our top 5 ogre houserules

1 no unit cost more than 450 points

2 no more than 2 mournfang / 4 leadbelchers / 4 maneaters per 1,000 points played

3 no hellheart and greedy fist

4 no death magic fist

5 no double rares

Whoever's coming up with the house rules really has no contemplation of the idea of balance.

We are like we are because of the existance of Purple Sun, Pit of Shades, and the existance of Loremasters in other books.

So what are the equivalent (stupid) restrictions all the other armies face?

Indeed this.  Those are quite heavy restrictions for ogres alone.

If I had to guess the house rules for the rest when facing ogres would be as follow:

- No purple sun

- No dwellers

- No mindrazer
 

Have to say, I just realised I follow those house rules for ogres  most of the time anyway without realising it.

We play 2000+ and I've never had more than 4MF/8ME/8LB in a game, I've only once run double IB and I've rarely used hellheart or fist (or other lores except fire really).

The only rule I might break from time to time is the 450 points per unit, and not even far then (like 480), and still I'm kicking serious ass.

P.S. My VC friend and I have an unspoken rule that I won't field hellheart as long as he doesn't use Psun, but neither of us use those things in other games either.

You forgot the ever so annoying Pit of Shades... I hate it when my Ogre's get dragged to their "DOOM"

My friendly gaming group often use restrictions like above but we always impliment a ban on dispell scrolls (or their equivilants), it makes for a more interesting game because rather than your opponent just scrolling that important spell they actually have to get off their ass and do something about it (i.e. attempt a dispell). It makes the game better in my opinion because so often has my 5 turn ass kicking streak been stopped in it's tracks by 1 spell being scrolled. It feels cheap, dirty and down right un-friendly in our opinion so we exclude it from every list these days. If we are having a serious and un-friendly game then we go scrolls a plenty 

I can't remember the last time I took a Dscroll and a lvl 4 in the same list...

I know once I decided to load up on scrolls for my casters (took most of the scrolls in the rulebook), wasn't very practical but DAMN it was fun.

There's just something about a badass vampire lord changing into a helpless frog and then getting curbstomped by an Irongut champion.

Then they will have to bring in house rules to nerf our awesome magic of old, as well as think of a rule to neuter the tenderizer.

"No Crack's Call" needs to be in that list of not-allowed-against-Ogres too.

This is a common restriction on all armies at tournaments in the UK, and those using the ETC (or similar) comp packs.

For some armies, its a good idea when trying to prevent too many of the lists that players cry about, but with ogres it really does encourage Mournfang Spam, which a lot of people hate. even a unit of 5 M'fang is under 450pts, but a unit of 12 Guts is not. M'fang get much more hate from other armies but when the comp turns up rocking 2 units of 5 is AOK but 12 Guts in a single unit? Oh no sir you may not.

In fact the MAX Gut unit size in this comp is 9 (when running full command, 10 if not) when the very same comp allows a unit of 60 Dark Elf warriors. Still, you can always stomp that into the floor with your unit of 5 M'fang with the DHB which is CLEARLY way more balanced that 12 Guts. Clearly.

This on the other hand seems to be a far better Comp of M'fang in environments where comping is deemed necessary.
