What SINGLE current rule change/addition would make you include a hunter in your list?
IMO would be loner if you could have him in a unit, say of lead belches would make him pretty good.
Or maybe let him be the general?
Your thoughts?
Those who live by the sword, get shot by those who don't.

Including him in a unit of Cats removes the max unit size of 10, and he gets a look out sir from them. That's a winning unit.
Or just let him be a Bsb.
Or both.
Both.

I'm not sure the hunter can be redeemed easily with one change.
Part of the issue is big names. If longstrider gave you +1M and swiftstride and beastkiller did something worthwhile and big names didn't come out of magic points...
If the hunter had some kind of particular ability against big game - e.g. D3 wounds per hit regardless of weapon even at range. Blood vulture is a cool idea but needs to be a bunch more powerful (sniper?)
Look out sir from cats isn't a bad idea and makes some sense, but I don't think BSB makes any sense nor would I want to put my BSB on a hunter anyway.

Someone here mentioned a good idea on a previous post.
If the hunter allowed you to charge single tusks out of your unit, like a heat seeking missile, I would at least try and run him for kicks.

That would be excellent. If Longstrider gave +1 and Swiftsride, and he could join units I'd love to use him in Yhettees!

I would take him if he was within 9" of a gnoblar units with trapper, then the dangerous terrain test from a charge would be applied on a 1-3, not just on a 1. So in other words, it would boost their dangerous terrain check. I would find that fun, tactical, useful, and in line with the lore. In fact, in the last army book, wasn't there a synergy between hunters and gnoblar trappers?

Mournfang mount option and a choice to be the general if there are no lords in the army would do it for me.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

This. I assume it would be limited to all mundane attacks, but definitely this.

The imagery of a hunter on a mournfang leading a pack of sabertusks is so cool. I can see it now, in a film, in my head, and it looks great! Shame he'd just get shot by a cannon.
charge as fast as you can for as long as you can and dont stop for any reason

If Beast Killer gave HKB on all his attacks.
A heavy rule that is according to fluff.
I concur! Even though I use mine from time to time.

Oooh. I like the mournfang option. Maybe he could take a hunter-only enchanted item that gives him the bound spell bonecrusher or that magic spear attack in lore of beasts...
Zolas25 Oct 2012
Lossing the loner rule would be nice.
I was also thinking being a hunter maybe ability to re roll wounds. As he can pick out the tender spots or something.

Lose loner. Then let whatever unit he joins Ambush; he's leading a "hunting party."
Or heck, just let him and his cats ambush.
Definitely needs a LoS roll from his kitties though.

If Beast Killer gave HKB on all his attacks.
My thoughts exactly.
shaun560326 Oct 2012
While losing the loaner rule would be nice, it Dosent fit his fluff.
Making him a bsb Dosent either, but LD9 I can see why it a popular thing.
The post I put up few days ago about sending out cats would be the most useful and balance rule change. Only send the cats out after he dealt a wound on LG.
However the sniper idear should apply to LG, it would make sense and Balance him cause sniper with d3 baby bolter thrower would a little broken.
I try to run one as much as possible it many different builds.

Lt him be the general in a stonehorn army!
8th ed results so far! Ogres W - L - D 8 - 1 - 3 Units my 8 leadbelchers have annihilated in one turn : 30 hammerers, 20 blackguard, 5 chaos knights, 18 temple guard, 34 DE spearmen
AlexHall29 Oct 2012
Losing Loner or giving him BSB would destroy his fluff what would make him different from a bruiser other than Ld?
Giving him a Mournfang mount and allowing him into a MFC unit would make an already brutal unit almost broken.
I think allowing him to lead a Yhettee unit and maybe give them a boon (re-rolls or -1 to hit, etc) would be within his fluff.
I like the idea of improving the gnoblar traps but only to a 1-2 within 12"? Scraplaunchers could use his Ld and re-roll scatter within 12" or less?
Implementing these options would give more reason to field otherwise undesirable selections. Making him boost your already typical units is lame.
psychichobo04 Nov 2012
Mournfang mount would be cool. I'd also like to see him have scout and/or ambush, or vanguard, or some combination. He's a master of the wild, he should be able to wander off and turn up in a really inconvenient spot for the opponent.
Ogres - because who honestly likes 2 wound heroes?
Mr. Gnoblar14 Nov 2012
Hey Gut Kin... it has been a while...!!! Taking (stealin') the idea of a Mournfang-mounted Hunter; I'd like to see a Hunter special character that may take a Stonehorn or Mournfang as a mount, and have his army list allow for Mournfang Cavalry to be counted as a core selection. This idea kinda revives the character, Ghark Ironskin, only with Mourns rather than Rhinox. Of course to really add steroids to this list, allow any "rhinox-driven chariot to be selected as a special selection rather than rare. In a nutshell, the Hunter special character would be leading a beast-heavy army.
AlexHall15 Nov 2012
...Mournfang Cavalry to be counted as a core selection...
That'll work!
Now just shake your opponents hand before the game and skip to the punch.
Zolas15 Nov 2012
Mournfangs as core would just be so harsh. But I think it would be nice to have at least 1 of our character classes able to ride with them.
