So we've beat the Tyrant issue, what about Hunters? If you're taking a Slaughtermaster, can you take a hunter on a stonehorn? Has anyone ever run a list like this at all? I am contemplating this as an alternate to the Tyrant as I think that this is a great model and some decent rules at least. Plus the Stonehorn crushes on the charge and with Thunderstomp. Add in the Hunter attacks and it's a decent show on the charge. Thoughts?

stonehorn can be justified but the cost of a hunter on him...points are better off spent elsewhere IMHO.
however i have always wanted to deck out a hunter on a stonehorn for a heroic last stand match. would love to see how he goes

The only time I might consider it would be for a proper monster mash with two stone horn as rare and as many mournfang as I could fit in. The hunter is still a prime target for cannons but a charmed shield helps and you've got target saturation.

I've thought it would be interesting to give the Hunter a Berserker Sword, since the model has frenzy anyways I mean, if you're gonna do it, do it right lol...
It'd be fun, but remember the Stonehorn mount's points would go straight into the Heroes allotment, so unless you're playing a 3K+ game (maybe 2600), you're going to have a tough time getting a decked BSB with a StoneHunter. And the BSB is really important for this mediocre-Ld army.
But if you run 3k+, and go grand army, imagine 4 Stonehorns and a StoneHunter among them... lol. Just, lol. a 4k list of sillyness

I'm liking the look of a stonehorn-mounted hunter with a Great Weapon, Other Tricksters Shard, and either Talisman of Endurance and Charmed Shield or Armour of Fortune.
The Beauty of this build is actually the Great weapon. It makes you strike at the same time as Thunder stomp, giving you more options for challenges etc.
You also still have enough points for a decent BSB in a 2500pt game.

Works decent against Daemons unless they have a flying Thirster to take it out.

I really like the look of the stonehorn, but I'm just not feeling the love for the Hunter.
Though it does let you squeeze in another Stonehorn into your hero points, which isn't a horrible thing.

If only the hunter could ride a Mournefang. Ok, the looks will be one less Stonehorn but you could actually make lists like this work...
Captn Morgrim26 Nov 2012
I wonder if this is the way to go to include a Stonehorn in a double Ironblaster List at 2250 pts. The necessary BSB would still be possible (around 169 pts) and the hunter could at least take the charmed shield and a gw. A load of pts in characters still.

I've ran it. Gave him a Greatweapon and the armour of Destiny. Are there better options? Hell yeah! Is it cool running 3 Stonehorns at the enemy....Damn right it is!

By the time you've outfit a hunter with a stonehorn and decent wargear (crown of command, charmed shield, etc.) you're out of hero points. I consider the bsb to be more important.

This keeps coming up...
Hunter on Stonehorn with GW and 50pts of gear - 441pts Bruiser BSB with Heavy armour and 50 pts of gear - 184pts
total: 625pts on the nose. Which is doable in 2500pts and up. It's more a choice between Hunter on Stonehorn and hero level mages.
So probably more of an option if you were running dual-slaughtermasters or a more defensive magic phase, but it's still entirely possible to have a kitted out BSB and a stonehorn mounted hunter.

Thought i'd share:
I've recently attended an 8 game tournament in my countries capital (130 entrants) I ran a hunter on stonehorn. Using ASF sword, initiative portion, charmed shield.
He was exceptional. I found not many people would shoot at him because of charmed shield and the natural resistance of stone horn. As a result my hunter in 7 of the 8 games got into smaller units and destroyed them overrunning behind enemy lines on many occasions.
While it does limit your hero's (i ran a BSB) it was definitely fun to play around with and can be effective with other target saturation.
He made his points back many times and only died once to a dwarven gunline.

Hi dkou, any more details about the tournament? Sounds like you did relatively well?

ASF sword.. I completely forgot about that! I always forget about the Hunter's higher initiative. I may consider running him now actually!
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
dkou26 Feb 2014
Jimmy: I did OK. Three big losses that brought me back -Dwarves, Warriors of Chaos & beastman.
Summary: I came 29th. which i was happy with with my low'ish comp score under the swiss system means when i lost 15-5 i was losing 19-1 or 20-0.
Dwarves my hunter was the only model that got me points. 2 organ guns, 2 cannons and an anvil and i think a bolt thrower combined with ranged troops. If i sat back and played safe i would have lost with the comp so had to go for it.. a few failed charges (despite statistics being on my side) cost me more points.
WOC Killed my slaughtermaster & cannon turn 1 and all went pair shaped after that. MVP was my hunter. Killed a chariot, giant, turned a battle against warriors (ran them down) then took 2 wounds off a floating tzen lord (3+ ward with rerolling 1's) hunter died that game but stonehorn survived so points were safe.
Beastman I was confident in this match up. *face palm* Turn one of my pups died and caused 3 panic checks.. i failed all 3 including my hunter. Terrain had seperated my bsb from that side. The beastman army was a magic missile list with rerolling to wound item (hagtree?) each magic phase he killed a unit. then cleaned up turns 4-6. outplayed.
ASF sword was great! Gives me re-rolls against a lot of armies and against elves/heros I can pop my potion. He normally gets into combat turn 2 and creates quite a mess. I found he was perfect for killing units of 15 or less infantry or supporting a big unit. 3D3 impact hits and 4 str5 ASF attacks = ouch before a unit can attack. Just ask the big unit of witch elves he hit with 3d3+3 str6!

Hunter failed a panic check? Isn't his stonehorn frenzied and therefor immune to psychology?
