Heroes and Zeroes

original thread ↗

Hi guys

I've been reading various threads today while bored at work and it got me thinking about all the crazy little stories we have about battle experiences. What has been your most memorable WHFB moment be it for good or bad?

For example here are mine.

My best and probably most memorable WHFB moment was a few weeks ago. I was playing my TK's in a 2k game against my mates WE's. At this point the TK's had been sucking hard and were on a serious losing streak. On turn one I let loose the SSC's and one scattered from my target directly onto a Treeman. My oppoent thought all would be well and good until he sat down and thought out the situation. S9 so no armour, magic attacks so no ward save and flaming so double wounds. I roll a 6 and he sits there laughing in disbeleif, he wanted to surrender there and then but the threat of a smack for making me set up my hordes of skeletons only to pack them away again swiftly sorted this out. On top of this my 3 Necroknights battered his 6 Treekin in 2 rounds of combat... nice! This was particularly memorable for me as my opponent is generally a moany little pansy who quits as soon as the battle looks like he might lose.

My worse was 3 days ago when my girlfriend took my Ogre's against my HE's and she tabled me on turn 4. She has VERY little wargaming experience and it was the first time she used them. In the end I lost everything I took bar 5 Shadow Warriors. She lost 2 Ironguts and a Sabretusk. I'm still getting ripped on now

Back in 5th ed 40k I've had a Lobba crewman (Gretchin) survive the Cataclysm Psychic power from The Doom of Malantaai only for the Doom's ability to kill himself instead of the Gretchin! He's now covered in warpaint in memory of such a great day! In the same battle my opponent had his Carnifex shoot itself with a Heavy Venom Cannon (Shoots 12" forward and scatters 11" backwards) and a few of his warriors shot themselves as well :D

There's a few of mine. Let's hear your war stories!
I cast the maw spell on a unit of Vargeists, he failed 4S tests so I had the prime opportunity to mash the unit up a bit. I rolled the 4 dice and they all came up ones.

I had a SM kill himself on 2 miscasts and rolling 2 1's  for the lore of the maw attribute.

My Ironblaster on 2 wounds was charged by a pair of HE chariots. It won combat killing 1 chariot and chased the other down.

my bulls lost a combat by 45.

I had a game where no units on either side were destroyed.

My Slaughtermaster was challenged by a skaven character. The skaven strikes first and all 4 attacks hit on 4, all wound on 4. He thought this killed my SM but He had 1 wound left. My SM attacks back and kills the little rat and gets 3 of his wounds back because of gutmaw...like a boss.

In the old skool book my tyrant had an ultimate badass moment. He charged out of his unit at a warboss on a Wyvern. He tenderized them both. It was amazing ;)
Great weapons make Great weapons.
NEVER YIELD!
Remember a zero moment quite some years ago when I rolled all 1's on seven dice.  That was pretty funny.

Had a unit of mournfang take a charge from Karl franz on Death claw and actually killed in and his giant chicken in 2 turns.  Couldn't complain there!

I had a heroes and zeroes moment in the same combat.  A unit of 2 MF (one a champ) was fighting a deamon prince in the front and a unit of 5 marauder horsemen in the flank.

I issued a challenge with my champ (so the horsemen couldn't attack my unit  because they were in B2B with champ) and then my champ went on to curbstomp the deamon prince in their challenge.  As the deamon prince fell to my awesome cavalry my MF riders suddenly decided marauder horsemen were much scarier than they looked and promptly decided to run away from the horsemen who caught them and cut down my 2 MF riders.

P.S. Contrary to popular belief this all happened in the SAME combat phase, killed a deamon prince and then broke from combat running from 5 marauder horsemen and got cut down.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.

This made me laugh.  Congrats on the Prince kill but bad luck on getting run down  :S

Not necessarily all ogre kingdoms stuff:

Had Marneus Calgar roll 4 1's on his armor save IMMEDIATELY after someone said "oh, it's not like Marneus is going to fail 4 armor saves..." We all had a good chuckle at that one.

Had a high elf lord hold up a hoard of maneaters for 3 turns due to good ward save rolls, and my failure to reform appropriately

Had a sabertusk charge, win combat and run down a chaos spinebeast

Had a gorger rear charge a stubborn unkillable dwarf lord and get 3 killing blows against him (2 of which he saved!) in the final round of combat (to give me the win). This same dwarf lord had been holding up my unit of IGs for about 2 or 3 turns.

Had a chaos warmamoth charge my ironguts, pick up my Slaughtermaster & fling him into another unit, only to lose combat and get run down.
My 8th Edition Ogres Record: 0 Wins, 4,547 Losses, 7 Draws.

I don't have any Zeroes that I can remember, but Warp Lightning Cannons have been Heroes. Once for myself where it killed 10 Knight in a single shot after getting a misfire and throwing that large template at them.

Another time a fellow club friend shot one of his Cannons at a White Lion unit (toting 20 exactly, and two character) The Heroes made their Look Out Sir rolls, but the rest of the unit died. Afterwards the other Cannon was fired and killed both characters. I want to note that one of the Characters was a Lvl 4 with Ethereal and everything magical in base contact is mundane, but the Cannons are magical at range. :D

I had a Savage Ork horde charge a lone sabretusk once.

The Warboss made way to meet the sabretusk and both were I4.

Anyway, the Warboss thinks he's got this handled. Afterall, he has the Charmed Shield and Opal Amulet. Plus he's got the pretty nasty sword.

Ooops, he used his Charmed Shield and Opal amulet to protect himself from the effects of the HH miscasts that were levied on the 2 goblin shamens he had been standing next to.

Sabretusk gets 3 hits, 3 wounds, and the Boss only has shield and LA to protect him. He passes none of his saves. To add insult to injury, the Savage orks are the ones who actually finish off the Sabretusk.

I had the gnoblar riding ironblaster kill a fully kitted Saurus Old Blood on a Cold One mount (saurus had been previously wounded in a different combat, but the gnoblar got in the killing blow)

Dreadnought in a drop pod deep struck directly in front of two medusa mortars.  First medusa fires and has the shell scatter 11 inches back and land on the medusa next to it for a kill.  Talk about a hook shot!

Had a BA dreadnought armed with blood talons miss with 4 of it's 5 attacks, then have that single attack go on to kill another 14 orks (successful wounds generate additional attacks, so one dice kept rolling successful hits and wounds for the next 28 rolls)

Played a full 2000 point game of 40k (blood angels vs imperial guard) in 55 minutes.  Had another game, also blood angels vs imperial guard, that had 17 vehicles explode and turn into craters.

And of course it's always fun when your fully kitted slaughtermaster general gets sucked into the warp on his first spell, first turn!
I had that happen. It was a turn 1 casting of bonecruncher on 2 dice. And I only killed 1 Cold One Knight for my trouble.

Still won the game though.

one of mine was almost identical, but I managed to get 4 chaos knights for my trouble.  And I managed a win too.  karma balance?
Managed to drop the doomrocket while only trying to fire it with 4 dice, killing a few Stormvermin, but also taking the last wound off my screaming bell. To make it worse, the seer lost his last wound to the fall!

Had my slann bounce a miscast onto another slann in a lizardman vs lizardman game, only to have it bounced back onto me (we both had cupped hands) and of course the roll was 3 on the table... Epic fail.

Biggest hero moment has to go to my dwarf lord though, 2+ rerollable armour save, but got assassinated by 3 killing blow wounds... Until I remembered he had a shield so could parry! Triple sixed it, then killed the assassin! Epic win :-)
8th ed results so far!
Ogres W - L - D
          8 - 1 - 3
Units my 8 leadbelchers have annihilated in one turn :
30 hammerers, 20 blackguard, 5 chaos knights, 18 temple guard, 34 DE spearmen
While still pretty new to Ogres I was nearly tabled by turn 4 by an O&G army.
My unit of 12 Gnoblar Trappers closed out 3 by running down a unit of Night Goblins (3 times their size) to within 1" off the opponents table edge. (To me crossing the table in a game with gnoblars is an achievement in itself).

Turn 4 they show off their marksmanship and shoot a unit of Black Orcs as they march into range on the way toward my battered IG unit. 4 BOrcs down for the count.

Later, they would go on to receive a charge from that unit. With dangerous terrain test + stand and shoot, only 5 of the charging 8 completed the charge.

They managed to survive combat and roll snakeyes to hold as turn 6 ended the game.
26/101 Ogre Achievements
Awesome moments during the last few months included this:

This Arabian Marksman was the last to survive a charge from a large herd of Spider Squigs and held the ground for 1 turn. My High Elf mate commanded the Empire (7th ed rules back then) against my Savage Greenie hordes. In the background, ye can catch a glimpse of my Halfling artillery crews.

Another epic moment was my first game with the new Ogre book. My scouting Man-Eaters held the centre of my line against a veritable onslaught of Beastmen and their pets.

... until relieved by their Irongut chums.

The battle continued with several hilarious moments. In no particular order:
- My Butcher took control of a Wizard's tower, only to be killed by some low-strength magic missile from the Beast Shamanwho then got vapourized by a healthy dose of Leadbelcher shot. In retrospect, I established a tradition there, killing lone characters with leadbelcher sniping quite often.
- The Beast General got killingblowed by the Scrappalauncher despite the usual cheesy Beastlord armour loadout. We used the large template accidentally, but we laughed so much at we let it stand. His Beastiegors then butchered the Man-Eaters at the end of the game.
- And the high point of it all: The 'guts and Man-Eaters proceeded to stomp not only the units seen above, but also the ambushing Beastie units. They also barged into a Giant, who after taking a bite out of my Bruiser General toppled over and squashed half of the Ironguts. The Ogres had nearly got the Giant with impact hits alone but the Bruiser failed to kill it before it could do damage.

We had a few more pics from that battle, but I can't find them anymore.

My favorite Hero moment:

A unit of 5 chaos knights charged my 10 trapping gnoblars. 2 Knights died from DT test. One knight died from my stand and shoot. Yes, one shot I got a 6 to hit, a 6 to wound, and he rolled a 1 for his armor save. His last two knights through some unlucky rolling killed only 2. And his charge CR was cancelled with my my BSB bubble. Chaos knights lost by 1. They broke and my gnobbos ran them down...

My zero moment:

A unit of 10 HE archers fired at my giant who was within close range. He got 8 hits. He got 6 6's from those 8 hits and down went the giant...

Ironically, I still play with a giant alot, and haven't played with gnobbos since...
A lone Sabretusk moved up to a vulnerable 15 strong elf archer unit.  The avenue was too narrow for blocks and the Sabretusk was able to get between and out of line of sight of the CC units.

The archers fired, inflicting a single wound on the Sabretusk and the CC units ignored him.

The Sabretusk charged and was close enough to deny Stand and Shoot.

Great you say, a weedy unit of elf archers.  OH!  Behold, for Teclis the Archmage resides within!

Elfs struck first, landed 5 hits and failed to wound.  The Sabrecat reared up and landed all 3 attacks, successfully wounding and killing Teclis.  The crowd goes wild!

Combat res sees the elf unit w/banner flee off the board.  All-in-all, the game was won  single handedly by a lonely Sabretusk.
