I played this silly (awesome) list last weekend at Bayou Battles Indy GT in Houston. There were 82 entries (10 ogres!), and I finished middle of the pack. The tourney placed somewhat high value on comp scores, so this is definitely not the hardest of the Texas GT's. An ogre player running 2x4 units of mournfangs and 2 stonehorns won 1st overall. I must admit that I have played very little over the past year and the only reason I got motivated for this tourney was because we celebrated my best buddy's bachelor party over the course of the weekend. Awesome right?!?! Needless to say, I came up with this list about an hour before lists were due.
My silly (awesome) list:
Slaughtermaster, Lvl 4, Gut Magic, Greedy Fist, Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales
BSB, Heavy armor, Lookout Gnoblar, Sword of Striking, Talisman of Endurance, Enchanted Shield
Now to the fun part!
6 Ironguts, Full Command, Standard of Discipline
6 Bulls, Full Command
6 Bulls, Champion
6 Bulls, Champion
6 Bulls, Champion
6 Bulls, Champion
4 Leadbelchers
4 Leadbelchers
89 Gnoblars, Trappers <---definitely the funnest part
so that totaled up to 46 ogres, and like 240 wounds.
Game 1: Bretonnians
I played an all knight bretonian list with the fay enchantress. He got first turn and moved most everyone forward - including the fey enchantress OOPS! She got some spells off me and killed some stuff, but i still had more ogres. In the bottom of my turn 1, I charge the fey enchantress with 4 different ogre units, all needing charge rolls of 9-11. Heck, one of em should make it right!? One does. she pops. that same ogre unit overruns like 10" more into a unit of archers guarding the trebs. they made it all the way into his deployment zone turn 1. for good measure i swing a unit of leadbelchers around to face 5 peg knights that had flown over to one of my flanks. Good rolls, killed 2, they panicked off the board. The rest of the game was a pretty sad game of ogres chopping unsupported knights to shreds, while the gnoblars held up his biggest bus of knights the whole game. I won very easily and was off to game 2.
Game 2: High Elves
This dude had a new fangled high elf list that I now know is all the rage. 4 light mages and 2 shots at banishment each turn.
He had:
archmage, lvl 4 light, loremasters cloak
mage, lvl 2 light, seerstaff of sorcery (lets him choose his spells : banishment)
mage, lvl 1 light, scroll
bsb, 45 pt item that makes him a light mage, charmed shield
35 archers
20 seaguard
14 swordmasters
14 swordmasters
14 white lions
5 silver helms
5 reavers
3 eagles
I at first looked at this list and thought the dude had 0 chance vs me. This turned out to be the closest game of the tourney for me. My big mistake was deploying both my general and BSB in the same Ironguts unit. I realized later that in order to make this army work, I must maintain 2 leadership bubbles. My ironguts with the General and BSB were to the right of my gnoblars, which meant i had 2 units of ogres on my left side that were out of the bubble. These 2 units each panicked twice during the game and never made it to combat.
The guy I played was a really good player and used some pretty unique deployment/movement shenanigans that I had never come up against anymore. With his 3 units of 14 elite infantry, he deployed them all centrally and at one point had them all bunched in front of one another. His plan was to just slow my ogres down as best he could, while the mages unleashed nastiness on me. His white lions were first in line, they chopped up some ogres, i chopped them up back, and then he held on steadfast, next turn i kill them off and sit there to be chopped next turn by some swordmasters. rinse repeat rinse repeat. on the left side, his spells/ shooting killed 1 unit completely, and had kept the other 2 in constant panic mode. Soon it was turn 5 and the dang game was pretty dog gone close, when my slaughtermaster miscast on 3 dice and was sucked into the warp. meh. my gnoblars then broke from their combat when steadfast only meant Ld 5 and i was hosed by like 300 pts. meh
Game 3: Demons
another crazy game. the dude took:
great unclean one
40 demonettes with herald
25 horrors with 2 heralds - 1 w/ loremaster shadow, 1 w/ loremster life
2 x 4 fiends
3 flamers
maybe some other crap that didnt matter
once again, i thought this looked too easy, but this last has some dirty tricks. Twice he restored 6-7 wounds on his fiends unit after they had been beaten down seriously.
I realized that the unit of horrors was where his lasers was at, so i set up to make them priority 1. This guy also outplayed me as had the dude in the game previously. He kept the horrors from danger up until turn 4 when i got them completely surrounded and blocked off with a huge combat that had been going on for 3 turns between demonettes and gnoblaars. after i got him surrounded, his demonettes handed the curtains to my gnoblars, by killing like 70 over 3 turns. They lost their steadfast and broke, opening a hole for the horrors to escape, and I never saw it coming. They charge thru the empty spot into a unit of leadbelchers and evade my 3 ogre units coming to kill them. I decided to lock up the great unclean one with my slaughtermaster right in the middle of the battlefield, thinking i could keep my dude safely in the middle of everything with his ld bubble, and could hack some wizard levels off the great unclean one - except i forgot to hack the levels off!!! He got off the miasma spell from the demon nurgle lore that casts on a 3 and reduces all of my stats to 1! he of course kills me and i just found a way to lose the game! meh 1-2 after first day.
Game 4: Vampire Counts
I played Pat who we had met the day before and was a super cool dude. i was looking forward to a really good game.
He took:
Lvl 3 vamp lord with vampire lore
lvl 2 vamp with shadow
lvl 1 necro or whatever it is
10 black knights
5 blood knights
50 skellies
5 wight knight dudes
30 zombies
30 zombies
3x5 wolves
terrorgheist
scenario was 3 objectives (womens) spaced across the middle of the board. you had to pick one of them to be "the lady of your dreams" and she was worth 3 pts to you while the others were each worth 1. there were no other victory points in this scenario. Once you hold an objective, you can only move 4" unless making a charge move. i was thinking "this is great!"
I get turn 1 and take all 3 objectives immediately. 12" march ftw! he cant do anything about it and then i let the charges fly on turn 2. i get my right ogres with the objective into the skellies and another unit marched up to their flank to protect from counter charge. My left ogres charge a unit of zombies and get protection from more ogres on their flank. gnobs move up to start annoying the knights. my ogres on the right fend off the terrorgheist with some leadbelcher support for the rest of the game and keep their objective. YAY!
My dudes on the left finally end up in combat with the blood knights and get them all the way down to 2 dudes left and i feel like im gonna hold this objective too and he is going to have no chance! my gnoblars in the middle were able to lock up in the middle of the board with his nasty black knights and keep them busy forever - but the stupid objective was held by my gnoblars and was being contested in this combat when the game finally ended. its hard to break 90 gnoblars!
Back to the fight on my left with 2 ogre blocks and one dumb unit of 2 blood knights. i decide to not wound anyone this combat and he scores a couple. he wins combat and my dudes run off. He promptly walks away with the objective. I try to get more ogres over toward them but am incessantly redirected by the impossible wight knights. dang that not rolling for bonecrusher! anyway i was completely shocked that i had given away yet another game as he had marked the objective he held as his 3 point objective and i had not.
game 5: dwarves
I played a really nice lady from arkansas named Erin who brought the dwarf list that I comped the hardest.
runelord
thane general
thane bsb
40 hammerers
40 GW warriors
30 quarrelers with GW
2 cannons
1 hellblaster thing
1 grudgethrower
she gets turn 1 and kills a few ogres. i march forward
turn 2 she kills some more. she had messed up her deployment and movement phase which left me with a single charge lane to a cannon - and her backfield. I make the charge and she realizes she is in trouble.
her turn 3 she kills a whole unit of leadbelchers with the quarrelers alone which hurt! I triple charged the quarrelers this turn and got my gnoblars into the warriors face, giving them no choice but to lock up. I killed the quarrelers and reformed to take on the hammerers or warriors locked with the gnobs. I dance around the hammerers, not wanting to engage them yet. her turns were funny from turn 4 on because they were combat only. those dang dwarves were tough. i killed em and killed em until i had kill the entire unit of warriors and there were only 10 hero-less hammerers left. i almost tabled them, but not quite and I came away with a win.
So i finished 2-3, with 3 losses that were purely my bad generalship. MSU ogres is legit guys.
