Bull test model complete

original thread ↗

Hi, all. I'm jumping into Warhammer and have chosen Ogres as my first army. I decided to do a test model from ebay before I got started on my battalion box and just thought I'd share.

I easily could have put more work into this but it is for the table after all and I don't want to spend 100 hours painting details that will never be seen or be afraid to touch the model. Having said that I do see a thing or two I can improve on, but I'm pretty happy with the results.

Sorry, but my phone is all I have for photo taking.
For a tabletop standard model that's great work. I like the nice, clean paintwork and the strong colour blocks.

You've also left plenty of room for yourself to revisit and add tattoos or other freehand work if you want.

If I were to change anything, I'd get a wash or two over the metals to move them a bit away from 'silver over black'.

That said, still a great job.
Good solid start and as written already room for tattoos should you want them.

I personally like more dirt/grime on my models/bases but this is still sweet. :)
My hood is my castle...
Tattoos/warpaint are on the table but I have no idea what I'd want to go with at this point. I have plenty of time yet to decide.
As for weathering, I thought some might bring up his uncharacteristic cleanliness but I looked at it from a table top perspective. I figured the way they'll usually be viewed, less is more. I wanted to try some of the killer rust and weathering effects I've seen but decided it may kind of blend or "muddy up" the model while looking at them from that distance. For metal, I just stuck with a base coat, double wash, dry brush around edges, and highlight spikes/bolts, etc.
Love it. Very clean (what I attempt myself but to perhaps not so high a standard!) would love to know how you got the skin that way, basecoat layers etc.

The skin turned out to be easy and was a redo after I realized I was wasting time using too many layer ups.

Paints other than the Citadel shade are Vallejo Game Colors. I used P3 white primer.

1. Airbrush base coat with Heavy Skintone. I use thin coats so it took a few go overs to get the nice solid color.
2. Wash with Reikland Flesh Shade. Next time I'm going to put a little more in the deepest crevices after the first application has dried.
3. Layer on a 2:1 mix of Heavy Skintone/Bonewhite.
4. Layer on a 1:1 mix of Heavy Skintone/Bonewhite. This step may take a second coat but mostly on the highest and broadest areas.
5. Pick out a few detail areas like the face or chest wrinkles with about a 4:1 or 5:1 mix of HS/BW. I haven't decided for sure on that mix but it may be too close to matter.

That's the skin. What I think I'll try to do different next time is make some shoulder separation by leaving more of the 2:1 mix showing beneath the 1:1 mix.
