Your thoughts on skraag

original thread ↗

I was looking at my list and my generic slaughtermaster was 390pts with nothing but a ward and gurts sickle and then I saw that skraag was 425pts and he looks like an absolute monster. I know you have to run a few gorgers to really bring him from good to great and gorgers don't look bad IMO. Whats everyones thoughts?
I think he's a decent idea even if you don't run Gorgers.

He is kinda a compromise between a Tyrant and a SM.

He's a Lvl4 with gutmagic, but he's also Ld9, has killing blow, and str5(IIRC) that gets nastier as he kills stuff.

He does have to go in a unit because of not having his regen save naturally.

I've tried him a few times, never in a tournament though. Gorgers aren't needed to make him work at all.
Since he has Ld 9 you can forgo the Standard of Discipline on your guts and put the banner of Swiftness on them to get him into combat faster, the sooner he gets his regen save the better.
Game's the same, just got more fierce.

Im glad ppl seems to atleast call him decent, that's not normally the case for named characters as im sure you all know. I just figured for an extra 35pts I get +2WS +1 Toughness killing blow, frenzy so that seemed worth it. Loosing Gurts sickle kinda sucks but the trade off is definetly for the better. I still think I will run 4x gorgers with him since gorgers have a ton of attacks with killing blow. I will probably run them in grps of 2 to take further advantage of skraags abilities. Thanks for the thoughts guys. Now my question is, do you ambush with them or do you deploy them?
Ambushers have to ambush, can't deploy them normally.
I enjoy using Gorgers, so if you do too it's a nice themed list.

Skrag is ridiculously good. He's frenzied, so make sure he doesn't get kited around, but he's also a terror causer which is nice. He's also T6 and needs to cause one CC wound to get regen - which his impact hit should do. Can only use Maw mind, so make sure your list works well with that. And don't forget that since he's frenzied and has two hand weapons he's rocking 6 attacks total at a good WS, so he can fight a fair few things in a challenge.

As for running Gorgers, I've never tried groups of 2 - but then I like more versatility, and Gorgers are good at being a bit of a problem. You can send them into the back of a block and that'll keep them occupied for a while.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
You can also run him without Gorgers, which is the most competitive thing to do IMO. Or maybe just take 1-2 of them.

So I just got skrag, and I was gonna run him alone, but I wanted to know if that wasn't such a great idea. What kind of unit so u think he should run with. My thought was to run a thundertusk and put skrag with some bulls so he would get his attacks off first??
Bulls or Ironguts.

Alone is never a good idea for Characters, especially your general.  He doesn't start with his regen save so he's just begging for a cannon shot. Even if he did have his regen save it would be a bad idea.

There's no real reason not to run him in a unit. He's essentially a Tyrant combined with a Slaughtermaster, treat him as such. Thundertusk's hardly necessary, he's very capable in his own right.
