Trying the SM

original thread ↗

I have been playing with a Tyrant for a while and want to try out a 2400 point SM list.  I like the Tyrant but just want to get some games in with the SM for comparison sake.  Here is what I put together, feedback and comments are greatly appreciated.

378 - SM Level 4 with Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales, Talisman of Endurance, IF, Lore of Beasts
188 - Butcher Level 2 with Hellheart, IF Lore of Great Maw
179 - Firebelly Level 1 with Dispel Scroll, Ruby Ring of Ruin, GW
183 - BSB with Crown of Command, Dragonhelm, HA, IF
350 - Mournfangx4 Mus, SB with Dragonhide Banner, HA, IF
318 - Ogresx9 FC
389 - Irongutsx8 FC with Standard of Discipline (all characters in here)
340 - Ironblaster x2
42 - Sabertusks x2
Total: 2367

So I still have 33 points left over to play with. Can add a 10th Ogre or another Sabertusk.

Your SM can't have Fencer's Blade and Ironfist since you have 2 hand weapons with Fencer's. Otherwise the list looks pretty standard and hard hitting.
Armies played: Ogre Kingdoms and Lizardmen

I would say just drop the Iron Fist. With your build its not needed. Other than that yep, your standard ogre army. :D However ide watch out with all your eggs in 1 basket yea you got a nice unit, but it will be picked on and harassed by everything and anything your opponent has. You wont lose your General easy, but your other characters are ripe for the slaughter.
When maw gives you lemons, APPEASE HIM!

Latest win/s - Tomb Kings
Looks pretty solid. All though I dont like the idea of having that many points tied up in characters. I would drop the belly or the butcher, and use the points on a unit of leadbelchers.

Ive ran a very similar list but at 2000pts.
I would keep it as is, the Firebelly can add some really easy combat res to any fight. The butcher is your Maw tax but I would take heavens on your SM over beasts any day. Beasts has its uses and you are character heavy but heavens would do you a lot more favours.
As for your SM set up its all preference, I find that he is tough as nails and instead run mine with Gruts Sickle for a whopping +6 to cast!
I find the spells in heavens benefit the ogres more, Beasts is more directed towards heroes and individual characters.
Where as heavens you can pop blizzard and give them a -1 to hit you, always good! and make them re-roll all 6's! etc...
Just my 2 cents :) other than that it looks solid.

It is official, I hate the Slaughtermaster (dimensional cascaded himself in turn 3) :D :D

Seriously though.  I have been playing OK for a few months now and although the consensus seems to favor an SM list, I much prefer the Tyrant.  Between rolling for Winds of Magic, casting values, and Miscasts, there is just too much uncertainty for my play style.  Now I just need to finalize my Tyrant build.

Thanks to those who replied for the help...cheers mates :)

Why not just try both a Tyrant and a SM? In my 2400pts list I have a kitted out Tyrant and a bare-bones SM. Having +4/+4 to cast/dispel is amazing over level 2's and the extra spells from Lores like Heavens, Death, Beasts or even Maw are really nice as well.

I have yet to try a Tyrant and Dual Lv2's and I think it has potential but I think that there's also something to be said about a Tyrant and SM in the same list.

Personally I would never run a Tyrant and a SM... Too many points sunk into one area of the army list.
I love my tyrant, same as you :) I hate relying on winds to make a good turn. However with great success I have ran a heavens butcher, the low casting costs means I throw less dice at a particular spell being level 6 and all therefore not miscasting as often :)

But IMO the tyrant is a more sound option although harder to use.
Some match ups will favour the SM Ie Tomb kings etc. Because it can give you a strong magic phase having him cast at Level 6/7. Where as the tyrant is good against armies who will bring lots of hoards or combat units that he can rank up lots of easy CR against :) Also the Dual fire bellys in the list help :)

A bit of a late input.

Losing the SM due to miscast is something that happens for ogres. Most of the spells you'd like to cast need 3-4-5 for a reliable results... reliable to roll 6's that is ; ) But it does happen yet normal miscasts getting a wounds is not too bad since you got W5 and can with the maw lore get them back, just dont lose spells - consider using the BRB item can lets you reroll miscast results.
For the same reason I max use two casters pr army as I wont have enough dices for more than 2-4 attempts max.

The dual tyrant/sm in 2400 pt is really character heavy and I have only found it to work in a beast list with all characters in one unit for maximal carnage. Max the tyrant with glittering scale, fencers, the +1S big name and go light on the SM items.

In other SM-lists I would leave out the tyrant as he kills too little compared to normal units (iron guts, mournfangs).

Better luck next time with the SM - miscasts are overall still rare : )
