Q on Impact Hits and Stomp

original thread ↗

Looked around and couldn't find an answer. In the BRB or here.

1. Do you get impact hits for every model in the unit or just the front line?
2. Same for stomp?

TIA
In both cases, only models in base contact with the enemy unit.

BRB, pg 71:  "They hit a unit in base contact (if in base contact with more than one enemy unit, split the hits as evenly as possibly, randomising any 'spare' hits) if the model with Impact Hits is not in base contact with the enemy, this rule has no effect."

BRB, pg 76: "A Stomp has the Always Strikes Last special rule, and inflicts 1 automatic hit, at the model's Strength, on one enemy infantry, war beasts or swarm unit in base contact with the model."

Thanks. I don't know how I missed that.  I think it's trying to process all the changes since the last time I played was 6th edition. This is a whole new beast.
Follow up question.

If an changing ogre unit has the eg. flaming banner will their impact and stomp hits have flaming damage? (Same goes for armor piercing).

Cheers
Dwarf/Ogre blog (Danish)
Yes, the flaming banner applies the "flaming" special rule to the unit that has it equipped. Therefore any and all attacks made by that unit apply this rule. For example say for instance you had a "non-flaming" breath weapon in a unit. Sticking the banner in there would then make it flaming. Which also applies to our Stomps + Impacts :)

I cant remember the exact page and don't have my BRB to hand. If someone could please reference the page I would be grateful. Thanks

As for the armour piercing - It depends on how it is applied. For example our Lead belchers have the armour piercing rule, however it only applies to their weapon since it is the weapons special rule. Equipping a lord with "Blade of Biting" only applies armour piercing to his combat attacks because it is the weapon that holds the rule, similar to Leadies.
If you manage to give the "character" armour piercing as a rule either via spell (there is none, just an example) or via the banner or even a big name if there was one. It would then apply to all attacks, including stomps, impacts and Breath weapons if the model had one. (Firebelly in a unit of guts with the armour piercing standard)

Impact hits can benefit from special rules (like Flaming, Killing Blow, Armor Piercing).

Stomps (and Thunderstomps) never benefit - per the FAQ.  This means that your Firebelly's Stomp is not flaming (this fact has allowed my firebelly to bypass the 2+ fire ward on an enemy character on occasion).

From the BRB FAQ, pg 9: "Q: Do Stomp or Thunderstomp hits benefit from any other special
rules, equipment or magic items of the model that inflicts the hits?
(p76)
A: No."

Chris

Armor Piercing can only apply to close combat attacks, with the exception of a weapon with the armor piercing rule that is capable of shooting.  If the firebelly in your example was to use his breath weapon as a template attack in the shooting phase, it would not carry the armor piercing special rule.

I did mean to use the breath weapon as a combat attack :)
I believe in this situation is does apply? I cant look at my BrB because it had a fight with some delux paint and the paint won.

Thank you for pointing that out about stomps. I missed that in the FaQ.

Thank you Snark.

Great job with the reference and clarification.

Another question on the impact hits. I have seen the below scenario, but cannot match it with any rules/FAQs.

Unit of 14 Ironguts with 2 Tyrants, 1 Bruiser BSB, 2 Firebellies, together with a Gutlord in the front row (horde formation)... Yeah, it was a mass Death Star. Both tyrants each had a corner position.

This unit declares a charge on a unit of 40 slaves (8 ranks of 5-bus formation) The slaves hold  and the units make contact.

After magic and shooting the CC is starting and the Ogre player is placing the 2 Tyrants to the middle of the front rank. ( I thought he mentioned "make way" rule, but it could also be something else during the charge move that allowed these replacements of the Tyrants to the middle.)

And with rolling for the impact hits, he now used the basic strength of the Tyrants, since they have base2base contact. (plus the +2 on Strength with 2 ranks behind him.)

Is this correctly played?
Are impact hits resolved after make way, once in contact?
Can you switch positions during a charge move to avoid b2b contact of or with a certain model, or to be sure to have b2b contact with a model, before you are in contact with the other unit?

Any other thoughts, ideas, tricks are welcome

Make way, pg 100, can only be used to replace rank and file including champion, not other characters.

Impact hits are after make way.
Colonel has it right:  per the BRB, pg 100:  "At the start of the combat (before Impact Hits are resolved), if a character's unit is in combat, but the character is not in base contact with the enemy, the controlling player can swap his position with another model that is in base contact. You can exchange him with rank-and-file model(s), including the command group, that are in base contact with the enemy."

It's worth mentioning that you can only make way with characters who are NOT already in base contact with an enemy, to replace non-characters who ARE in base contact with an enemy.

Assuming the two Tyrants were not in b2b contact after the charge, then yes he could make way with them to be in b2b contact prior to impact hits, then use the Tyrant's basic (ie. not modified by a weapon) strength plus the rank bonus of the unit (per the Ogre Charge special rule) for the impact hit of that model.  This answers your first two questions.

Your third question is answered in the section: "Move Chargers" on pg 20 of the BRB.  In summary, that section states that when you move chargers, you must move the unit forward with only 1 wheel of up to 90 degrees allowed.  It does not allow reforming during a charge (which by definition is the movement of models within a unit - ie. repositioning characters).  Note that this also applies to overrun and pursuit moves that contact a new enemy.

One last thing:  BRB, pg 100:  "Once the unit is no longer in close combat, such characters automatically return to the front rank of their unit at the start of their following Movement phase."

So after the combat, the command moves back into the front rank, then characters fill in - but not until the start of the unit's next movement phase.

Aaaaah, that it is.

So, only 1 Tyrant could have swapped with the champion in the middle.

Tyrant-FireBe-Bruiser-champi-Firebe-Tyrant   becomes   T-F-B-T-F-C

With only the coloured in B2B contact

Thanks...

So to get it right. Characters are deployed after command groups and will rather often end up in second row, as you cannot 'make way' move your characters without being in combat?

That would mean if you get to charge then your characters will be stuck in second row as you cannot make way during your charge? meaning less attacks and weaker impact hits?

That sounds just silly! ... I hope I got it wrong some where : )

Good news!  You did make a wrong turn.

So to get it right. Characters are deployed after command groups and will rather often end up in second row, as you cannot 'make way' move your characters without being in combat?
Right so far.

That would mean if you get to charge then your characters will be stuck in second row as you cannot make way during your charge? meaning less attacks and weaker impact hits?
Charging happens in the movement phase.  Make way happens in the close combat phase, before impact hits and allows characters who are not in base contact with an enemy to trade places with a rank and file model that is in base contact with the enemy.

This made me laugh, I was picturing an ogre unit charging and a tyrant huffing and puffing and trying to catch up to the ogre champion infront of him,   once there he taps the champion on the shoulder and points behind him to which the ogre responds "aww man no fair"
Reading and laughing my ... off.....LOL

Good thing they always tend to make it and catch up in time to tap off on the shoulder....hahaha
