If our BSBs could take magic equipment...

original thread ↗

Alright, a "what if" scenario. If our BSBs could take a magic banner and magic equipment (magic banner does not count towards item limit) what would be some good combos?

I can't see anything overly broken, but a BSB with some better protection and ward saves would be really nice.

Chaos Lord     Warsphinx            Bray Shaman
Afternoon,

How about the following:

Impenetrable
Armour of Silvered Steel & Dragonbane Gem
2+ armour save, 2+ ward against fire based attacks.
Almost immune to fire based attacks and low strength poison.
Either 2 hand weapons or great weapon.

IF will not increase the armour save any further and there are enough wards, to get by without the parry save.

Stubborn
HA, Dragonbane Gem, Enchanted Shield & Crown of Command.
3+ armour save, 2+ ward against fire based attacks & stubborn.

Ethereal Killer
HA, Dragonbane Gem, Enchanted Shield & sword of Antiheroes (or any magic weapon)
3+ armour save, 2+ ward against fire based attacks.

If you can get trollguts off, then they also has a 4+ regeneration save.
Not sure you understood the question.

If he could take both, everyone would take rune maw and standard defensive stuff.
Yeah, Runemaw plus defensive equipment would be awesome.

Good Evening,

"If our BSBs could take a magic banner and magic equipment (magic banner does not count towards item limit) what would be some good combos?"

I do not believe that I have misunderstood you. You have asked, "what would be good combos?"

I for one would not take the Rune Maw, it is of no use against Purple Sun or Mindrazor opponents.
Standard of discipline is much better.

I would always make the BSB defensive as his death gives the opponent extra points.
I think you would see more Bulls units because of Standard of Discipline on the BSB.
Not to argue the point, but if you didnt misunderstand him, I'm curious as to why you didn't mention a banner at all in your first post.
Hi Juan,

Just read my reply. I can see that it could have come across as a bit feisty (I apologise if that is the case), it was not my intention!

I read "what would be good combos?" as being for the magical equipment and Ninja was not interested in the banner. Your argument is very valid, however!
As above I would take one of Badmarsh's set ups + Standard of Discipline.

However I think what Badmarsh was getting at was not avoiding Ninja's question, but voicing his own opinion that it would not change how he kitted out his BsB even if he could take a standard + Magical items. I believe this is what he meant.
However kitting him out with Sword Of Strife + HA + Enchanted Shield + Potion of Speed + Rampagers Standard - could be quite fun! :) Additional giving him fencers blades could also be usefull and only 1 less attack than with SoS :)

Mr McSheehy merci beaucoup for your correct understanding and ensuring that Jeremy Kyle was not needed to diffuse the situation :p

A Gnoblar for your skills and time.

Badmarsh
Thank you Badmarsh... Yes that is what I pictured when I read the reply's lol

I wouldn't put it down to skills as such, just an open mind and some common sense :P

I'm gonna do it from the other way then...

He could have the standard of disc
Or
Rune maw
Or
Ranger standard
Or
Any other standard.

How's that for some common sense?
Now do I get to play your part and tell you your missing the point of the question?
Or do you expect me to be more mature and accept that that is they way YOU choose to run your BsB regardless if he had access to Magical banners and Magical items?

As for the common sense stand point, if that is how you run you BsB then yes :) you hit the nail on the head :)

You clearly don't understand the OP either.  He asked for hypothetical combinations you could run on your bsb if he can take both magic standards and magic equipment.  That means, for those of you in Rio Linda, that he wants ideas for both...not just one or the other.  So for example, one might say:

Armor of Destiny + DHB
Or
Armor of Silvered Steel, dragonbane gem + rangers standard

Badmarsh, and apparently you, didn't understand he wanted both, if he had just wanted magic item set ups, he wohld have said, How do you guys gear up your bsb?  But he didn't.
To say you can understand he means the set ups he wrote down were to be used wirh the standard if discipline, when he didnt even hint at it, by some mystical combination of open mindedness and common sense.....well, seems a bit odd.
"As above I would take one of Badmarsh's set ups + Standard of Discipline."

I said no where that that he intended any of those set ups provided to be used with SoD?
As for Ninja's question I have answered it sufficiently. I have also explained that Badmarsh meant no ill will by voicing his opinion that a BsB would not benefit by being able to take a magic banner and magic items simultaneously. Therefore he would not run his set ups any differently.

Badmarsh has already explained he misinterpreted Ninja's question. However he also explained why he did not post any combos' with magical banners and magical items.

I do not see what your problem is with other people having their own opinions. His post may not have directly answered Ninja's original question, however this is where people start a debate on why Badmarsh would choose not to take any banners if rules permitted. This is not where people start bickering because someone voiced an opinion different to their own!
I myself (rules permitting) would not run my BsB any different. For arguments sake I would run my Bruiser with AoD + Rune maw, providing him with a 4+ ward and a chance to "re-direct" most harmful spells before he needs to use his ward.

Ninja started this as a theoretical thread for people to voice their opinions, use their imagination and discuss the outcomes rationally and politely. I assume he did not intend for his post to end up with a pointless argument over someone voicing an opinion.

Cut it out guys - not only are people getting offended but it's also getting severely off-topic. Quite a few posts haven't contributed anything at all to the discussion at hand so I'll be getting rid of them. Please play nicer in the future and remember to hit the magical report button should issues arise.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.
Thank you for stepping in Eg Giant-Tripper.

Like I said I have already apologised to both Juan and Ninja.

As for the OP's question I believe that Rampagers standard + Fencers Blades + Potion of Speed + Enchanted Shield would be a good set up, if the rules permitted. 5 attacks, Ws 10, Initiative boost, and re-rolling charges could be deadly.

Hrm... Gleaming Pennant would be nice ... oh wait, yeah nevermind.

How about Scarecrow Banner ... oh, nope not that one either.

But seriously,

I'm really surprised to see suggestions other than Runemaw.  I just don't understand how +1 leadership (which can be carried by Ironguts / Maneaters and may be irrelevant if you take a Tyrant) or the ability to reroll charge dice (which isn't horrible, but thanks to our excellent chaff, isn't really necessary either) or Strider or +1 movement or Etc. can be even close to the ability to ignore magic missiles, hexes, and direct damage spells (including the devastating Pit of Shades, Miasma, Dwellers, etc).  I would love to hear some actual supported explanations of why if your opinion differs.

Runemaw is the single most powerful banner in available to us, with Dragonhide as a close second (again ... can be taken by Ironguts / Maneaters).  Nothing else is even remotely at that level of awesome.  I cannot think of a situation where I would chose another banner for my BSB in an all-comers list - and I would take it every time if my BSB could still carry magic items.

Hey Snark!

Good question!
I never rune the runemaw banner because I tend to run MMU style lists, therefore it only covers a small portion of my army. However the majority of players in my meta SPAM purple sun until their heart is content! If it affected purple sun however I would never leave home without it!

As for taking the rampagers standard, the majority of my local meta tends to stand back and just cast at ogres, I need to close the gap and they do not fall for chaff re-directs unfortunately. Often times it is very hard for me to get a good charge and im not generally seeing combat until T3! because most of my opponents play very reserved against ogres, even though there is only two local players. (Ogre players that is, including myself)
So the re-rolling charge distance would be a god send for me allowing combat on T2! :)
That is why I picked that over Runemaw, because it does not come into play very often with my army :(

I have to agree. Rune Maw isn't that good if you're running MMU. On the other hand, I see the value of +1D in an army with average leadership like ours, and also +1M can be wonderful, adds mobility for our already fast ogres!
