Salt Desert Basing. Any ideas?

original thread ↗

Hey guys,
I was recently asked about basing my Ogres so started giving it another thought.
The way I'm thinking I would like it to look is pretty much like the Desolate Sands level of Diablo3. This site has some good screenshot of what I'm talking about.

Talking to a friend he suggested Crackle Paint.

Anyone have any ideas or advice?

Looking at my Ogres I'm not entirely sure that's the best match anyway though. Anyone think that's a bad idea and suggest another style base?

I did it on a regiment of bulls, but I didn't like it. Can't really bring anything interesting into the bases and they become boring, imo.

Ziterdes Dry Earth Paste is one I can recomend if you decide to try it out.
found this tutorial for Ice bases which is amazing.

Skipping some underwater effects and painting it opaque with browns and tans then some sand and dirt effects might achieve something like what I was thinking

and here's another less complex crackle paint example.

You could also make the bases interesting with a variety of bones/skulls, dry grass, and possibly the occasional beetle/scarab or reptile. I would look into what realm of the Warhammer world you are placing these guys and go from there.
