Battle report request! Vintage Ok versus New!

original thread ↗

Not sure if this is the right place, but I thought it'd be a decent place to throw down the gauntlet to the most people.

I recently saw a battle report of Bell of Lost Souls involving the previous Tyranid codex being pitted against the new Tyranid codex (yeah, its an old report, but I just saw it, so there  :P).  Now, watching it made me sad because the vintage player was a moron, BUT I really like the concept.  So, has anyone tried something similar with the Ogres?  I know the new book is overall a grand improvement, but the old book certainly had it's moments.  Let me know, or point me towards a battle report.
ouch, don't want to be the vintage book player then:
Ogres became cheaper, Ironguts became cheaper.
Leadbelchers became better and more reliable.
Giant became better.
No problems with just casting spells.

Ironblaster, mournfang, firebelly are new.
The big monsters will win

Things we would miss in the new book:
Loremaster, tenderizer (remember him?) another 5+ ward save.

Now all we need is the 7th edition rule that said if the models are killed they don't get to fight and we WOULD be a broken army! lol

If I may add, the ogres have much more variety. Keep in mind, i was told straight from Phil Kelly himself that the idea was created and next thing you know, GW wanted them on the market SASP! Which the ogre amy was left with ratios and limits with rules du to the limited play testing.

In the new book, some units dropped in pts and also got nerfed in a way as other were raised in pts and got an ability more. But the ogre player has more possibilities as to build his army.
Who will be the next Khan in the Ogre Kingdoms?
It would be interesting
lore master and stacking of the old RiP spells cast on a 3/6/9
 formidable tyrants  T6 characters
spamming bone crusher to kill mournfang
cheap gorgers rear charging tying up units
trappers
the old book wasn't too bad
My first Pet Gnoblar  Fonzie
My second Licky

Chuck Norris was the fourth wise man and gave Jesus his favorite gift, a beard. The other wise men were so hacked off, they got Chuck Norris removed from the bible. Mysteriously, they all later died of Roundhouse kick related injuries.
*Puts on rose-tinted glasses* Standardiser Tyrant pwns all of new book, no contest.
I don't suffer from mental instability. In fact, I enjoy it immensely.

Gutlord Inquisitor: FORUM FIGHT! Me, I'm betting on the stronghold. Sure, they're outnumbered with thick skulls, stubborn bull-headedness and an inflated sense of self-worth, but hey, they're Ogres.
I don't see a way the Vintage Ogres win, frankly. Ironblasters, Mournfangs, better Leadies, and cheaper troops will see them off the field in a HURRY.

Don't forget the large blast special choice scraplaunchers.  I imagine 3 large blast killing blow shots a turn would put paid to the mournfangs pretty quick.  For that matter, Cathayan Sword-Eaters would rape mournfangs.

Honestly, I think my old Irongut deathstar would stand up to a similar formation from the new book.
Wait, how would Mournfangs do anything but laugh at the Scraplauncher's salvo? Did you forget that KB doesn't affect monstrous beasts/cavalry/infantry? What does that leave you - S3 shots? Bring it on. Oh, and don't forget about the Ironblasters showing them what a REAL artillery piece is supposed to do by blasting them into oblivion.

Cathayan Sword-Eaters also cost close to 100ppm for a T4/3W model with a 5+ save at best. If you're willing to plunk down that many clams for Leadbelcher fodder, go ahead. They won't make it across the table. Bottom line is, the new book is vastly superior to the old one in pretty much everything but Tyrant builds.

yes, actually, I did forget about the killing blow immunity  :P  And since we've established that there were very few entries in the old book worth spending points on, then 90+ points per maneater isn't that bad  :D  They might be leadbelcher fodder, but I've never seen the Mournfang fan-boys bother to take leadbelchers in proper numbers.

That being said, I agree with most of your statement, with one exception.

I'd say that the old magic is at least even to our current magic.  New magic is more versatile, but the old magic method of stacking huge numbers of RiP buffs had massive benefits.  With the standard butcher/SM combo, it was almost a guarantee that you'd be adding 2 or 3 buffs to the stack AFTER dispels.  And the wonderfully-cheaper Runemaw would protect against lots of the crap anyways.

This is all academic anyways.  I want to know if anyone's actually tried it!
If you compare the Old Maw Lore to the new Maw, it's roughly even, yes. But this book has access to BRB Lores, and that is what is going to turn the tide in its favor, because neither flavor of Gut Magic stands up to the real Lores. Another key aspect to note is the arbitrary army composition restrictions impinging on list optimization in a major way.

If by "Real" lores, you're referring to the two abominations that are Life and Shadow, (and their lesser spawn Death) then I agree.  I'd favorably compare Maw to the other lores out there, however.  But the Runemaw takes alot of the sting out of even those three nasties.

Ah yes, the army comp restrictions.  Almost forgot about those :P  Not sure how "major" a restriction they would be, but it would be damned annoying.

Hell, since no one else is willing to try this, I'd gladly stand up and give it a go... but I don't have the old book anymore

BTW, what is all the hype over the old Tenderiser?  I always ran my tyrant with a Cathayan Longsword.  I don't even remember it's stats.
It would be a very difficult battle, but honestly, if the new beasts of the ogres weren't used, the old book may have a chance, due to a larger selection of magic equipment that are pretty good. Of course, that would be silly to say, since the charm of the New Kingdoms are the new beasties! lol...

The game would have to be 3,000 points, at least. Just because ;)

Oh, and yeah the large template Scraplauncher was nice, but against Ogres it's not quite as effective, and if you want to include the army restrictions of the Old Kingdoms, then you're talking about needing a unit of the Gnoblars that were almost completely useless (since the Trappers were a seperate unit and not an awesome unit upgrade).

It'd be a fun challenge eitherway. Would you use 8th rules, then? Or use 7th rules for the old guys and 8th for the new guys? Just for the fun of it? lol
33 Gnobs! Over 3 Packs of Trappers! Woot!
Gibblet, Nibblet, Crunchybit (from Slaughtermaster achievement)

New book WLD: 20/10/2 - Yay tourney wins and random game win!

I never found the gnoblars useless in the old book; that's what the Runemaw would bounce spells onto!   I always love watching people throw 6 dice at pit or dwellers, suffer a miscast, and then counce the spell onto a 40 point unit of gnoblars.
The only thing the old book has going for it against the new is the old Maw lore.  A bunch of loremaster lvl 1's running around buffing stuff with T and regen for VERY cheap casting values.

Other than that the new book outshines the old one in almost every way.  No contest.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.
Slaughtermasters were a lot cheaper in the old book, allowing a Tyrant and SM combo at lower points. Bulls were more expensive but had that extra armor piercing, so they aren't strictly worse. The Runemaw was cheaper, while Grut's Sickle, Tenderiser and Thundermace were significantly better. Mawseeker was much cheaper and widely available too. The old book had a playable list. The problem was that 'list' is singular.
