Hey all in a few weeks I'm vsin my mate he has just gotten his skaven and were keen to slug it out, His list contains, 2x 40 slaves, 2x 25 clanrats with shields, 30 clanrats with shields, 20x plague monks, doomwheel, two warlock engineers with doomrockets, level 2 plague priest with dispel scroll and opal amulet as the general, and chieftan with talisman of endurance as my bsb. All squads have full command and the clanrats all have attached heavy weapons. I'm not sure where to start iv heard nothing but bad things when vsin the rats, iv read that the doom wheel must be takin care of. This is my list
-Lv 2 Firebelly Ruby ring, dispell scroll - Bruiser BSB heavy armour ,E-shield , look out gnoblar - 6 bulls - 6 bulls - 9 bulls - 2x3 leadbelchers - x2 sabretusks - ironblaster Am I on the right track to counter his army. And the frenzy monks was thinking of redirecting them and making them overrun with my kitty and Flanking them. They are forced to overrun due to frenzy?
LatteOkapi07 Feb 2013
Frenzy monks can be demolished with mournfangs, they have very little killing power beyond sheer number of attacks and are easier to kill than dwarf slayers (no armour, T4) Twice I have routed hordes of them with just 2 of my dog bears getting a charge off. Leadbelchers might not be an effective choice here, the big units of infantry won't panic after one volley and once in combat they aren't shabby, but are nothing special. Also Skaven chaff is Night/Gutter Runners and if he isn't running any there's nothing for the belchers to clear away to ensure you get a charge. Good Luck

Get rid of my leadies and put more bulls in? I was thinking about mournfang but to smaller game for them . if it was 1850 yeah I'd throw em in. The only reason I put Leadies in because of the doom wheel incase my IB decides to blow up lol what about full command it it essential ? Or just standard bearer?
Behemoth_8907 Feb 2013
I got rid of my Leadies and done this -Firebelly lv 2 w/ruby ring ,dispell scroll -bruiser Bsb w/ heavy armour, E-Sheild - 10 bulls w/ IF and standard (bsb and Firebelly goes here) - 9 bulls w/ IF and standard - 9 bulls w/ IF and standard - 1 kitty - Ironblaster How's this ?

My personal experience is that I will never enter a game without at least leadership 8... if I am not mistaken you are rolling 7? standard of discipline maybe?
I would really make the 9 Bulls units smaller or leave 1 unit and change to 3 sabretusks and Please Please Please take some scouting maneaters w. AHW... literally EVERY game I have played with these they have been able to get me the advantage in the game because they totally disrupt the enemy plans, Golden. remember he can only take 1 Doomrocket, he may have a brass orb or a Death Globe which are equally painfull, but a bit more random (shorter range and scatter) and as he has no grey seer he cannot skitter leap the Warlock engineers next to or behind your lines.
There are two things you would need to take care of, the lvl Plague priest who when lucky with spells can really damage ogres and the doomwheel. Once those are out of the way there is nothing that can take your victory...
Good luck and hope to hear what you choose.

I'm in agreement with Ardecay that a few more kitties would be helpful and that scouteaters or Mournfangs are helpful. The Ld issue can be remedied by converting some bulls to guts, the bulls are going to strike last here anyways so the GW won't hurt. Then add Standard of Discipline to them. otherwise not too bad. I might end up playing skaven (or the new WoC) on Saturday myself, is so I'll be running My SM/FB/BSB and some Mournfangs and Ironblasters. One thing you can use your blaster for is to pick off the Weapons Teams, I don't believe they get a ward save from war machine attacks and the PWM and WFT can be brutal against us.

The weaponteams get a 4++ against ranged attacks when within 3" of the parent unit. If you can get a sabretusk into a weaponteam it will destroy it easily. too bad they don't cause panic in the friendly skaven units. My opinion is that the only scary weaponteam the skaven have (to Ogres) is the Warpfire thrower. if he brings that one please destroy that one asap. D3 wounds and a panic test on a single unsaved wound can really hurt.

Oh that's the rule, ok I thought it was only against things distributed as shooting attacks. Thanks for clarifying, and then yes I'd agree a kitty can kill any team pretty easily so bringing a few more can certainly help.

Get rid of a 9 man unit of bulls and get some Ironguts and more kitty's ya reacon?
Behemoth_8908 Feb 2013
How big of a unit of maneaters do you think ardecay 3 or 4? and was thinking swift stride would go well with scout. And with the banner of discipline what unit will I put this on ?
Ardecay10 Feb 2013
I normally take 4 or more. rank of three with a GW in the backrank. I give them swiftstride and scout. banner doesn''t matter much and depends on how the rest of your army is set up. you could go Flaming banner, I usually take the +1 movement banner cuz I just want to make the charge when I get the chance. I don''t think I have lost combat very often with them... banner of discipline I put on the unit that holds the general to get at least LD 9 (I always take ironguts and add a unit of bulls for a firebelly or butcher).
Hope this helps!

Vsin skaven wouldn't it be better going with bulls more body's , str 6 is abit of a waste vsing T3 isn't it?
Ardecay11 Feb 2013
In a specific Skaven case (with the list presented) perhaps, but I love the leadership and wounding on 2's.
Behemoth_8911 Feb 2013
That's a good point, how big of a unit would you run in this size game? I was thinking 10 and putting the fire belly and bsb in there and run 4x3 what are your thoughts?
Ardecay11 Feb 2013
thats about my normal character unit. I tried a character heavy 2400 pts list some times with friends recently and have done great vs. O&G, Brets and Tomb Kings, yet to face High Elves and WoC... (character heavy meant a SM(lvl4 MAW), a Butcher(lvl2 beasts), a Bruiser BSB and a firebelly(lvl2). I put the SM and the BSB in the Ironguts and the Bruiser / Firebelly in a 7 man ogre unit, accompanied by 3 Sabretusks, an Ironblaster, 4 Scouting Maneaters and 2 Mournefangs.) I would not say that is an optimal list, but it can be a lot of fun :-)
Behemoth_8912 Feb 2013
That sounds like a pretty fun list might have to try it sometime :-)
Behemoth_8912 Feb 2013
My main block will now be 10 guts with Standard of Dis With -lv 2 Firebelly w/scroll -Bsb w/stubborn crown Hope fully it will just mow threw the skaven lines
LatteOkapi12 Feb 2013
I did end up playing Skaven on Saturday, and my guts won the day dicing up the rats and then proceeding to lay waste to a unit of 18 chaos warrios. I ran a SM, BSB and Bruiser in the front rank, and then 9 guts behind them. The SM got Bullgorger off on the turn I hit the warriors so their 3+ save became null. Sadly though my ally and I ravaged the ratmen the un-killable Tzeentch Lord on disk killed my Mournfangs and my ironblaster got smooshed by a berserking Hellcannon. The game ended in a narrow win for the Skaven/WoC.

Hey guys and girls just a update on my game vs the skaven. The list yas help me mold was great, I can see now why everyone hate Ironguts (I normally just run ogres) they destroyed everything they touch. Defferently going to be including in more lists I out deployed him so my Iron blast could take care of his Doomwheel. Also the maneater preformed amazingly him being a new player just wanted to charge everything lol, when he charged his horde of monks he whiffed most of his attacks in the end, man eaters broke his frenzy which was a relief. Kitty done there thing blocking and being a general pest , his weapon teams , ie motor and warp thrower done the most dmg taking out a total of 4 guts threw the game, there pretty nasty. Overall my mate and I had a great time was great showing him the ropes as he did with me and 40k when it all came down to it the ogres scored the victory by about 35 pts :-D.
Behemoth_8909 Mar 2013
I don't no how I forgot this this was the highlight , his horded monks charge my ogre units popping his plague banner (re-rolls to hit and wound, also getting poison from the magic phase) in a grand total he rolled and in the end killed 1 ogre , he was devastated.
