my 2500pt Skraag list

original thread ↗

hey all ive come to you wonderful folks again with another list idea. I really like Skraag, the idea of him being the voice of the maw has me really digging him as a character so ive made a list with him. I appreciate any advice but keep in mind I want this to be a skraag list and skraag without gorgers is giving up a lot of what he does. I know im going to get suggestions to run mournfangs but I really don't understand the love they get. D3 impact hits on the charge and then a few str 4 and str 5 attacks, maybe its the t4 monsterous cavalry that's killing it for me since my plague drones are t5. My army gets its str 4 attacks from my bulls and it gets its str 6 from the guts so I feel 5 str 5 attacks with killing blow is better IMO.

Lord
Skraag

Hero
lvl 2 butcher
lore of beasts

Bruiser w/BSB
Rune Maw

Core
10x ogres w/full cmd and extra hand weapon 5 wide
13x iron guts w/full cmd (everyone goes in here) 5 wide

Special
5x gorgers running around by themselves

Rare
2x Iron blaster
Can someone please chime in before I lay down several hundred dollars on the list  :>D
The list looks fine however I would not take so many gorgers in a competitive scene :)

Skraag is a good model (pain to build) hard to kill, but getting that tally up can be a problem unless you throw him against chaff units like Gnoblars + Goblins!
On elite units his tally will creep up and you will "maybe" get unbreakable by the end of turn 6!
I would not take Skraag personally I would rather take another firebelly and a normal SM.
Just my 2 cents :) Skraag is somewhere between a Tyrant and a SM  but not quite as effective as either, he is tougher than his SM brothers and has more attacks/WS however he can ONLY run maw (no problem there) but he cannot be kitted to be more killy or more tanky. This is where I think he lacks, If he were 350pts base with a 100pts magic allotment I would take him no doubt. Alas this is not the case and I just find him to be a little over priced for what he brings to the table :) The tally is handy but it will take a while to get it up and the only fast way is to throw him against basic troops which probably cost 1/4 of his points.
Also the Regen save is only for him, not his unit (which sucks) so you still rely on Troll guts. The gorgers can really mess with peoples plans! but they may not turn up until turn 3 assuming a T2 charge by Skraag, if your enemy is that stupid :P If they know his rules they will just try and stay away. They don't want that tally moving up and those gorgers causing even more of a problem than they already will.

P.s - Gorgers don't work well against mobile empire or Brets :) WE's even cause problems for them.

I emerge from my cave of inactivity to say:  Scraag rocks, and the more gorgers the better.  Before life got nuts last year I set a challenge to myself to play 10 games in a row utilizing Scraag and no fewer than 10 gorgers.  Seven of those have been completed, and my record is 6:1 (Damn you Skaven!!!).  Technically I haven't broken my challenge yet...my fatties have been gathering dust for over six months now.  The games have all been tons of fun and the big guy has, in my experience, been far from mcsheehy's analysis; he combines the best parts of a slaughtermaster and tyrant, not just some mediocre parts of each.
Ogre Achievements:  22/101
Last Achievement:  One for the Cauldron

New book record:  6/1/3
Last game:  WoC...Win
Running a Skraag list, I'd also include more Gorgers and benefit more from his ability. However you need to focus and trapping your enemy in a tarpit so the gorgers get a chance to rear/flank charge them. Dont front charge a gorger - it dies.

Also make sure Skraag combat weak stuff for a higher kill rate (in 8th the gamestyle is more defensive so a Skraag list might be a 7ed leftover and hard to make perform in 8ed, Im afraid).

So I would consider a more MSU-like list for mobility and lots of gnoblars running around to pin down opponents being steadfast and redirecting things Skraag's unit cannot kill.
