Basing

Hey all. Finally getting around to basing my army.

Question is should I glue the models to the base first then base them? Or do people attach the model after?

Attaching it after looks to be a bit dodgy to me not getting full contact to the base making them brittle.

I always attach mine first.

exactly what i intend to do when i get home from work this afternoon.

glueing them to the basing itself. (in my case balast) they will be constantly coming off, however i am still afraid that they will look like they are walking through the ground and not on it.

will just have to go light on the balast/sand around the feet.

I glue on model to the base before too.
But I have the feeling that the sand/grass I add makes the model sink into the base (I have painted up a lot of dwarfs and I never really see their shoes!). I have started to glue pieces of plastic card under the feet of my ogres to lift them up a bit from the base before sanding and painting.

So I glue the extra heel on the model (cut it from leftover movement tray) and then glue it to the base, add PVA glue and sand/cork pieces. Sometimes I add a PVA/black paint undercoat to the sand to make it stick better before spray undercoating the whole model and base.

Alternatively, you can pin the model to the base after basing to make it stick better : )

Ogres are big heavy critters! If they're walking on sandy soil or grass etc they're going to sink in a bit (or a lot!) so it's all good!

I glue mine onto the base first for a better grip!

It would really depend on how detailed you're going to get with your bases.
Generally, the more detailed the base is, the more likely it is that the model will be added after work has been done, maybe not completed, but after the base has been started and before the whole model gets varnished.
For example, my Hunter's base will have a significant amount of work done to it before he gets glued on, but if I decide to add snow the the base, at least some of it (a final dusting) will be added after the Hunter has been.
