and over run
Turn 5: move Gnobo trappers behind hill for cover from sorcerer... thats pretty much it.
Combat: Chariot kills remaining IG and causes general to flee chariot pursues and smushes general.
His turn 5 sorcerer kills 25% of trappers they rally on a 4 haha
Turn 6: gnobos declare charge on sorcerer she flees
His turn 6. gnobo get 4 kills rally on a 3 HAHA
In the end it was a massacre. This is to be expected when I play stupid.
Campaign wise I ended up rolling snake eyes on the recovery table netting a total loss of the banner (in the first turn ouch!)
My views of mistakes:
1. VERY BAD USE OF GNOBO FIGHTERS
2. should have used the yhetees move to set up a flank charge to cut ranks on the corsairs.
3. didn't put musicians in the naked bull units. would have helped in several occasions.
NOW: I solicite all feedback from the MAW (eg you guys) Let me know what mistakes you believe I made either tactically, or with the list itself. LET THIS ATROCITY NEVER HAPPEN AGAIN.
thanks in advance!
Gnoblar....... nature's fortunate mistake
