Hi fellow guts!

I am not familiar to shoot with a cannon and I need some help.
Since ironblaster shoot "2d10" and use the highest roll, how far do you measure when you shoot at a unit? I guess 6-8 inches? Share your experience :)
Well, from what I've seen via Youtube videos and from personal experience, I've found that one of the most ideal targeting spot for your initial shot (before bounces etc.) is 10" from the back-end of your target.

Here's the reason I've seen for it. You have 6 results (obviously) for every roll.
Misfire: sucks :( lol
2: need 8" more (at the most; many times you'll be shooting at a larger target, so you may not even need as large of a roll!)
4: need 6" more
6: need 4" more
8 or 10: generally you've hit your target spot on.

So, you basically have a rough 33% to hit dead-on (depending upon target, of course), 50% to bounce and make it, and only a 17% fail (ie misfire). Now, I'm not going to go into the details of the following bounce, because with our Ironblasters we have a special rule that we get to bounce rolls and discard the lower; thus, our odds on hitting on the bounce are much higher than that of other cannons. Without that reroll, if you roll a 2, you basically have a 33% of hitting on the bounce , a roll of a 4 makes it 50%, and a roll of a 6 makes it 67%. Include the bounce reroll, and all those stats just got better (by how much, idk, didn't take stats lol).

Now, assuming that you only put it 8" from the back of your target, you've made the odds worse by making it 33% fail (misfire or 10) and a rough 33% to either hit dead on or 33% to bounce. If you put it 10" back, you've minimized the amount of chance for failure. OF COURSE, don't forget that anything can fail in this game, so there's no sure-fire answer; this just hopefully takes the edge off the failing part :P

Just remember, Mathhammer does not equal Warhammer, it only helps us to understand Warhammer ;)

New book WLD: 21/11/3 - Got trounced by one of the "Khaine" elf armies... Stupid new rules...

Its only the second bounce that rolls 2D6, the first one is as normal for a cannon.

Pick a spot, 10" from the chosen target is ideal for Ironblasters, then roll the Artillery dice. If its a misfire roll on the misfire chart, if its a number move the point of impact that many inches along the chosen line.

Then you roll for the bounce. 2 Artillery dice pick the highest, a misfire counts as a zero. If both are a misfire the cannonball only hits the initial point and anything over it. If it bounces its whatever is under the line.. One model max per rank.

The reason you go 10" back is because the Ironblaster is more likely to overshoot if you use the standard 8-6" that is ideal for a normal cannon.

How can the ironblaster be more likely to overshoot if it's the second dice that gets an extra roll?  Aiming 10" back eliminates the chance of overshooting altogether, which we can afford to do with a longer average cannonball bounce.

I've always aimed for 8" from the rear of my target and have literally never missed hitting something in the unit I was aiming for. Obviously odds are at some point I will because I have as much chance of rolling a 10 as a 2 but so far the law of averages is doing me proud.

I try to move my ironblaster such that I can shoot through multiple targets, like two chariots, or a character in a unit and a warmachine beside the unit.. 8" from the back of the first target makes it likely I will hit the first, and with choice of 2 dice for the bounce it is likely I can hit both. With a moving cannon you are wasting shots if you aren't thinking about how to hit multiple targets.
