Only very new to whfb and my friend has a vc army and we are trying to work out if a ethereal character can join a unit of non ethereals?

Yes they can, there is nothing in the rules that says they can't.

ok thanks - only asked because the OLD rule book stated they could only join other ethereal units

Yeah, Ethereal chars can join non-ethereal units but non-ethereal chars cannot join ethereal units.

A Great example of this is Heinrich Kemmler. His cloak allows him to take either Ethereal or Fly each of his turns. By landing him in Grave Guard you can then opt to have him Ethereal turn 1, fly off to another unit turn 2 (say skeletons for example) and then on turn 3 be ethereal again. Whilst he has fly though he is unable to join units of Spirit hosts or Hexwraiths etc.

Ethereal Slaan or High Elf chars using Folariath's Robes are also great examples of Ethereal chars joining non-ethereal units.
