Robs Ogres

original thread ↗

After watching and reading all these fantastic Gnoblogs here I had to sign up an start my own Gnoblog.
Last month we started A tale of X gamers at our local GW. I joined with ogres
We'll built and paint 250pts every month. Thats a maximum of 6 ogres every month.
Thats exactly why I like ogres. You only have a few models so there is plenty of time to convert them and make them just the way jou like them. I hope to learn a lot more on converting and greenstuffing while building this army. I haven't done that very much before.

For next friday we have to paint a core-unit. I decided to make a unit of 6 bulls. These guys are pretty much finished now. I only have to add a dull coat to the back rank an maybe paint a few more details. Most of the shoulders are sculpted as I wanted to repose the arms. The legs of the standardbearer and the guy in the back that is cilmbing out of the water are sculpted too.

I made a start on the mournfang cavalry. I don't like the way GW made the ogres ride the mournfangs. The mournfangs are pretty much ok and the riders too but they sit way to high on the mournfangs. For this reason I decided to convert the model. I cut the seat away and made it a new one. Did a few changes on de way the rider is sitting to make it more dynamic and gave it a rope to steer the beast. I also added some shoulderpads and gave it a shield as riding a mournfang with a Ironfist will not work. I don't like the spots on the mournfang where the skin got away so I sculpted som fur to make ik look better. I'm pretty pleased with the way it turned out and started painting it. It is a very early WIP as I only finished the skin of the mournfang in this stage.

I also started workong on a butcher. I don't really like the way the butcher of GW looks. It just too much gore and mutations wich doesn't really make him stand out as a leader. I converted this guy from an old bull. This is the first time I did so musch sculpting on a model. For so far I like the way it turned out. It is still in progress. I only painted it black to see if every area was smooth enough (wich wasn't as you can see) I'd love to see some comments on this one as I'm still learning the whole sculpting thing. The 'chair will be some kind of a rock once finished maybe I'll add a gnoblar serving the butcher but I'm not sure yet. Any Idea's to make it more stand out as a butcher/slaughtermaster?

It's the first time I'm photographing mini's as well. Any tips on thes would be apriciated too.

Cheers!
Rob

Time for some updates

I almost finished the mournfangrider:

I'll only paint some little details on this guy and than it's finished.

I put some paint on the butcher as well:

Far from finished yet more on this one coming soon.

I started converting the 2nd mournfangrider. Still lot's of work to do on him.

Let me know what you think!
The Mournfang Rider is looking superb Rob! Some cool conversions so far too.
Great work, I love those conversion, poses on regular Ogres are fantastic. I also like your metallic parts a lot and bases are very cool too. Are they all sculpted like the butchers seat or it's something else?
http://aandrze1.blogspot.com/
Thanx, i'm pretty proud of the way they turned out.
The bases are sculpted from greenstuff and/or miliput. It's pretty easy to do as stones never have a way they have to look. The rusteffects are pretty easy to. Would you like to see a tutorial on this?

I'm now struggling with the heavy armour on the mournfangs. Are there any good ideas on this? I cant seem to find any..

i know there are already many tutes on here for rust but one more is always welcomed specially when your results are that nice looking, who knows there might be a gnoblar in it as well  ;)
Those who live by the sword, get shot by those who don't.

Your basing is excellent, very impressive!

Thanks RJ_Payne,

Well, here's the tutorial for making rusty metal:

I just stumbled in here out of random but I have to say the poses of your Ogres displayed are amazing, its like every one of them is a different character, especially the Mournfang Rider and Beast.

Also I don't know if its just the lighting but the bronze hue all of your models have looks amazing also.
Thanks Gundehar! Your comment means a lot as this is exacly what I'm trying to make. It's pretty hard to make dynamic poses on ogres as they have the same body. I found out a sharp knife, a saw and some greenstuff really helps to get them more dynamic. I must say I was in doubt when I totally cut trough the body of the 2nd mournfang rider to twist it a bit but sometimes it's the best solution to just do it.

I don't know what you mean by the bronze hue in the photo's but I can tell you how I took these pictures.
Just daylight, a tripod and some black paper for the background. For the right colours I photograph in RAW format so it is very easy to change the tone in the pictures. (They are mostly too yellow.)
I won't explain what a RAW format is as is has nothing to do with ogres. Google is your friend.
small update:

I painted 1 leadbelcher. I had this model laying around for almost 3 years and I think it was time to put some paint on it. I'm not very sure if it really fits the army because it's pose is not as dynamic as the other ogres. still I'm pretty satisfied with the way the paintjob came out (Not really stisfied about the cannon, maybe I'll redo that).

more pictures here, here, here and here

cheers!

Some updates again:

Finished the 2nd mournfangrider (finally)

more pictures here, here, here, here and here
I like to paint something on the banner but I really don't know what. Any Idea's?

Unit so far. I'll add one or two more.

Finished the butcher

While looking at these pictures I found out the hand of the arm that he is eating fell off so I'll have to fix that. I have some Ideas for adding a gnoblar too but I'm not very sure on that.

I also finished a second leadbelcher.

still not very sure or these guys fit the army that well but this is the unit so far

That's It for now. Next will be some Ironguts.
Tell me what you think.

Cheers!
I think they all look really great, butcher turned out awesome. I like the bases a lot too, the water is a cool addition. Keep it up, I'm waiting to see more of your work :)
http://aandrze1.blogspot.com/
I haven't got much time to work on my ogres last weeks but here is some work in progress on the Ironguts:

The white stuff on the bases is miliput as I was running out of greenstuff.
I still have some sculpting left on these'(add some armour and finish some details) but you can already see how they are coming out.

Comments & critism appreciated.

Rob
looking great.
I love your bases, they bring so much more out of the models.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
I agree, the bases takes them up even further.

Nice stuff!
