Galfugs Hired Ogres da undafootas - First Unit!! Photos inside

original thread ↗

Well I never - I came across this forum looking for information on typical unit sizes of Ogres so I could maybe get to work on some custom movement trays today for my new Ogre project and I came across you guys.

So I'll fill you in on what I'm doing - and maybe....some of you might be interested.

This is my first ever Warhammer project where I intend to have a completely custom one of a kind themed army for my Ogres.

The back story in summary is a band of travelling ogres have impressed a Orc Warboss with there gluttony and ability to destroy. He's hired them for his army; but only on one condition. They've got to look Orcy. Thinking long and hard about this - the Ogres think they've come up with a solution... to douse themselves in green dye in an attempt to fit in...unfortunately this doesn't quite cover all there natural skin colour.

Much more to it than that - I'll get a full A4 back story in at one point - but that's it in a nut shell.

These will be based in a swampland environment too - this is what most of my early work is going to focus on....

I'll be posting updates on this page as often as I can https://www.facebook.com/OgreKingdomsProject. But occasional things of significant interest. I'll pop on here. (Can't post every literal update on here otherwise I'll be spamming my own thread to hell)

Downside I'm a bit of a slow worker.

Upside - I'm hoping putting this on the public domain will gee me on to get something done for once....
This is a gnoblog you can spam it with updates as much as you like

Sounds good I look forward to seeing what you produce

Sounds like an interesting theme, can't wait to see some models!

Neither can I  :P Still uncertain of how I'm going to paint them. Got a few ideas. I'm 100% certain they were originally humie flesh coloured though.

Also like the idea of an ogre slapping another ogres back and leaving a hand mark... bleh - trying to find some broken models on ebay to test a few ideas

I've brought out my ogres from the battalion box twice and considered making one but want to focus on getting the bases right first....!! (You should see what I'm planning here by the end of next weekend assuming the post man is kind - personally think I'll need to do two or three testers....)

Bought a bag of snotlings off ebay to incorporate some how too. Also toying with some squigs

Love the idea of getting some orcs & goblins models into the units somehow too but at the moment devoid of ideas on that front

Didn't make a start on movement trays today sadly, was spending far too long casting with the plaster.
58 Snotlings arrived today - as well as a few other essential items. These will need the bits of metal removing from there feet for the most part. The plasticard I got wasn't what I expected either but hopefully it'll do the trick. Still waiting for my all important Resin though

And here's a little sneak preview of what I'm doing with my bases to help me create a swamp effect....wasn't going to do this tonight but got carried away...

Aye - I have  vision in my head of what I'm aiming for. Whether I can achieve it is a whole different matter. I'm still waiting on the master ingredient I need to achieve it.

All the plaster bricks I made at the weekend will be used in the Bases & on the Movement Trays (Still got a kg of plaster left too) Waiting for them to fully dry (another day ish) before I start painting the ones I need for now.

Got a boxful of materials gathered now which I've posted photos for on facebook which might give an insight into what I'm doing (maybe)
Just waggled the base before I left for Pool League.  Didn't stick down with the PVA as expected but gave me a whole new idea
Well the post man clearly hates me - don't want to proceed without my next (and only) missing item.

But did a few tests on a stone wall scheme; there's 6 in total.

2 each on the two in the middle. And one on each side.

Anyone have any thoughts? Or suggestions to improve?

*might help if I had. They will be used to show a old abandoned and partially/totally collapsed segments of buildings

That first couple of columns look good, but why not give the abandoned/collapsed building varied colors?
Not everything wears down the same in the same environment.
If you're planning on having rubble on all the bases, how about arranging/jigsawing the rubble and distressing it across each unit.
Aye - I'll definitely take that on board for the bases; they will have theoretically been exposed to the elements. My main focus when doing this wasn't just for the bases though as I'm planning something for the movement trays.

I've bought some brown 'lichen' too. to drab over ruins.

Thanks for the feedback
Well - I've been a bit of a muppet - my last/vital ingredient is coming from USA. So won't be for a few weeks. So I've re-ordered from a UK company to get it a bit sooner. (So hope it's good otherwise I'm getting two boxes of the stuff)

So I've taken the option to rejig something as I thought my earlier steps were wrong.

Applied Vallejo sand to the bottom; allow to dry. washed in sepia, glued two painted wall sections down.

The Base isn't as is; I'll be building up the 'bed' of the base tomorrow/sunday to get it closer to what I want....

Went to the beach and found some interesting rubble. So waiting for it to dry before proceeding.

So in the mean time I've had a play with Ogre skin for the theme. It's by no means the finished article; although I have neatened up one more than the other...

Thoughts?

I'm not sure which I like to be honest.
The Orc in me likes the whole green one.
The brain thinks the one with some flesh showing and dabs of green show he's painted himself.

*I'll dig out my proper camera at some point - deleted two as they look ridiculously shiny. & In real looks better.

Seeing the Bretonnian I had in the background earlier wish it would come out a bit better (maybe it's the wash I've used?)

But overall thinking I'm liking the pure green look better

They look shiny.... Not in real!
I think some spotty/splotchy paint on top of a flesh tone will look better than straight green.

Tried splodges, didn't like it. Considering ditching the whole paint them selves green and painting them selves fleshy with green war paint images all over
In terms of your army's fluff, the one with flesh showing makes more sense. However I think that you might have gone about it wrong; I think that if you were to paint the ogres properly first, and then just grab the green paint and paint in large downward splotches from the top of their heads, not bothering to make it all fill in; then it would work better. (then you could highlight the green where it's needed.
Yeah that could work.....Before long I might need to do a bit of paint stripping on these guys  :D

This is why I was looking for some cheap ones off ebay to faff around with!
Green warpaint might look better and suit the fluff more

Thanks Dave - think it would be way easier (and look cooler/better)

Think that's what I'll do....wonder if I can get away with painting over the green...
I must admit I've been a little slack - I went to the beach last week to collect slate for my bases.

Whilst down there though I came across a fantastic selection of colours on the beach from rubble brought down stream. So I brought some back to test;  waiting for it to dry was a pain. It still wasn't today. So I've just thrown them in the oven for 10 minutes... SOLVED!

Pictures will follow by Sunday - I want to test my resin hopes out....

Hoping this halves the work I need to do and will look good (I hope!)
Base attempt 1

once it sets it'll look a little less wet so you can see the vegetation under the water, then I'll chop away the black base to give a all round watery base.... fingers crossed...

Honestly, I don't have a problem with the black border. I can understand your reasoning, but my concern is that taking it off will weaken the structure of the base, and while it might look good, it wouldn't last well. Also, some might argue that you're using a "smaller" base than intended.
But it does look pretty damn good.
I had previously considered that on a small basis - but I was kind of hoping common sense would prevail amongst most people.

E.g. 3 40mm bases - Optimisation = fighting 8 20mm bases.

If I do leave it on I'm going to paint it a pale brown I think at the very least.

I also think I've poured too much resin in this test. So Don't mind chopping the sides off for a look.

This is a test base anyway - and I think I've done something wrong here. (Vegetation with the tuft not setting quite how I'd like - but then we're only 8 hours into the curing process of 36-72 hours) My modification will be to place the Grass tufts into the resin 1 or two hours in next time assuming this isn't quite right. Plus I forgot the Field Grass... DOH

So for this one I'll cut it away and see what everyone thinks anyway.

I'm happy with the process though and have since layered a card with sand ready to proceed on a mass unit scale. Going to get each base matching the one next to it. (Pattern effect)

Here's the start of a movement tray too:

Models aren't glued down either - blu tacked em as something easy to pick up while undercoating.

I may or may not have just bought this kit....

You probably didn't...  :>D

just to be sure, is this going to be you Stonehorn or Thundertusk in disguise???
Nice work so far.

Correct - I've asked for some outside help so I can magnetise between Stonehorn/Thundertusk mounted ogres as I generally don't do this kind of stuff....

So Bought

Butcher model - who'll ride the spider as either a bog standard Stonehorn - or butcher riding Stone Horn.
Spidey Model - for obvious reasons. Going to include the Goblins where I can.
Thundertusk for all the saddles and ogre riders etc.

End result I'm hoping.
Spider can be - Thundertusk/Stonehorn/Butcher riding Stonehorn..
And also all magnetised so I can use my generic normal thundertusk which is in the box and I wouldn't want to waste.

This gives em 4 possible variations. 3 for the spider. One for the Thundertusk.

If that makes sense.

Just wondering what colour(s) to go for

*Ordered my OK book finally aswell last night - aswell as a few paints to let me crack on painting them
While I have time - which color scheme you reckon. Or any other suggestions? WARNING SPIDERS!!!

The last two.

The blue one almost looks fake. :)
My hood is my castle...
Made a boo boo on my base....when putting the Vallejo Sand Effect - I had it up against the plastic of the base. So when I chipped off the black base perimeter. Just looked garbage as I had white sand pushed around the edges of the resin. So I'm re-doing it in a longer method. Still have a sanded base washed in Sepia. Then building it up over 3-4 glues with the beach rubble.

& mpdscott - I can see where you're coming from in regards to keeping the black permiter on now in terms of keeping structual strength. Was a wee bit flexy and could break in the long run - going to give it one more go though anyway.

Also - want to test poking it with a lollipop stick a few hours in to create a wave effect (Ogres walking in it)

Edit: Thanks for the suggestion shadow lord. When I first saw a blue tarantula I was like. Wtf. That's way cool.

But now I look it it....I think dark and sinister would be better. if I was to pick the 2nd to last one. I might have to break the legs up a bit with a bit of black in the middle.

Just noticed with that last one, he's walking on a watery base, it's a sign I tell thee, a sign!!!!

Been looking at my brushes too. Think I'm going to have to make an order with rosemary and co. screwed a couple up with trying to spread Pva in the base
Base attempt two

Almost exactly the same as the first one except I built up the gravel bed over many layers of PVAing

Update in 48 hours ;-)

Very nice. Looks like you've ripped it out of an aquarium.
Would the effect be better if you poured the resin after the ogre is attached?  I worry they will all look like they are walking on water
That has also crossed my mind ;-) My main concern is getting the basic look and feel right at the moment.

After this tester I think I'll be done (after a few more slight modifications)

Then what I'll do is prepare all my bases pre-resin and get cracking on the painting!

*That's where this project griiiiiiiiiiiiiinds to a halt....spidey will distract me too though....going to book a few days off work to try and encourage myself to get painting though.

If you saw my planned movement tray at 4x2 on the last page - I aim to place my bases on the plasticard in a 4x2 formation also. Then I intend to pattern match the bases. E.g. on this  test base at the bottom left it ends with water and grass. On the connecting base it will also start like that.

If anyone plans to do this I have a small tip (realised it after my first pour but forgot to do it for this one (too eager)). Pre pouring of resin put pva round the edge of the base. This seals any gaps and is easy to peel off once dried.

Thanks for the feedback on my base too mpdscott - I certainly think the field grass adds to the completion of the base too....
Test base complete - opinions?

Argh, I wanted that effect on my swamp bases but the stuff Im using is not nearly as good as the resin.

What feedback I can give, yes, paint the ogres and pour the resin afterwards, otherwise you will get the Jesus effect.
Wow.
That is all.
That looks awesome, I wonder if you could put a clear plastic ribbing underneath to fix the flexing problem?
My Gnoblog:  http://www.ogrestronghold.com/forum/index.php?topic=26340.0
I really like this base, what was the resin you used to do this? (that blue spider is real? freaky, not seen one of them in my garden! I wouldn't go with it for a colour scheme though)
I used Envirotex Lite.

Test Ogre 1 I've quickly knocked together - I'm not 100% Happy to be honest.

I'm far more used to barding on my Bretonnians when covering such a large surface area. Any tips/thoughts?

The iron gut wound me up to be honest... wasn't entirely sure what I wanted to do with so going to have a sit and think about that one

DOn't know if I'm being too picky but already trying 3 other different skin ideas.... Will throw some photos on later. I genuinely can't decide though. Maybe I'm just being too picky?
Not all Ogres in a tribe have to have the same skintone. There's nothing saying you can't mix and match the 4 tones you're working on to get a lot more variety in the army.
Honestly, I think that's what I'm going to be doing when I get around to painting my guys.
Maybe I'm just being self critical - but I see some of the skin paint jobs on here and think mine's a bit pants

Anyway here's a few others I've just done with the original - bed time now though!

They're a bit pinkish to my tastes, but hey, I paint mine grey :P.

If it was up to me, 2nd photo, right one has the best tones i.m.o., remember that they have a lot of sun exposure, so a bit tanned is normal
So it turns out my dislike of the shininess can be remedied by a Matte Varnish.

Now need to work out best for me to buy...I've never varnished in my life - I've never minded touching up my paint if it chips. But the shine is just bugging me to hell.

*Edit: Think I'm going for the Army Painter Matte - going to look for one I can just paint on though...

Bloody new washes adding to the job...I miss my magical Devlan Mud & Ogryn Flesh

Those white eyes on that last Ogre will be going too - I was just putting the dots in for later....
Ihave been generally happy with army painter matte....though sometimes I get a white effect from it, but I think that is due to using the last of a can or spray during in too cold a temperature.

Tried another one....what do you all think - or am I just being too picky?

Not got highlights yet on the trousers or the weapon, beard, teeth, eyes, but generally as a model.

I actually came back today and liked my first model.

Then hated it again!

*edit - nope - hate it

Perhaps mix a drop of brown and/or green with the water to make the swamp more muddy? Looks great so far!  :D
I had considered that - might do it on a random non-extensive test and see what I think.

Someones talked me into doing the movement tray exactly the same too - so I need to buy some clear perspex sheeting to cut up so I can create the slots for the guys to stand in.  Sooooo much work.

I'll give a jist of what I want to create here anyway

2 Ogre Battallions
4 Mournfang Cavalry
20 Gnoblar Trappers
2 Sabretusks
1 Ironblaster
Thundertusk/Stonehorn
1 Slaughter master
1 Firebelly
1 BSB

I think that's all for now
I'm sure none of you here are wanting to see my average painting skills

So I've decided to speed up the process slightly of what you all want to see.

A based unit with movement tray.

So What I'm going to do over the next week is paint all the boots, all the trousers etc. get that done.

Then base them. I can worry about the skin after - which by the way will look like the below picture.

I have named my tribe also - da undafootas... I'll be using foot templates (of man or beast) as a tattoo to break up the skin.

Started work on my movement tray. Purely guess work in what I'm going to be doing here. As you can see I've ring fenced the bases with a plastic. I then plan to add another fence around to create a mold so to speak. SO I can create a high perimeter ridge.

Once set - I'll remove the plastic, remove the bases, and layer resin in the centre much like the bases. That way I'll have a lip on my movement tray. If it works... (it's a big if...)

Fence #2 just completed...hopefully you can see where I intend to pour the resin. I'm hoping I can easily remove the fences I've put in once set....

The unit that's going in this is mostly painted. My aim is to have this with bulls completed end of February... AHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
First Ogre Unit Complete with movement tray - after much swearing (a lot). Photos will follow in 24 hours when the resin has dried....There's going to be a LOT of photos too...

That's one very impressive movement tray.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Damn that looks good, very good.
I can't think of anything else to say.
