Ogre Kingdoms Battalion- The most effective build

original thread ↗

Hi
Just wondering; what would you guys consider to be the most effective way to use the models in the OK battalion box? That is to say, what models would you suggest building from this box?

I saw an article/ post on here about the old army box (i am assuming it's old as it included Gnoblars which are no longer in the bundle).

If this subject has already been covered, feel free to re-direct.
Thanks in advance
Build 6 Bulls and 6 Ironguts. Make one of the Leadbeltcher bodies into a Slaughtermaster. And make another Leadbeltcher body into a BSB. Plenty of bits included to do it.

With the other two bodies make either 2 more Bulls or Ironguts according to personal preference.

That will get you a legal 1000 point army right off the bat.
Current win streak: 10

Things Fluffy has flattened: Ancient Stegadon, Unit of 5 Chariots with Tomb king, Chaos Lord, Herald of Khorne on Jugger,

No it won't you would have 2units and 2chars, you need a min of 3units to be legal, now if you purchased some 20mm bases and made gnoblars out of the remaining gear in the box then you would have a legit army
Those who live by the sword, get shot by those who don't.

or skip the BSB (use a standard from the command if you want to use a bsb in a 1K game) and make a unit of 3 Leadbelchers to get to 3 units.

Or I guess you could deploy one of the characters outside of a unit at start and move it into the designated unit turn 1  :P

Characters do not count towards unit numbers

You could always make 5/6 IG, about 3 bulls, 3 LB, a char and convert the rest into maneaters.
It shouldn't be too difficult to make a few ogres look like MEs with all the bits you get with the battalion.

That gives you a char and 4 units to put on the table at around 1k.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

I did this with the Gnoblars and also the bear-traps (both the stand alone one and I shaved the hand off the back of the one being held by an ogre) which I use as the front rank of my trapper units.

I also had some 40mm bases floating around, so I got a collection of the random extra bits from the sprues (barrels, weapons, etc.) and made sort of trophy piles and supply dumps that I use for back ranks etc. They can fit well into pretty much any unit and make them a little more unique.
Without a doubt we have one of the best battalion along side beastmen. I brought two on eBay got em pretty cheap. As i play mostly 2000-2500. I had the same problem when I was starting didn't no what to get or to start but I reacon just getting two and then making 12 ogres and 12 Guts along with 8 Leadies. 8 might be over kill but I see it 4 Leadies on each flank to get rid of chaff and harrasment and even war machine plus there good suppost as they are jut ogres with guns the flank charge could be enought to turn the tables in that critical combat and 12 Ogre and guts is a solid choice or even just making 6 Leadies and make enought 2 ogres or guts or a conversation for a slaughter master / butcher / Bruiser . All up not including upgrades two battalion with 12 ogres 12 guts 8 Leadies 1220 pts good foundation. Then throw in magic , bsb some cav , a cannon (I recommend) :-) either way you just really carnt go wrong with just plain bulls :-)
I just recently started playing Ogres, and my answer to this would depend upon how quickly you plan on expanding into a second battalion and/or if you have your eye on a particular special unit.  Ogres are in a great position where all of the units based upon the standard bull body are solid.  You can read around the forums but there are a number of situations where regular Bull Ogres with Ironfists are more durable than Ironguts.  Obviously Ironguts get S6 (S6 is, in my opinion, the threshold of Warhammer nirvana when the hit dice are being rolled for wounds).  A lot of people run with both.  Plus, the part of the internet dedicated to non-Ogre players seems to hate "gutstar" builds, so its probably more sporting (not to mention less boring for all parties involved) not to run a giant block of Ironguts.  Leadbelchers and Maneaters are both great and come down to personal preference.

tl;dr Build 6 Bull Ogres with Ironfists, 5 Ironguts, convert one Irongut base body to a Butcher and leave the 4 Leadbelcher bodies without arms for a few games.  Proxy them as both Leadbelchers and Maneaters to get a feel for the units then assemble them with the unit you would want soonest.
Ok, thanks for this. I was wondering what was the best way to use this box of goodies. Having read all this it occurs to me that it does actually make sense to just get two boxes and just get building.
The extra bits in this box are (almost) ridiculous! I am thinking that with 2 Battalion boxes you have enough spare bits to make another 24 Ogres if you just had the bodies.
As i intent to really go guts-out with building up an OK army then i will no doubt keep buying and building stuff, i just wondered on the best way to start with just the one box. I am pretty sure this has been answered, so thank you
