New player putting together a 1000 point starter army

original thread ↗

I have never played any of the Warhammer games but am now starting up an ogre army. My models aren't ready yet but I want to go ahead and get a list going on. I thought I'd start at 1000 just so I can get up and running sooner.

Here are the models I have:

Battalion Box with
6 Bulls
6 Ironguts
4 Leadbelchers

plus

1 Slaughtermaster/Butcher
1 Yet to be converted BSB Bruiser

I know I could use my extra bits to mix up the number of Bull/Ironguts/Leadbelchers I have, but I think I'd like to start with 6/6/4 just for the fun of variety on the table.
I'd mostly like advice on how I'd equip my Butcher and if I could/should also be taking a Bruiser. I haven't gotten my core rule book yet so I haven't learned the game's allowances for each unit type.

Thanks much.
For 1k games your list looks fine with the 6/6/4

For diversity a box of mournfangs or an ironblaster will go a long way and then you can field 1000 pt easily AND change details from game to game.

Properly you will in the early start of your army spent more points on upgrades to reach 1000 pt and get diversity.

The butcher will be your guy for many games to come but for starters you can use him as a bruiser if you want to avoid the magic phase in your early games (the rules can be a little intense before you get the game mechanism).

Equipment on the bruiser would be a second magic level, perhaps a great weapon and a ward save (use items from the main rulebook) that would be about your allowance in a 1000 pt game.

Welcome and enjoy!

Hey welcome! Joakim is right :)

I would personally opt for the Iron Blaster. Less points and it lets you play around with a few more rules (artillery).
As for your Butcher load out I would use - Level 2, Dispel Scroll. Running with the "maw lore" (our book one) he will regenerate wounds on every cast :)
Your bruiser can run around naked, he will still kill things lol. Also your 6/6/4 set up is a very good start :) its where I started a few months ago :) Also remember you have gnoblars in the battalion box. 15 I think :) all you need to do is but some bases :) 20x20mm.

As for remembering spells, rules etc. I learned something when I started playing.
Tear off a piece of paper and sit it behind the unit with a reminder on - rules, spells, and special abilities. No one will tell you no because it does not influence the game in any way. It is also a good habit to get into if you proxy units so your opponent know exactly what it is. sometimes its hard for them to remember all their rules and your entire army list too lol.

Thanks for the tips. It feels like I've got a pretty good starting point now. I may also be adding some Sabretusks into my first 1000. I just placed the order at my local shop.
