Quick Rules Questions about VC

original thread ↗

I dunno if those goes better under the FAQ forum or in the Thinling Realms, but since this is about another army and not our own I decided to go with the li'l ones ;)

Played a game the other night, and I had some random questions about one of his characters: He had a Strigoi Ghoul King with the Shrieking Sword (idk what it's called but it's the one that gives the Terrorgheist shriek)

1. Can the Shrieking Sword that VC have be used for Stand and Shoot when the unit is already in combat? Also, can it be used against a rear charge from a unit that is already in combat?

2. Does the Strigoi Ghoul King have Red Fury? Also, what does its Unending Hunger ability do (if it even has one?)? He kept rerolling things and then saying that his guy was recovering wounds, and since I have no previous experience against one of these characters, I couldn't do much about it.

3. Not specifically about the Ghoul King, but... Can you cast Invocation of Nehekh on a unit that hasn't lost any wounds? He kept doing that to get the Corpse Cart's ASF ability.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated, and will help me to plan better against future VC opponents.
24 Gnobs! Wow, 2 sets, crazy!
Toothy, Workie, Sir Reginald, and Busty (for the bus explanation)!

43/101 Achievements earned! Woo! Got some of the tricky ones!

New book WLD: 17/8/2 ... A good quick game to get me re-invigorated, glad it was a win either way lol

No you can't as Stand and Shoot is a charge reaction and engaged units to get to make charge reactions. Page 17 of the BRB. So no to rear charge stand and shoot as well in this case. I can't find anything about not allowing a unit being charged in the rear to stand and shoot, even if it doesn't make much sense.

As for 2 and 3, I don't have the VC book so I can't help.

Well you can't shoot at what's not in your front arc?

The Vampire's hunger rule states that a vampire can ONCE PER TURN roll a dice and regain a wound if that dice roll is a 6, BUT the vampire must have killed something earlier that turn before he can use the hunger rule.

Remember he needs to KILL something not just wound something, and it also doesn't matter if he killed 1 peasant or a whole unit of knights, he still only gets 1 dice to roll for hunger each turn.( so can only regain 1 wound )
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

Does the Ghoul King have this too? Or is this just Vampires/Vamp Lords?

I thought that VC couldn't stand and shoot since they are undead? The shrieking sword shouldn't change that.
My horde of beastmen against your ogre horde?

Ok but I get a horde of Leadbelchers.

You might be right, I have no clue about how undead works, never played them, don't have the book. While they can't according to the BRB in that specific scenario, it's probably worth checking what you mentionned.

No undead unit can stand and shoot under any circumstances. However, both the Sword and banshees can use their scream in close combat in their own shooting phase.

Red fury is an upgrade from the vampire powers list, and yes the Ghoul King can take it. He is a vampire. He does have The Hunger rule, but only once no matter how many he kills in a phase you only roll once and only on a 6 to recover a wound.

Yes you can. The unit is still targeted by the spell and that's what makes corpse carts annoying. Note the Invocation is always a bubble effect, even on low power.
Also the death shriek is not a shooting attack. It's a special attack that takes place in the shooting phase. You can shriek into pretty much anything anywhere in it's FA, in or out of combats.

And incorrect about the CC. The lowest IoN only targets a unit. Next one up at 12+ casting targets all friendly units within 12".

You might want to have a look at that again.  :|
Ok. I just got done playing a 6K game last night with VC. But I'll give it another look. Might be wrong....long game...little dain bramaged this morning....
ONLY IN A COLLAR CAN A OGRESS TRULY BE FREE....
The Ghoul King doesn't need a sword for the Geist to Shriek, it's the power of the monster... and it's a technique that I have been noticing a lot of lately.  Bring two of them and just fly around the board screaming at everything.  Of course hard to pull off without your general close, but once it gets it's first fly move of 20", 10" is good enough to hop around screaming.

Have to love Invocation, always good for popping off the corpse cart's innate ability.  It's slightly hard to kill with a regen save but a lucky Ironblaster shot will crush it. I'd suggest targetting it early to make sure he's not striking 1st.

As a VC player I have not yet incorporated the corpse cart, but will be soon as I am still sculpting mine from the White Lion Chariot.  But my stint with VC have pushed me back to OK... tired of slow and steady.
The corpse cart is a great unit for a footslogging VC list. It is pretty resistant to cannons - and do you really want to be firing at it anyway with things like mortis engines on the table? I find the corpse cart just sits there and is generally a pain but not quite worth the effort to remove.

I'm not sure the OP was saying the Ghoul King was actually on a Terrorgheist, only that he had Skabskrath. If you take a Ghoul King on a Terrorgheist that's almost certainly your general unless you're playing silly big points values. So he can fly around quite happily but it's the rest of the army that will have trouble marching. I've not seen this build and I can't imagine it very effective. It has all the issues of ridden monsters and can't even take a charmed shield, it limits you to playing without a level 3 or 4, it paints a big target on your general's head and it puts your march bubble on a mobile monster.
