Finished Plaguebearers.

original thread ↗

Hey all :)

Just finished these two, in under ten minutes from start to finish. I had been looking for a decent speed painting method for ages, and am very happy with how these turned out :) Forgive the bad phone photos...

More pics in my gnoblog :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
For ten minutes that is quite nice.

I would recommend eye and weapon detail.
My hood is my castle...
Thanks very much for the kind words! I completely agree on the eye... I wasn't originally gonna bother, as they're rank and file, but looking at them, they definitely need it :)

The weapons, I have gone for a shiny obsidian finish, but the photo doesn't really communicate this very well... :(

Blackish shade on phones suck (I should know...)!

The cool part with eyes on Daemons is that you seldom need to paint the pupil.

Will this be a mono army or just models you paint?
My hood is my castle...
It is such a shame, because (as silly as it sounds) I put a lot of effort into the black being a perfectly even coat, and then getting the gloss finish...

These guys are just two of 80 Plaguebearers who will be in my 12000pt Daemons army :) Multi-God army, with a slight preference towards Nurgle :)

Astounding job especially in such a small space of time. Quite the look I always think of when regarding nurgle. I dislike the generic green.

Care to share how you painted them thus? :)
I would also like to know the recapie for this as I am just about to start painting quite a few of these disgusting fellows and i'm nit sure where to start.

Thanks for the compliments! I have never particularly liked the generic green, as I don't find it particularly representative of plague and disease.

I am more than happy to share how I painted them :) I don't have the colour names to hand, but I will work with the names of the new range...

I started off by solidly undercoating the models in white. I tried doing this with a brush at first, but actually found that a can of white undercoat gave a thinner and more solid coat.

Once these had dried, I then applied a liberal wash of Reikland Fleshshade (Ogryn Flesh).

Then, I applied Biel-Tan Green (Thraka Green) wash, but only is certain areas, and only 5 or 6 patches on the whole model, giving the skin a mottled appearance. Really try not to go overboard with this, and each patch should be really quite weak. Water the Shade down if needed.

Next, I used Seraphim Sepia (Gryphonne Sepia), and just gave a mdeium wash to the model, focussing on the grooves and recesses, but leaving the majority of the model untouched.

Now, the sores, open wounds and entrails were the fun part. I would highly recommend buying some Tamiya Clear Red, as it is truly a God send for gore and gruesomeness. I carefully, but liberally applied this to all sores and wounds. With one coat it looks like it is a little bloody and sore, but if you apply a second, it looks wet, bloody and gruesome. The key to this stuff, is waiting until each coat is dry, as it is tacky and viscous, and can really make a mess of models if you are impatient.

Lastly, I painted the sword jet black. Try to get a thin, but solid coat, so that the sword keeps it's edges and detail, but is a consistent colour all over. Shades and highlights aren't necessary, as I then applied a gloss varnish to the sword, to give it the Obsidian finish I was looking for.

Base as appropriate :)

I would definitely say, that the two key points are to undercoat in white, and to stay away from heavily pigmented paints (hence the sole use of Washes/Shades). This way, you can achieve a disease-ridden, washed out skin tone, all in 5 minutes per model.

I can try and get a step-by-step with pictures together if you need anymore detail? :)

Also, I cannot recommend the Tamiya Clear range highly enough. Particularly the Red. They are readily available online, but can be bought in Hobbycraft (for a damn sight cheaper) for those of you in the UK :)

Like the glossy gore
Josh?
Need moar!!!

What else have you done? :)
Check my gnoblog for my most recent work, although there has been a delay of two weeks on any fresh painting, as I got sucked into building an Ironblaster and 4 Mournfangs :)

I've been painting up a Great Unclean One, however the colour scheme is drastically different to these guys (I started painting it, predating these guys) and kinda hate it, but am unsure as how best to strip the paint off as it is a resin model...

Feel free to take a look at my blog though :) And, I promise new pics soon! :)

Will do, didn't realise you had a Gnoblog, thought it was being shown here, whoops! :)

Sorry I can't help with ideas on stripping resin :| Sounds tedious.
No worries :) I have nothing against people commenting here; its great to hear compliments. There's just a better insight into my work on the blog :)

I have a few ideas on stripping resin; just need to test it before diving head first into a model as valuable as the Great Unclean One :)

Josh, if Tamiya red is not available what would you suggest or do in its place? :)
Also, whats the key to applying the green? I tried it, perhaps mine wasn't watered enough but the green came out rather dark and easily noticeable ( albeit im using the darker green shade as couldnt get any thraka, is this likely the problem ? )

Thanks.

Any of the old GW inks red and brown would work, although these are probably even harder to come by!
TLK
May I add. To anyone who is thinking about following Just_Josh's painting scheme. I have been trying it, and I can not stress enough how important the green wash stage is. Make sure its super watery and just touch it on, took me a few trial and error runs to realise that just a little bit to much green will make it TOO green and very very noticeable as opposed to the subtle green diseasey inclinations as seen by joshs :)
I would also suggest looking at a range of inks by a company called Windsor and Newton. Their chestnut and red inks would mix well, and dry with a gloss finish, but may require a couple of coats to get the right finish :)

Whilst I feel the green is integral to the paint scheme, too much can spoil it :) Glad you've found the right mix Biadectic!

I'm glad you posted this thread haha Thanks buddy! :P
I did take the "liberal" fleshshade wash too seriously though and my guys came out a little darker than I would have liked haha

Do you think this approach would work on bigger models? Or would the surface area be too much to allow a proper good wash job?
I think the liberal fleshshade can be taken to a fair extreme, but it then needs less of the other colours, to avoid the overall darker tone you'd get from the initial overload of fleshshade :)

I think this would work perfectly well on larger models, but would require perhaps several coats of each layer, as opposed to the single repetition in this tutorial. I plan on trying it on a Great Unclean One soon enough, so I will be able to say definitively :)
