1500 pt first tournament list

original thread ↗

Hi all,

this is my first bash at a tournament (Invasion) at the end of May and this is my first draft at a 1500pt list:

308 SLAUGHTERMASTER (Lv3) - Maw, IF, Gruts Sickle, Dragonbane Gem

158 BRUISER - BSB, IF, Heavy Armour, Talisman of Preservation.

379 IRONGUTS (7) - FC, Look Out Gnoblar

21   SABRETUSK
21   SABRETUSK

290 MOURNFANG CAVALRY (4) - HA, IF, Bellower

170 IRONBLASTER
170 IRONBLASTER

1497 pts

The reason Im taking IG over Bulls is that I dont have any Bulls and dont have time to paint any up!
Gotta have the 2 Ironblasters for the cheese.

Other than that, Im open to suggestions.

many thanks
On paper the list looks great.
But I see a tendency around here that a 4-pack of 'fangs rarely perform great as they are the targeting of everything evil your opponent can dish out. Also the ironblasters can be difficult to make enough points - just dont get disappointed : )

For the characters I'd switch the sickle for a dispel scroll to keep your general alive (double 1's happens) and I would switch the ironfist on the BSB for a greatweapon

Ironguts are great - sure, they die fast but they are killy!

If you can spare a mournfang I'd use only 3 and then go for a magic banner (that also goes for the ironguts! +1Ld banner)

All the extra points I'd use for gnoblars (if you have any ready?). All the units you have listed have very specific purposes and it would not be good if your eg. ironguts get stuck killing zombies whil the rest of your army is killed away. So use gnoblar drops to speed bump unwanted enemies and makes sure the fangs get the juicy charges : )

Good luck!

I agree with Joakim on everything he says :) But having just played 2 1500pts games with a similar list to the one he suggests I felt I was missing something. Since those two games I will run a list similar to yours :)

First I'll start by commenting on your list piece by piece then I will list the changes I would make a why :)

SM - GOOOD :) Gruts is a must have in my opinion. with level 4 at 1500pts your casting like a level 7! Not many people will out magic you.
Bruiser - Take AoD same points as HA + Talisman :) just my OCD kicking in lol
Guts - Well what can I say :) SoD in here?
MFC - Cant complain
Iron Blaster - 2 wont make you any friends :P

Changes -
Drop 1 Iron Blaster and bulk your army out.
MFC - Split them into two units (if you lose 1 Ld8 isn't much good on a test) At least in 2 units of 2 only 1 will run and its two targets. Stick gleaming pendant in there for a 1 off re-roll if you keep them as a unit of 4.
SM - Make him level 4, gruts, Crown of command with saved points from 1 iron blaster.
Bruiser - eh... AoD... just to keep my OCD happy lol
Guts - With remaining points you could bulk to a unit of 10 and run 4x4 with characters.
Gives you more ablative wounds and more attacks.

Over all the changes will provide you with -
Stubborn unit of guts (with buffs ofc!)
MFC are more likely to stick around with gleaming pendant.
Guts have more wounds before they actually take a "hit" to their combat prowess.
Losing 1 iron blaster wont hurt you at 1500pts, anything it can do your guts can do too. Albeit not as effectively but they still can do it.

Thanks for the advice.

I think I deffo need to bulk the army out...I guess I could drop and ironblaster....although the cheesefactor would be worth it with 2 ha ha.

Ill play around with your suggestions this evening and Ill let you know how it looks.

Thanks again
I'd disagree with dropping an ironblasters. All of a sudden the meta has changed. Chariots & big ol' daemon princes are out there & the cannons are the only thing to get rid of then prior to them slamming up your arse. Just my thoughts.
With the release of the new daemons. Yes Daemon princes are going to be seen more frequently, same with their new cannon.
While the second cannon will be useful against those targets, what happens when the majority of your opponents bring RnF as is very common at 1500pts. Those big guys eat A LOT of points in 1500pts games. In 8th ed it is VERY easy to kill them with a cannon shot or two, atleast in my meta most people avoid big guys in sub 2000pts because its just easy VP with the ease of cannons and how cheap they are! (annoying really)
I would love to field Daemon princes all day long but with the amount of cannons out there is it just not worth it! So I stick to MMU and spread my points. Otherwise I will lose 1/4 of my army on turn 1. That will deter most people from taking these big gribblies. However a Monster Mash Lizzy list will be problematic lol. It works both ways but I would rather gear my list towards taking the "majority" of players than the "minority".

True but if u face an msu army then the iron blaster is still a strong chariot so works out well there too. Multi purpose so perfect for small games.
For 1500 pt I doubt you will need two iron blasters. As mentioned, you wont see that many targets and even if you do the use of the iron blaster will be most useful during the deployment denying optimal positions for your opponent.  The key here is that you can get more diversity in the army by taking man eaters and/or mournfangs. Running 2x 3 fangs in 1500 pt will make your opponent cry like a girl and a unit of even 3-4 ME will add more damage output.
Worst case the two iron blasters (or 2x 3 fangs) will make the opponent cry out cheese.

Try it out and let us know - we will all benefit more from hearing your experience then discuss meta gaming!
My guess is that the 4 MF will not perform well (as judged from other reports here) as you only 3 targets which all be easy to redirected and shot (any opponent bringing a cannon or stone thrower is an issue for your list sadly)

Good luck : )

I can see the pros and cons of running the second Ironblaster.

As for more mournfangs.....I dont have time to create any more before the tourny (end May), but I DO have some Maneaters that could be fun.

What loadout would you recommend for a small unit of ME? (Pistols or AHW??)

I will have a look at what changes I can make then i will deffo have to try and play a few games to see what works.

Thanks for the advice
Cool!

I highly encourage you to give us feedback to how the army performed ; )

For small ME groups I like to use AHW (to keep cost down and shooting wont matter anyway) and for stubborn/shiftstride/scout, with the two latter being preferred. even 3 scouting ME with ahw will dish out 15 WS4 S5 attacks and likely impact and stomps hits at S5 and shiftstride will increase your odds of getting into the battle on the first charge (average charge distance is 15-16") while the potential d3 impact hits are just a bonus

I agree with Joakim on all but the ME's :)

I like to run mine with brace, poison, sniper for shooting up some BsB's and generals :)
Remember once got a shot off and killed a paladin (with no ward save!?) brain gobblered the unit next turn and it fled lol. anyway... I believe that the brace + poison combo could give you more utility and also helps with units with scary standards! (like the O&G one that nullifies magic weapons/armour!?)
Just my 2 cents :)

Well, it looks like I may not get my Ironblasters sorted in time for the tourny...pressures of work and life etc, so I may have to rethink my list to include some Maneaters and possibly some Leadbelchers.

Viable option???

Thanks
So no ironblasters at all? : / Maybe not too bad - people might still assume you bring one during deployment : )

What other models do you have available?

I'd vote man eaters as they are so much more flexible (as the iron blaster is) and can deal with monsters using poison and provide a fancy flank charge but are  much more expensive. 6 ME with sniper/poison will be about 400 point with a flaming banner. It is alot in 1500 poin but their diverse uses are great.

Most armies will only have one wizard at 1500 pt so if you can snipe the character turn one, you'll be golden.

Edit. leaving the ironblasters and one mournfang at home will free up just enough points for the flaming man eaters .......... oh the coincidence ; )
Dwarf/Ogre blog (Danish)
They are definitely viable, they just don't quite fill the same role as the Iron blaster :)

If you get your base colours done most tournaments are fine with that :) it just wont be winning any awards ;) :P

In answer to your question yes they will be viable, they just don't pack the same punch. Maybe try a unit of Scouting man eaters (smaller unit) for getting rid of that artillery.

Just no time to get them painted to the standard of the rest of the army and that just wont do!
I have more Fangs, Maneaters with AHW, Butcher, Firebelly, more IGs and will have time to get some Leadies sorted....just!

Im not too bothered about being uber competitive, just so I have fun and not get tabled, I guess.

Thanks
So if you can make the man eaters pass as equipped with brace of hand guns I'd still suggest 6 of them.

But alternative a pack of 4 with scout and your preferred second ability and ahw is a mean trick too.

Splitting your fangs up into two groups of 3+ banners will be a rough setup for infantry opponents but other armies will eat them raw.

Any of the three above will give you a good tough army : )

Hey, pity about the Iron blaster.

I would drop it out and go for more MFC. It will make your opponents cry cheese etc. However if an army takes elite units etc it could cause you problems. Without an Ironblaster our only real answer to war machines etc is scouting maneaters and that's a lot of points invested.
