Leadbelchers

original thread ↗

Having a horde of ironguts, i also have a unit of 10 leadbelchers. Would this unit be more effective if i make two units of 6 leadbelchers?

I also have 8 maneaters, EHW, musician, banner eternal flames

Who will be the next Khan in the Ogre Kingdoms?
Maybe,

It depends on if you are thinking of using the Leadbeltchers as a combat block late game. They are still ogres after all.

If so, then you want the bigger unit.

If they are just there to do damage in shooting, make them 2 squads of 6. They can split fire if they need to.

I was mucking around with a unit of 18 leadbelchers. Two ranks of 9, add BSB with flaming banner and character with crown of command and reform to horde formation when charged. Bring lots of dice!

You can reform if your being charged? Or a round previous to the charge you mean?
Thanks for any clarification  :)
If you are planning on using them to harass the enemy with shooting most of the game I'd think of rather running them in 3 units of 4.

Units of 4 are great for clearing chaff, and when you concentrate their fire it's still 8-12 LBs shooting at the same target.  3 units running 2x2 will also be easier to move around and keep them out of combat until you can bash them into a flank somewhere to help out your main combat units.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

Either one round before (combat reform, still shoot) or as a combat reform after the first round thanks to the crown of command.

My simple rule of thumb about leadies is that if I am building for combat, pistolmaneaters are more versitile, since I only want to pick off select targets.  If I am building gunline, then the Leadies are much more efficient.  I think there are two approaches to using them, both touched on here, but a lot depends on what lore you rock on the the SM (if you take one), as Heavens makes Leadies a lot stronger in the shooting phase.  I am a pretty big fan of Maanaam's aproach of a couple 2x2 units zipping around giving flank support, even in a combat army, though.

Other than pairing a Firebelly with the unit to add Flaming shots1, does anyone boost their Leadbelchers with any other non-spell effects? (If there are any?)

I'd be hard pressed to *want* to put a BSB with them, but assuming you did, what banners would be 'worth it' ?
Razor Standard2? Swiftness?

Edits:
(1)Doesn't add to unit

The firebelly doesn't give flaming shots the leadbelchers unfortunately (unless they get Flaming Sword cast on them). I've put a BSB with the flaming banner in with them before for fun (in a mirror match vs. ogres). It was great for making trollguts useless. I pretty much just shot him off the board (battle for the pass was not his friend). I usually just run 2 units of 4 on the flanks of my main combat units.

Since I run 3 - 4 strong Leadbelcher units, I find them struggling with larger infantry, but on the other hand, they are great at killing chaff if need be AND what 's more, killing lone characters. I also like my Leadies to shoot lone characters to take out those pesky casters and a larger unit would be wasted for that. If the LoS-roll works for them while outside an unit, I still kill some infantry OR the caster - usually both at the same.

Neither standard mentioned adds much. The FAQ clarified that the Razor only works in CC, and Swiftness doesn't do much either for them. Including a BSB in this unit would add to their combat ability and give you a reason to use a LookoutGnoblar on the BSB.

This is also a tactic I 'm fond of using, but also the reason for me to include a bellower. That is, I try to do so. A reform before barging into combat late game gives us more impact hits and the bellowers gives us the flexibility to move before that as well.

I take a unit of 5 usually. For my next game I will swap them out for a giant.

The Razor standard wouldn't do anything anyway. Leaddies are already Armor Piercing.

Yep. So far, Flaming banner or bust seems to be the consensus.
Even that might be hard to justify a dedicated BSB for - unless as previously mentioned you expect a lot of regen.

Wouldn't it make more sense to drop the Burnin' banner on an unit of Man-Eaters with pistols? Their damage output might be lower, but a single woundin' hit is sufficient to negate regen. So, the Man-Eaters shoot the Hydra first and negate its Regeneration powers, followed by a barrage of shot from the Leadies, who don't have to worry about Regen either.

I don't know why anyone still thinks the flaming banner confers flaming onto LB shooting.  There is no banner available to boost the LB shooting power.  /thread

What? Of course the flaming banner gives the LB shooting flaming attacks. Why wouldn't it?

Well here is my take on it. The Flaming Banner gives Flaming Attacks to the unit with the banner. The Flaming Attacks special rule is described at page 69. In the 4th paragraph of the rule, it says that unless otherwise noted, a model with this special rule has both Flaming shooting and close combat attacks. Since there is no mention of the Flaming Banner being active in close combat only, it does grant Flaming shooting attacks as well.

I think the confusion here is arising from the fact that Leadbelchers don't have the option for banners of any kind on their own, while the people suggesting slapping on Flaming for them are accounting for that by suggesting that the army BSB bring it to them.
