The best way to start is the Battalion box, or 2 if you can afford it. We're lucky because our battalion gives us an actual army, not just part of one, like some other boxes. You'll probably want to pick up a few other boxes (ie Mournfang, Ironblaster etc) but it's a damn good start.
Agreed, I'd start with a Battalion (2 if cash allows it) and a Firebelly and/or Butcher. That will give you a damn fine start. Then add an Ironblaster and Mournefangs. All of the above will give you effectively. 1 Lord, 1 Hero, 2 decent sized core units that will easily cover a 2k army, 4-8 Leadbelchers for ranged support, Mournefangs for troop munching and an Ironblaster for the big nasties that are out there. This should provide you with a fairly well rounded Ogre force that'll get you into the army and really show you what we are capable of.
thanks for your comments, im glad to hear that the battlion is worth buying as i know there are a lot that are not (looking at you beastmen). working out my funds and the fact ill need the armybook. it looks like ill get the battalion, a character general or sorcerer and the book. then add a regiment each weekend :).

im getting quite excited now cant wait & whats more is i didnt think id give this army a 2nd glance. im glad i have

The Beastman battalion is pretty good for it's price.

Agreed! At least around my parts the price is less (and yes you get less) and quite valuable.

thats wierd before i chose to start an ogre army i was looking at beastmen, and a fair few people told me not to bother looking at the battalion set ??

You were misled, I'm afraid. The bulk of my Beastmen army was constructed by buying the Battalion 3 times over.

Well you save roughly 20% buying it.

Yeah it's pretty good, you get 3 useful units and don't have to buy more if you get 2-3 battalions.
Chaosorc.com is where I got my Battalion Boxes for Ogre Kingdoms, they're about 20 dollars cheaper, which is pretty darn helpful.

Good luck, cant wait to see your army and welcome to the Ogre Kingdom Family!
When I played Beastmen the Battalion combined with two of the old mixed Gor/ungor boxes was the best start I could've had. The aesthetics of the Gor hadn't changed so they mixed wonderfully.

Back to Ogres: do consider buying a bag of small bases too and sticking the Baggage Gnoblars on them for use as actual Gnoblars. I have found recently that units of 10 with trappers is an incredibly infuriating unit for hordes to deal with.

thanks for the info, do you get baggage gnoblars with all the ogres sets. as i do want 3 or 4 large units of gnoblars in my army and if i can get away with buying 1 or 2 boxes less i can add something else to the army.

on the beastman side im once again at a 50/50 who to collect so im going to start both and come up with a background and fluff to interlink them as allies. plus ill have an extra army to boot perfect.

I think that the only way Ogres will ally with Beastmen, is if the Beastmen provide the feast...and we all know how much Ogres enjoy a side of beef :D
Sorry for slow reply here!

I can't remember how many gnoblars you get, but you should be able to make up about ten, which is what I found useful for a single unit for my purposes. Can always ask other players for any spare gnoblars, there's tonnes. Most Maneaters come with a single Gnoblar too, and the Tyrant comes with about two or three.
