Hunter query

original thread ↗

Hi was going to pop a hunter into my 2400pts tourney list. My main questions are

1 In the equipment list for the big guy he has a Great Throwing Spear and he can take the Blood Vulture upgrade,so does he have 2 ranged attacks in the shooting phase if he takes the upgrade?

2 Both are Quick to Fire so if he can indeed take both does that mean he can stand and shoot with both of them as well?

3 Should i put him in with a unit of sabretusks,if so how many?

4 Is he still on a 50mm base?

Cheers alex
1. Maybe? Pg 38 of the BRB says a model armed with a missile weapon can use it to make one shooting attack. So, one shooting attack per missile weapon?

2. Yes

3.Preference? I hear that a pack of 10 with him is kinda scary though....

4. Yes
They call me MR. Cthulhu! AAAAAHHHHHHH!
1. Pick one missile weapon, cannot fire both.

2. As above - pick one for SnS.

Enjoy!

Joakim is correct. The situation is explicitly covered in section "weapons". Not having my rule book on me, but I believe it is around p93. (I looked it up myself recently).

As for sabretusks: A single sabretusk is 21 points and gives vanguard and swiftstride, 2 ablative wounds for shooting, and 1-3 attacks depending whether you field it on the side or in the second rank. I cannot find a reason NOT to field him with at least one sabre.
...basically,
   RUN
If you want to field a hunter and he is not cruising on a Stonehorn, then run him with 2 sabres on each side.  that unit has a ton of attacks and it's all at above average WS and I.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

Not to wander off topic, but why only two? If you bother taking a hunter on foot, why not get a few more sabres?
I have not considered what the optimal number could be, but two on each side would increase the impact on the charge, but maybe get too wide for flank-charges and hunting specific units.

Well 2 on each side is 4 sabres.  The idea is running them into an enemy that is I3 so you can strike first.  A second rank of sabres will give more wounds to the unit, and make it a lasting combat unit true, but then that unit starts to get pretty expensive.

Running the Hunter with only 4 sabres means there are much more special points left for maneaters, yhettees or leadbelchers.

I *ALWAYS* play kitties as single drops. However, if I have a hunter, I will deploy him with one of my kitty units if I can make use of the vanguard move. Then after the kitty escorts the hunter on the vanguard, they almost always part ways. The reasons for wanting the vanguard:

1) There's a watchtower I want to hold before the enemy gets to it.
2) It brings me to within 18" of a monster and I have the harpoon launcher.
3) I want to use the kitty/hunter as a redirector on turn 1 to prevent a turn 1 charge by the opponent.
4) I want to engage a warmachine ASAP.

Reasons I don't like the idea of a hunter with a large pack of kitties (despite the fact it looks/sounds really cool):
1) I don't like having large/expensive units that don't get the BSB reroll.
2) No Command. How awesome would that be to have a kitty command!
3) Kitties are not monstrous so they only have 1 supporting attack.
4) Kitties get slowed down.
If going big and fluffy, max kitties I would take with hunter is 6, with him on one side, not in center. He only needs to clip to get all his attacks and him plus 6 can maximize on units at least 125mm wide.

You would be better served by 5 scouting swiftstride maneaters with extra hand weapons for about the same points.. so if you just need to take a hunter, take him with 1 kitty, dragon helm and stubborn crown, and aim for a flaming unit.
