obsidian blade

Is the obsidian blade really worth 50pts? To ogres our heroes and lords have high str wouldn't. The ogre blade be better from a Apts standpoint? That would give our casters S6 and our brutes S7, y would you need more than -2or3 modifier?  What units have that high of armor? All i can think of is dwarves gromril, and full plate from empire?

Seems situational, doesn't it? Not worth it in my opinion.

For ogres, not really. For some other armies capable of fielding Low S high A characters it can be very useful.

However it does have another issue in that it relies on the enemy having a good save, much like the lore of metal.

I actually find it more worth it in high Strength armies, as you need to wound as well, but it isn't a very great sword unless if you want a good reliable answer to knights. I have seen full on knight Empire armies (without any Demigryphs) that worked well. The sword would help there, but you normally have other good answers to these things.

I've "hunted" 4 it and I see it on alot of lists, what's the attraction there? Is it the absoluteness of it?

It's a hard counter to Knight lists, which is coming in handy these days because there are two lists that really use those to good effect in 8e (Empire and VC). It will also help you deal with certain types of characters.

The item does seem rather pointless for Ogres. I'd be inclined to take the Greedy Fist for the S bonus and additional affects at 10 points less. Chances are this will put your character at S5-6 which is easily 2-3 points of armour and the item has additional uses against wizards as well as heavily armoured knight type units.

Well, it has its uses. Certain armies have high-survivability heroes and a 1+ re-rollable is pretty tough to deal with. There are a few builds in particular where this sword can really save your bacon, such as dealing with the Ramhorn Doombull (nicknames include "please stop hitting me I am sorry I attacked you!"), unkillable dreadlords and tzeentch sorcerers on discs, particularly when combined with the ever-popular Other Trickster's Shard.

Not something I think I'd pack in an all-comers list but definitely something useful against specific matchups.

sword o strength and giant breaker is 45 points and on a bruiser is S7 or -4 to armour. 1+ is now a 5+ save. plus wound T5 on 2s and not 4s like with O blade.

the only problem with giant breaker is that you have to accept and offer challenges, sometimes i dont want my tyrant in a challenge with a silly DE Dreadlord of stupidly annoyingness. Obsidian Blade is a good choice when backed up by good armor/ward save and i often use it is storm of magic games where I know that i am going up against dragons and other monsters so that they get no scaly skin save.

Actually you just cant refuse the challenge with him. so you could accept with a champ and still be fine.

I like it, high strength is good for wounding easier, but there is nothing like have the OB and the tricksters other shard when facing something like dwarfs or chaos generals.

Personally I thnk its worth every bit of its 50 points. don't get me wrong I owuld love it to be cheaper, but it's not over costed to me.
