Hey all :)

I was wondering if anyone has any knowledge of Fantasy Flight Games' X Wing game? :) Do the rules play well? My friends have bought the box, and a few expansion packs, and I was wondering whether it would be worth getting involved?  I have put a quick list together on Battlescribe and it seems like it could be good fun :)

I've no idea about the game, but I can tell you that in the US it's the second best-selling game amongst independents, ahead of Warmahordes and Fantasy.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.

Assuming 40k is number 1? :)

It seems really quite good, but I dunno whether I can put down the money for it without getting a little gamer insight into it? :)

I've been seeing this popping up alot too!
What I want to know is, do you make your own force out of whatever you want? Or do you have to use certain lists and combinations of ships?

I,e, design your own force or pre-prepared forces+missions?

From what I gather, it is a lot like Warhammer, in that the missions come in the rulebook (although you could design your own), and then agree a points limit, and build your own force within those confines :) The rulebook can be found for free and legally with a quick Google search :) FF Games don't seem to to have restricted people in the same manner GW do...

I played a couple demo games two weeks ago and it is great fun. Game play is fairly simple compared to fantasy but there is plenty of strategy. It's a bit like free form chess,  there are a limited selection of moves each ship can make and you want to think a few steps ahead, but then you also roll dice and use special abilities and have to react to your opponents moves and deal with terrain so it's a lot more like a skirmish game in that regard.

Obviously I'm not too knowledgeable about building fleets, but I know there are a bunch of pilot cards included with each ship. So when you buy a ship it will include cards for all the different pilots and upgrades that ship can use. You can play preconfigured fleets or take a swarm of fighters or only a couple heavy hitters. There's a lot of variations possible.
