Magic missile from 2nd rank

Hey everyone, quick question: can you use a magic missile from the 2nd rank of a unit?

For example: I had a butcher on the 2nd rank of a unit composed of 7 ogres (full command on the front rank) and used the magic missile (spell #1 of the Maw Lore). My friend said I couldn't because I didn't have a line of sight. But I argued that a magic missile was used a conventional shooting weapon (as explained on p.31 of the BRB), and since you can shoot on 2 ranks, I could use a magic missile from the 2nd rank.

Was I wrong?

Yes, magic uses the line of sight rules for shooting.

Sorry, but I am unclear on the answer to this. Is the "yes" to him being wrong, or is it to the original question of being able to cast Magic Missiles from the second rank? I am probably being a bit slow on this one, but it is something that I am unsure on too, as it has come up in a couple of battles recently... :)
