Dark Vengeance - New 40k Starter Set

Quite possibly some of the best models GW has ever produced, and certainly the best they've ever done for a starter set. That Hellbrute!

Groan... I was hoping the cultists were a false rumour because they are hands down the most interesting aspect in a CSM Codex.

And I had hoped to stay out of 40K but all those awesome models in that starter set makes that nigh on impossible.

Pretty damn juicy, I gotta say... May finally start that CSM army I've always wanted

Crap - I got the WD and I will most definately do an IG army using cultists and Ogres with lots of conversions.

Is it me or are the DAs getting shafted in that box set? 

The models aren't the snazziest, though they're solid for a starter set in my eyes. In terms of competitive match-up, they pretty much trounce the baddies, as they're supposed to.

Oh ok... all I saw were the tac marines and characters. I didn't see the termies or bikes. Much more balanced than I originally thought.

The DA side is way overpowered pointwise.

Captain and Librarian(and Chaplain if you get the limited edition), 10 tac marines, 5 terminators, and 3 bikes.

vs 20 Cultists, 5 chosen, a souped up Dreadnought, and a Chaos Lord. No contest really.

The only thing they will struggle with would be the Hellbrute. Plasma and an Assault Cannon arn't the best anti-vehicle weapons. But they will mow down everything else.

Yeah, its better then a lascannon. But thats not saying much. Its only about an 11% effectivness rate.

Love how they made some slight adjustments to the Dark Angel models, really makes people go "Wow! I have never seen that!"
Can't wait till it comes out because that way I can finally play against Chaos again.

All honour to DA but the chaos models are so awesome I have a hard time remembering when I saw something as luvely.

Just ordered the limited edition this morning, finally gonna start the DA army ive allways wanted! woho! anybody else got it?

I don't want to spend too much of my hard-earned dosh before uni, so I'm going to wait a bit. There's a good shop in Hull that sells traded-in Warhammer and usually has plenty of stuff from the starter sets, so I might pick up a handful of Chosen and Cultists for pocket change.

I wonder if the Hellbrute has all the options it has, or is it just one build out of the box like all other starters?

I can only assume it comes as is seen in the photos. Every picture I've seen has the same Hellbrute, and I would've assumed that if it came with alternative options, GW would have jumped at the chance to show us. Shame really, as that would've been proper cool

I'm not sure about that. I think its perfect for new starters. Its hardly the sort of squad composition choices someone who has been playing the game for a while would make I think they've selected and designed the models specifically for the purpose of appealing to people just venturing into the game for the first time, whilst also managing to appeal to existing hobbyists as well.

What I meant was, that each unit has to play differently. Like the bikes: you have twin-linked, relentless, Hammer Of Wrath, different movement and a near immune to instant death right there.
Hellbrute: He is either a walker or a monstrous creature. But if he is a walker, then you have the facing rules, DCW, vehicle damage chart, inflicting Instant Deathxand the fact that a well placed missile can put him down.
Chaos Lord: (I don't know why, but everyone in my local atore thinks he would mince the termies on his own) Warlord Traits, Slay the warlord, any rules he might have, mark of chaos, power weapons.
Chosen Marines: Power weapons.
Grand Master: Invulnerable save, power weapon, and Warlord traits.
The Special Chaplain: Preferred enemy, power weapon.
Termies: Can never persue, instant death, always striking last and invulnerable saves.
Librarian: A whole bunch of rules about psykers and force weapons
Alot of rules right there, and I haven't even gotten to weapon rules.

Having a variety of rules is sort of the point, I think, it's supposed to allow players to experience most of what the game offers in small amounts. For me, the old SM vs DE starter was rather boring because it was really just infantry vs infantry without a huge degree of variation in statlines. Of all the vehicles that could be included, a walker is probably the best kind as it operates in a manner similar to infantry whilst still introducing important aspects such as AV and HP. Don't forget, new players are supposed to use the missions booklet, which introduces the units in a staggered manner.

I think the models are amazing, and that amazement is increased considering its a starter set! Compare this to Battle for Macragge and it completly blows it out the water.
I think how they have included lots of diffrent rule types for the units lets beginners experience a snapshot of the whole game in the set,
Also the fact that the units are usuable for seasoned gamers (Plasma gun & cannon not missile launcher and flamer!) means it will appeal to people adding to their collections too

I bought the limited edition too, now do I want the case also...

I noticed the novel is by CZ Dunn, who also did Malediction, another Dark Angels book/audio drama. I'll probably end up getting the novel and the audio drama in the end, which tells the story from both opposing sides.

It is definately an all around box for beginners as well as vets, collectors, gamers etc.

Beginners = snapfit models and what appears to be a solid mission/campaign book to play the game.

The rest is obvious.

I can't believe I missed this, yeah Battle for Macragge was the pits, you got like two Ultramarine Combat Squads and a heap of Tyranids to which I'm clueless about. It's succesor, Assaunt of Black Reach was pretty darn good though, some very nice models. I still have the Assault on Black Reach Space Marines that I'm going to paint as Ultramarines, as my token Ultramarines force (even if it's illegal rules-wise).

You got a tactical squad(chainsword sergeant, flamer, and missile launcher)

And then you 10 Genestealers and 10 Termagants, and a bunch of spore mines. You got a cool lander and some tyranid junk though.

Got my two boxes this morning and is still in awe of the detail even if I have seen it online before.

Will paint a chaos chosen and cultist tomorrow to see if I am going for Word Bearers.

I got mine on Saturday and am literally amazed at the quality of the stuff in there. Very happy I picked this up as it is reviving my love of 40k. It's a really good set and you could do a lot worse than pick one up.
