Characterful-ness

Howdy everybody.

So when it comes to doing an army one of the main things I look for is character in the army. Now I'm aware everyone loves to convert their own tyrants / butchers, give them a little bit of background, which is awesome indeed, something I really love, but where do you find inspiration for stuff related to Ogres?

For armies like dwarfs, empire, elves its quite easy, they have so much fluff, books/novels filled with different characters and lands and ideas.
Is there something ( non-army book) like this for Ogres that people can work off or go to for inspiration? Or is that why people make their own ideas and stories about their armies because there isn't alot to work with? (Which I suppose adds greatly to the imagination of the person as they are working from scratch to bring together their own characters).

I think the best place to go for inspiration is outside GW, sci fi/ fantasy novels, video games, and the good thing about ogres is you can pretty much do anything with them and get away with it.  My favourite source is probably warcraft lore, its similiar to warhammer but still has a few major differences that you can really work with.

If you look in the 300th edition of White Dwarf (when Ogres came out!), some WFRP 2nd edition books (old world bestiary), and online should yield some info. Really though, one of the greatest things about Ogres is that, because they aren't too keen on writing stuff down (save cave drawings) you can really make your own backgrounds, tribes, kingdoms, strongholds (hehehe), etc etc; the possibilities are endless.

Remember, Ogres are nomads...they don't just live in the Mountains of Mourn. There could be tribes in The Empire, or even as far as Lustria. Just something to think about if you're going the 'make my own background' route.

I made mine on the basis that my Ogres hijacked some ships and sailed off to Lustria in the hopes of "Good grub!" Thus, the Snake-Eater tribe, whose skin tones have been utterly changed by the wide variety of poisons, toxins, and whatnot from the animals in Lustria.

I took my inspiration from Maneaters, and how Ogres absorb cultures. Since ogres are so big and few in number (Don't have 120-odd rank and file infantry) I really wanted everyone to be converted. It's allowed me a lot of fun and freedom.

I have an old Dogs of War book, as well as some other bits of Dogs info, so a lot applies to Ogres too. The whole wanderlust aspect of Ogres is something I've always liked - they've even been to Ulthuan!

Now, if only Golgfag was any good...
