casting from 2nd rank

original thread ↗

Hi everyone

I had a discussion last Friday at the gaming table. I ran 6 Ironguts with full command, 3 wide with my butcher in the 2nd rank as the command models have to be in the 1st rank.
When it came to my first spell I tried to cast "Boneshards"? on an enemy unit. My opponent told me, I could not cast the spell, as my Butcher wouldn't be able to see them/didn't have tlos on his unit.
We had a very different view on this situation. I would say, if I can fire from 2 ranks, a sorcerer should be able to do so too, my opponent didn't agree. In the end we threw a dice and I didn't cast the spell and buffed my IG instead.

Could you help me out on this one?

thank you, T0bias
Pretty sure LOS can be drawn using the arcs and LOS of the front rank for spells and shooting. As I usually have my firebelly in the second rank!

I'd have argued that as the spell is a magic missile and is therefor a type of shooting attack it was a legit move. Leadbelchers or other missile troops can draw LoS and fire from a 2nd rank so why not a magic missile? TLoS really winds me up sometimes because people abuse the rule to effectively cheat you out of a move.

In fact on Pg10 of the Mini BRB it states:

"For one model to have line of sight to another, you must be able to trace an unblocked line from it's eyes to any part of the body (i.e. the head, torso, arms or legs) of the target."

Chances are an SM, Butcher or Firebelly can quite easily see between his fellow Ogre's in front to target an enemy unit. That or like archers you would assume the front rank duck out the way or move for him to fire etc.
Your opponent just didn't want to get hit, so he bs'd a rule.  He is probably the sort of guy that would argue for his own wizard's tlos in the next game he plays.  I like your solution though, the dice gods are usually a good way to resolve questions.
The enemy of my enemy is my double enemy.
Thank you for clearing this. If this question rises again I will quote the BRB.
As I'm into the hobby for playing the game, I don't do endless discussions. So throwing a die to decide, is my method since I started tabletop wargaming - unless of course the other part of the discussion has the written rule and it'S just me who didn't read his rules.
In my group, we play as though Magic Missiles can't fire from the second rank. I can see the validity from others arguments too.

When we have arguments like this, we also use a die to decide then take it to the forums later. The important thing is to decide and then make it official in your gaming group so it effects everyone equally.
