Firebelly

original thread ↗

Hi!

I am just about finished painting my Firebelly and just have the flames left to do. I was wondering if anyone in the community who has already painted one has any advice on how to do it well or what paints to use etc?

I have a few yellows/oranges etc and am aware that the hottest part of the flame is the 'inside'.

Thank you for any help!

For mine I first looked up some photos of firebreathing to find what realistic flames looked like as I didn't like the GW flames that much.

I worked mine from a dark red base, through red, orange, yellow and white. I ended up doing and redoing some of the colours to get a feel I liked. I was able to use a combination of dry brushing and and painting specific parts to get the final look.

For inspiration (and cause i like showing this guy off):

My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
For my flames I just based them using Ceramite White.  Then I applied the following shades:
Casandora Yellow
Fuegan Orange
Carroburg Crimson (just in the deep recesses for the dark reds)
Really easy and I think the end result came out pretty nice looking.

My advice for painting flame is that it's like painting something that's a progression of highlights in white/yellow/orange/black colour, but the highlights go the other way to normal. You start with the lightest colour in the recesses and end up highlighting with progressively darker colours up to a black layer on the outside of the smoke.
All these flames above look amazing... but they are wrong.
The fire is at its hottest where the combustion is happening ie the centre.
I based mine ceramite white, covered with sunburst yellow (completely) dry brushed/ highlighted up through Blood red - Red Gore - Scab Red - Mechrite Red, Filled in certain parts near the centre (using intuition) with ceramite white again to give it a really HOT look.
Then for the smoke I done a mix of Rakarth flesh + black gives a nice pale smokey look, then mixed that all the way through to black for the clouds. I do apologise for not having photos :(
But essentially I just highlighted in the "wrong direction" from light to dark as it should be.

for some inspiration :)

Being a breath attack, I would think the actual combustion is happening magically somewhere inside his body.  So the fire would cool as it exited with the hottest parts being right at his mouth.  My interpretation anyways. Kinda like a flamethrower:

Thank you very much for your advice! I have basecoated it Ceramite White so far and will start with the reverse highlighting soon!

Just put the finishing touches to my attempt. Am fairly happy with it, but after spending an age on it I think this will do!

What do you think?

Very nice, the fire turned out great.
Looks awesome!
Heres a gnoblar for being one of the few ogre players out there with "realistic" flames! :)
All I would add is some more OSL, although I usually go a bit overboard with it...

Thanks for the comments! The more I look at it, the more I like the flames now!

@mcsheehy I know what you mean! Just a few searches for flamethrower images was really useful! I have added a bit more OSL since taking the pic!
