rhinox riders - useable??

original thread ↗

Hi Members,
I was looking in the latest OK Codex and didn't see a listing for Grimhorn Rhinox Riders. Yet when I run my Army Builder 3 software (current) I see Rhinox Riders listed. Then going to the Forgeworld site, I see OK Rhinox Riders.

So, are Rhinox Riders allowed? If so, then must a player use the Forgeworld Models or could he make his own? And what documentation must a player bring to a tourney to justify their use?

Thanks Sandy
I believe that forge world updated the rules for them.  So yes you can use them as to weather you can proxy models that depends on your opponent and/or tournament organizer.  But I am sure you can convert or build  your own if you like there shouldn't any reason why you can't.  As for documentation you should be able to print of the PDF file from forgeworld for all the rules etc.

Here's the link for you:-

Hope this helps.  :D

This has been a question the Warhammer community's been asking itself for ages and there hasn't yet been a definitive answer. Some people are absolutely fine to play against Warhammer Forge/Forge World units, others don't like the feeling of having them 'sprung' on them. The Grimhorns are pretty powerful, so the best way to avoid any upset is to let your opponent know you're using them straight off the bat and present them with the rules so they know what they're up against. It might also be worth making multiple lists with and without them so that you're prepared if someone takes real issue with you using them.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.
Well Ogres are quite a strong army, and Mournfangs are really good MC.
Ogre Rhinox Cavalry are not needed in the army, and they are pretty damn broke.
You're looking at a T5, 4W model with a 1+ Save and a Parry (if Ironfist) with 9 S5 attacks (4 of which are at WS4, 1 less attack if frenzy is lost on Rhinox), S5 stomp and D3+1 Impact hits on a stubborn Ld 8 model.

Since unit size is 1+ and they're special, you could have 3 solo units that can basically tie up and grind a unit each, and should you fluff your attacks it's still stubborn.

You won't see them allowed anywhere apart from your own occational casual game (pretty sure most opponents would tire of them quickly if used often). Which is unfortunate, cause they're awesome models. Just use them as MFs instead... :\
They're not broken, not like some other stuff thats in other army books.

You are looking at 100+ points per dude, he better be tossing out that many attacks for that price tag.

Well, they are better than bruisers so, maybe a bit OP.
Tested them against a friend once, sat back with the rest of my army while 4 of them cleaned his off of the table, with just a bit of magic support and luck.
They are broken in the sense that they are greatly undercosted.

As an example:

1x Grimhorn Rhinox Rider (Standard Bearer, Gleaming Pennant, HA, IF) costs 130 pts.

He gets MV 7 w/ swiftstride, D3+1 Str 5 Impact hits, 9x Str 5 attacks, Str 5 stomp, T5, 4 wounds, 1+/6++ saves, Cause Fear, Stubborn, and can reroll first failed LD test.

That blows away any chariot out there - which would be the closest comparison.  If they were allowed at tournaments in my region, I would always run three units of one (with Gleaming Pennant, Wailing Banner, and Swiftness).

Holy cow!!!!  That is OP, hands down!!!!  I just read the rules.  It wouldn't even be fun to play that.  If all you want to do is win then go for it, but if you have any interest in a fair and fun game, leave these guys at home.
The enemy of my enemy is my double enemy.

It's not about the number of attacks. It's the complete package. And it's an IMPRESSIVE package. ;)
I like small units with 2 MFs. I'd trade them in for one of these guys in a heartbeat, while spending less points at the same time. 8)
You'd spend about the same number of points. 2 properly kitted Mournfang are 140 pts. Almost exactly the same as a kitted out RR.

What changes?

The RR gains +1WS, Str, and A for the Rider. The mount gains an attack. The whole package gains a toughness and a point of armor.

What do they lose? They go from 2 D3 impact hits to D3+1. And it has half as many wounds.

A fair tradeoff when you realize its not that hard to put wounds through 1+ armor.

Don't compare them to Chariots, all chariots except for Iblasters and Skullcannons are way overpriced and have been for years. Think of RR as what Chariots should be like.

Yes, they are undercosted, but not nearly as much as you may think.

What changes?
Stubborn, Ld8, Frenzy (ItP)

Those are issues for small MF units on the flank:
Losing combat buy a couple of points if getting charged and fluffing attacks
Fleeing due to panic

Though frenzy is something that can be exploited, no doubt.

Given the option - I'd always field 2 or 3 if it was a serious game. 8)
