Sometimes magic realy sucks.

original thread ↗

Had a 2000 point battle with my mate at the weekend, Ogres vs WoC, both getting ready for a tournament.

My first turn I roll double one for winds of magic, nothing happens.
His first turn, his L4/general gets sucked in to the warp on his first spell. :D
My second turn, my SM miscasts twice, getting calamitous detonation both times and decimating the unit of bulls he was in. :|

Well worth 800 odd points.

charge as fast as you can for as long as you can and dont stop for any reason

Ogre Achievements: 35/101
I'm betting that you guys either stared in disbelief or laughed your heads off.  Probably a mixture of both.
The enemy of my enemy is my double enemy.

Gut magic:  The art of eating what nobody else wants to eat, just to see what happens.
Points in magic offense often seems to give so little returns, that I wonder wether it would be better to just go with a single firebelly (now that the comp I am playing in doesnt allow double firebellies).

The Winds of Magic are fickle in a lot of ways. Sometimes you get 2 power dice and it screws your plan. Sometimes you get 12 and you still can't get your crucial spells off.

One game, I miscasted with 3 dice casting a spell for no reason on my 1st turn. My Slaughtermaster got sucked into the warp and I had to play the rest of the game without my general and lvl4.

The fact of a matter is that you should'nt rely on magic to win you the game by itself because it's pretty unreliable by nature (there are exceptions). Magic is a tool that can be used to win the game, but it rarely win games on it's own when you make an average of all the games. We all have the odd story of 1 6th spell from some rulebook lore killing our army in one turn but it doesn't happen all the time. I remember a good portion of my Lizardmen army getting blown to dust by an IF Purple Sun... But it has happened once in 15 games or so.

At the end of the day, when those things happen, they happen. If it's in your favor, it's cool, if it's not, it blows. Be humble when it's in your favor and don't be a sore loser if it's against you. When I lost my SM on turn 1, I tried as hard as I could to make the game an actual game and actually came close in the end. I still lost, but both my opponent and I ended up having a good game, rather then me just picking up my models and calling it quits before playing another turn.
Armies played: Ogre Kingdoms and Lizardmen

I had a game like this once, in a tournament. Both of us just had the most sucky rolls ever. and not just magic.

My SM got sucked into the warp on the first spell of the game, 2 diced bonecruncher.

I killed his PoK pegasus dreadlord with Ironguts

And he broke a unit of bulls in combat, I rolled a 5 to flee and he rolled a 4.

I still won, but by a hair. One of the most memorable games ever.
Current win streak: 10

Things Fluffy has flattened: Ancient Stegadon, Unit of 5 Chariots with Tomb king, Chaos Lord, Herald of Khorne on Jugger,

I generally go with magic negation myself and instead focus on the shooting and combat... seems to work reasonably. However this is with Wood Elves/Bretonnians. Yet to play a game with OK
Had a match up against a tooled up VC lord who for some odd reason decided to cast the raise spell with two dice and was sucked up into the warp in turn 1.

We played battle of the pass and I just watched as his army approached and crumble to bits - a boring game but it was fun to see the "desperation" in the player's eyes as he pushed his dwindling army forwards.
My hood is my castle...
I once lost a Slaughtermaster turn 1, but still pulled it to a draw. Ogres are surprisingly hardy when you're not trying to fend off the killer Initiative-based spells.

I think the most depressing game I ever had involving magic though was my first ever Storm of Magic match.

I decided to buy a Truthsayer (as I had the model) and a Rhinox (as is fitting). My opponent, a Tomb King player, bought a Cockatrice.

So, early on, the Rhinox charges the Cockatrice. Stand and shoot and fear tests and whatnot have no result. They both completely fail to do anything in combat and stand there looking dumb.

Wizard wise, my Truthsayer atop his Fulcrum and the lvl 2 liche priest my opponent has on his fulcrum... do nothing. That's right, they completely fail to cast any useful spells, whilst our frontline lvl 4's end up doing all the work.

This happened for the whole game. Basically, we tried to play Storm of Magic and instead had a regular game with some funny bits of scenery.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
I once had a game with my dark elves vs my friends lizard men.  My hoard of frenzied corsairs charged his temple guard bunker blessed with additional attacks and I get 12 dice for my magic phase.  I say screw it and throw all 12 dice at mindrazor.  I get one six.  I stare at the dice in disbelief so I sacrifice an elf and I roll a 4.  It was at 43 to cast.  My opponent just looks at me and says "dispel scroll".  I haven't used shadow since that day.

You can only throw a max of 6 at a spell, btw.

I'm pretty sure (100%) that Dark Elf Sorceresses can use any amount of powerdice to cast.
Exactly - DE Sorceresses get to fling as many dice on a spell as their dark hearts desire.
