New and in need of advice

original thread ↗

Hello Folks,

I am hoping some of you who enjoy fantasy in general and commenting on armylists can aid me.

I am a 40K player and am looking into fantasy. I will choose between OK and WoC.

WoC had loads of options and combination  in models and magic and a few models I would just love to piant.
Yesterday I got an offer to get my hands on some OK instead.
I read into the army and am impressed by the fun Ok can bring to the battlefield.
I dread painting flesh, but there is a challange in that aswell. The more I look into OK the more I like them.
Alas I have to wait till tomorrow when the store is open to get my hands on the new army book.

So why should I go for OK in your opinions?

Also I read new player in fantasy should avoid using sabretusks to better learn the flow of battles. Any truth in that? 2 do look like a good investment.

Ok so the offer.... for the price of a thundertusk I am offered:

8 leadbelchers
6 Ogres
5 ironguts
bag o' knoblers (40ish)
thundertusk

Is that a good start to aim for a 2k list.
And from there what are my expension opties...

As a hero, I think a slaugther master would be great for magic and combat powers

also I read a lot about a BSB.... is this the tyrant kit?

As I read, those ironblasters thingies are a must have. But the rare slot will be taken by the thundertusk/stonehorn I am afraid... or perhaps 1 cannon will do if it fits a 2k list.

With what I have, is it pointwise possible to field 4 MVC as special next to 8 leadbelchers?, I love the models and how good would just 2 be?!

As a core how viable is 6 ogres and 5 ironguts. Perhaps even 2x 10 gnoblar trappers to go along.

Thanks in advance!
TAKE THE DEAL! :)

Ok sorry... Hi i'm chris, I'm relatively new to fantasy myself. Only played 6 games! and like you I switched from 40k (space wolves/Chaos)
The rules are very different but in a good way. I feel like 40k was aimed more at children where fantasy is the big boys game :) there is SO much more tactics with re-directors etc. Also answering your question Sabretusks are a must, they can be the difference between winning and losing (so I found) :)
They are difficult to use and it will take you atleast 6+ games to pick up on the rules (again as I found) :)
Just explain to your LGS that your new and need a run through the rules and they will be more than happy to help out a new start :) give you tips/advice etc.

As for your army choice :) I played ogres because my gf said I eat like one... so whats your reason? :P
OK as an army choice... well there aren't many OK players in my area so its a fairly unique army :) which my friends hate :) Ironblasters are the best artillery in the game. period. :)
WoC look awesome and I might collect them next, but ogres are a good laugh. Throw down a gut star and watch it destroy an army by its self lol :)
OK have very few units that cannot be competitive. Yhettees and our special characters spring to mind, but that's about it. Even gorgers have their place In high point games.
Don't dread painting flesh it cant be so simple on ogres! you have very few models (I have 27 models in 2k) :)
As for flesh, its a big canvas and I used white undercoat (grey works best!) cadian flesh tone and reikland flesh shade then just highlights. It doesn't take long and looks awesome. As for butchers I used Ushabti bone base, ungor flesh, reikland flesh shade and highlights. makes them look a little unwell :)
keeps it simple, although it can get boring (but 27 models)... come on lol

Ok as for your list...

Thundertusk - personaly I don't like them, but the other OK player in my area smashes my face with one every game lol. When I use mine it flops. So im assuming its just me :) I run 1 Iron blaster instead and put more points into special for MFC + Leadies.
in 2500 I WILL run mine :) that ASL bubble can be soooo good ! :)
leadies - YES, YES, YES! :) Love mine I ALWAYS have some :)
ogres and guts - This is a mixed bag. I prefer to run one large unit of ironguts (12 strong at 2k) and buff them with MAW magic + Heavens (this doesn't mean much to you yet? ;) maw for the 4+ "invulnerable" save (regen - Trollguts) across the entire horde! including the characters you put in it! :) makes it a steamroller :) you can also buff str + toughness, as you know Str works differently in fantasy, no double strength instant kill, it lowers armour saves! by 1 for every point of str past 3. So your S6 Ironguts with +1S buff makes a 2+ armour go to 6+!
Gnoblars - Love the little guys, they are only good for dying but as youl learn, they can direct charges away from your core and also block charges! meaning instead of fighting 3 units at once you can fight 1 if you position them! :)

The heros I have success with is Slaughter master,Butcher (for my other magic lore) and BSB.
As for your BSB question, yes most people use a bruiser. But I use the female maneater with some small conversion as a kind of standing joke with a friend! :)
BSB lets you re-roll failed leadership :)
I wouldn't field 4 MFC at 2k. I field 3 and its overkill! 2 is more than sufficient and Id run 6-8 leadies :) depending on points.
OK are one of those armies where their core is very good for its price! like Space woves are! :)
Yes that would be a solid core running it as MMU (Multiple medium Units)
Butcher in those 5 guts and SM + BSB in those bulls! :)
As for expansion Id recommend an Ironblaster or TWO!
more guts (personal preference) try proxy a gutstar also and see which army works best for you at 2k. I know i preferred a gutstar but its all down to how you play :)

Remember when your making your list
Lords (25%)
Heroes (25%)
Core (atleast 25%)
Special (50%)
Rare (25%)
that is how you split the points for making an army list.
so for example you CAN spend 500pts on lords + heroes. But then you MUST spend 500pts on core :)
and the rest can be distributed between rare + special. Its essentially the same as the FOC chart for 40k except you are points limited not slot limited.

Best thing to do is watch a game and ask questions :)
That's how I decided I wanted to play fantasy :)
If you've got any questions just post them up on the forum and we'l be happy to help! :)

Hope I answered Some questions and didn't confuse you too much :P

Hey there!

I think you should be able to pull off some good lists with that package.

The SM and BSB is mandatory for OK. The BSB is to the best of my knowledge not in any kit. (I currently just use the standard bearer from the ogre bull package with the look out gnoblar - boring but cheap and easy).

I would get some more Ironguts to supplement your list. They are core (which should be 25% of your total points) and they are game-wise good! (but $$$ expensive).

The cannon can wait - its nice to have but the alternative is a bit weaker and very offensive playing style (I do that right now ; )

Painting flesh is not too bad and be can done fairly fast if you dont like it : )

Enjoy and I hope I managed to help.
Dwarf/Ogre blog (Danish)
There is no BSB kit for Ogres(or most other armies sadly)

To make one, just use an Irongut standard bearer and give him extra bits to make him look important.

Or get a Bruiser/Tyrant kit and use an extra banner to make him one.

the SM is the best choice we have for a General.

The typical competitive list has a SM, BSB, and 1-2 butchers/firebellies as its characters.

As for that deal, take it. Its a steal. All that new is around $250.

You will need more bodies though. I would get the Battalion, 2 boxes of Mournfangs, and 2 Ironblasters to round out your list. The typical point game is 2500 BTW, but check your area.

With the battalion, you can use the leadbeltcher bodies to scratch build your SM, BSB, and a couple butchers using the tons of leftover bits you will have.

Units of 2 mournfangs are ok, but they have the most potential in units of 4 with IFs, HA, and the DHB.
Current win streak: 10

Things Fluffy,my Stonehorn, has flattened: Ancient Stegadon, Unit of 5 Chariots with Tomb king, Chaos Lord, Herald of Khorne on Jugger,
x58 Forever steadfast

Thanks for the replies and all the info all.

Budget wise I will grab 2 boxes of mournfangs and the just go for more bodies and  blasters next month.
As for sm and lords. Since I will get all the bits from 2 leadbelchers boxes and ironguts and all the rest that is included.
Instead of a battalion or buying a new slaughtermaster.  What box is used best as base models for sm bsb and a few bruisers?
Do ogres come in various sized when it comes to infantry compared to lords and heroes?
The only ones that are bigger are bruisers/tyrants :)
and even then its just armour.
the Battalion is the best one out there, you get so many points/£ :)
I bought a box of normal bulls and used the extras from my battalion (bought it on ebay for £9) ;)
to make my SM,Butcher,2 Fire bellys, tyrant and a bruiser :) so for £9 I got 6 characters. Well I also bought a Privateer press pyre troll for the fireball and flaming fists for my Firebellys!
http://privateerpress.com/hordes/gallery/trollbloods/privateer-exclusives/pyre-troll
What Id recommend is find out what the average game uses 2000pts-2500pts are relatively easy to reach with fatties! :)
Id buy 1-2 boxes of MFC, 2 blasters (definitely) and 1 battalion. Just conver the Leadbelchers in it to characters since you already have 8 and youl never use more :( Tempted to make an ogre gunline... aka "Funline" :)
So yes, that will fill out your core, give you your characters. Some competitive artillery + a big smashy hammer (MFC)
I tend not to stick the dragonhide banner in them as it just makes them even more of a target than they already are. They don't need it! :)
As for making your bruisers because they are just a bit bigger... you get lots of spare armour and gutplates from your MFC. use them, they look cooler and they have shoulder pads etc
you can also stick the Greatweapons on them or make a custom shield with an Ironfist, some greenstuff, glue and a plastic penny or even a wheel from a cart. Ask your local gaming store if they have a bits box and search for something suitable :)
I used a wheel from an old chariot, with a little green stuff it looks like he's just picked up the nearest thing to him to smash some more gobbos :) :)

Anyway GL

As a general rule, proxy your character choices until you've got a good idea of what you want them to be. I've a fair few lists that only use firebellies as wizards, and one that didn't even have a BSB.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?

How did the no BSB go?!
hope you weren't facing someone with braingobbler! lol
that would be poor if you had a gutstar with no bsb and got brained :(

Isn't that spell on characters only?

Edit: just checked it: yes only on characters, so not on the bulls

Ogre Kingdoms Tactica - http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=26888.msg354223#msg354223
Small update:

Picked up the ogre deal yesterday. Good thing I always check, because the stonehorn box only had sparebits in them! The guy I got the stuff from had them from a big deal along other stuff so he didn't knew, and of course adjusted the price.
(Will be playing against his empire next week!)

Leaves me with 6 Bulls, 5 Ironguts, 8 leadbelechers and 40 gnoblars and a lot of bits. ( even some gnoblars hanging around ogres and on poles, silly buggers.
Also there was a Gorger as a bonus. Not sure what to think of the model and its function...

Also I got a lot of bits so I could make my ogres into Ironguts.
I am still unsure what to aim for though, solo Bulls, Solo Ironguts or a mix.
I will mostly battle vs Empire and on occasion vs HE and beastmen.

At the store the supplies were very limited, so I only got 1 Ironblaster and 1 set of 2 MVC. Will pick up one of each when he gets his supplies in ( hate to wait though)

Still unsure if I will start out with sabretusks at this point or add them later...

What a wall of text, to the point is actualy:

Vs empire, what core would benefit me most, Ironguts or Bulls. 2 units or just 1 big one.

If I grab 6 more ogres, I can convert 2 into a SM and a bruiser.

What unit should they join?
And what equipment suits them to be tooled vs Empire?

Go Ironguts, He will throw a steam tank you way and some armoured units.
Ironguts will open them like the tin cans they are.
So look at it like this T6 steam tank, IG's will wound on 4's bulls on 6's ;)
Id run 1 SM, 1 butcher and a BSB (normal bull conversion).
Yes id use sabre tusks they are invaluable and if it takes a turn of shooting, that's less shooting at your ig's is the way I look at it :P

Look around at a few 2000pts lists and see what tickles you pickle :)
have a few proxy games, don't worry about winning the first few (it would be nice though) and just focus on getting the rules right and getting a feel for the way you play.
Is it passive aggressive?
Run leadbelchers + cannons for support and some decent melee units usually MMU (multiple medium units) with gnoblars and sabres for redirectors.
Aggressive?
Run a tyrant, 2 fire bellys and a BSB with a medium unit of guts and a large unit of bulls with minimal ranged support (2 cannons) rest into Maneaters, MFC and core!
Passive?
Run lots of leadies, lots of gnoblars, a super bull unit with decent magic, I ran1 SM 2 Firebellys and 1 BSB.
and 2 cannons :)

Just a few ideas, theres lots on this site, check the army list section and see what sounds cool :) (that's how I picked)
I used to play a competitive melee space wolves list, so I still run the same thing with ogres! :)
march 1st turn either taking the charge or getting turn 2 charge! :)

Got some Ultramarines I enjoyed to paint. Hard to win with those.
Also made Necrons. Chose units I liked. Ghostarcs  warriors annihilation barges and wraiths as core.
... loads of gaus, hard shooting and fast and one Awsome melee unit at least.
Marines made me a better and smarter player. Awesomenes of necron is hard to beat!!

Really? I hated painting 40k. It was so boring and I didn't find it challenging :(
Fantasy characters are so much more... characterful? :)
They can be modelled and posed as you wish, they encourage it actually.
scratch build models! yes please :P

But yes, I also run a tyranid army :) (see the theme? two armies that march on their stomach) :P
But yeh ogres are by no means a breeze to play. They are not the most tactically advantaged or disadvantaged army out there. I find they have a nice balance, but with the right list and play style people will find you VERY hard to deal with. The most important thing I can stress is build the army around YOU.
Evaluate how you play, write up a few battle reports from your games and ask others to assess your strategy and provide insight. Most importantly don't take the game too seriously ;) enjoy it, paint for fun not as a chore and you'll enjoy it so much better :)

Ogres do not have a lot of models. With some bits and pieces you can turn a normal box of bulls into a tyrant, 2 bruisers, 2 fire bellys and a butcher, or any mix of the above. 6 Tyrants if you wanted lol.
All you need is imagination, which is where I found 40k lacking :)
Just my opinion, others will disagree and have their own and I do not dispute that :)
But I myself enjoy fantasy a whole lot more :)

Ogres are quite lucky in that our only bad units (I'd argue) are a couple of special characters and the Scraplauncher, so for the most part it's hard to make a bad choice. Giants are hit and miss mind

Regarding questions about the no BSB list: it was a lot of MSU I tried for a laugh. Kinda ran like a chariot list, just kept pummelling units with multiple charges. I did get lucky against some shooting and with panic though.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
Hope it can be seen. Photo's are a bit dark.
Made a few conversions and had fun at it.
Stonehorn kit just missed the Stonehorn so had a lot of bits. Also used bull and mournfangs bits.

Made a slaughtermaster
Bsb
Butcher with lore of beast
Looks awesome!
If I had one comment to make on it... your Bsb is too big ( I love the conversion ) I was thinking more of transporting it ;) lol
loving the butcher! he's my fav :)

A really good start to converting your ogres. Now all you need is Green stuff Pirate hats for your whole army ;) :P

Hooray!  Finally broke my losing streak!
Ah I got many cases. Just a matter of cutting some foam so he has his own spot.
Ogres deserve over the top banners!
Slaughtermaster however is very impractical to use with the dude on a chain. But fun to make.
Perhaps i'LL just use that one at home or as show model.
next time you make a conversion like that think about magnetising. i usually find that an easy way to make transport/storage possible without worrying about breaking.

on a sidenote, finally ordered Battlefoam for my Ogres and while putting them in a nice soft bed broke three models arms and/or weapons...
guess it can all be repaired

Good luck!
Yeah need to order some new magnets. Didn't bother to wait. So I Probably end op cutting and work in magnets

Hehe.NO matter how well packed. I always brake something in transport. . Or just drop something. ... always bring glue
Or lean on a model... or someone knocks them off the table from your dead pile, or someone admires them and drops them. Its oh so easy to break them :( hence why I was worried about your BSB. I know if I had one like that it wouldn't last 2 minutes lol.
Transporting isn't a problem for me, I use foam AND bubblewrap! :)
