Belchfist's Warriors of Chaos

original thread ↗

Hey!

So it's been nearly two years since I last assembled and painted a miniature. This was due to many reasons; university, moving home and losing all my gaming stuff, not knowing anyone who took part in the hobby near me  and many other life commitments. However I have now begun to make the small steps back towards full participation in the hobby. During my time out I always kept up with the hobby and the new army books etc. but never bought anything new.

For those of you who didn't follow my blogs over two years ago (probably most of you nowadays) I ran a near 5,000 point Ogre Kingdoms army, 2k of daemons and around 3.5k of warriors of chaos. I dabbled all over the range as painting and converting single miniatures was what inspires me most.

This brings me to an important point - the entire painting range has changed! This not only made choosing which paint colours I required quite complex but will also require me to learn to use the new layering system they have brout in. Exciting!

SO

I decided to head back to my Warriors of Chaos army due to them being slightly more forgiving painting-wise than daemons and much less complete than my ogres. I decided to delve straight in with two single miniatures rather than units as that waif they stood out (due to experimenting with the paints etc) it wouldn't be too big a deal! I was essentially starting from the beginning with what modelling equipment I had and since yesterday I know of a few extras that I definitely need to pick up in the next few weeks!

So on my return trip to GW I bought:

Chaos Nurgle Lord (bloated fat one)
Khorne Lord on foot

Black Primer Spray
Craft knife
Thin Super Glue
Small Drybrush
Small layer brush
Small fine detail brush
Selection of 12 paints

I plan to add a unit of warriors to both of these polite gentlemen just so that they don't get lonely. My primary Chaos God was always Slaanesh so I'm trying something different until I can get hold of my other stuff from home.

My first impression of Finecast is great by the way - loving the extra detail/hate the extra work it requires...has made me realise that clippers, file and green stuff need to be purchased on my next trip!

The washes...incredibly interesting...will enjoy testing them!

Ok, here's some wip of the Nurgle Lord on foot. Long way to go but should give you an idea of where I'm headed!

It's a WiP and I will get better pics when it's finished. I have subsequently added much more highlights/layers to the sores/cuts and changed up the skin etc and the armour...

Anyway enough excuses! It's an indication of things to come...

Here's a little update ...most of the model has been added to since you last saw it, but still haven't had a chance to get to a store to pick up paints for browns/bone! So they remain black at the moment.

Here it is:

On another note I will be using the 'Rocky' bases for my character models that I will buy from Scibor miniatures - I have had great dealings with them in the past and the quality is unsurpassed. Here're the bases:

http://sciborminiatures.com/en_,shop.php?art=642

For my units however a cheaper version will be required to save money. For this. Have decided to try out a little company called back2base-ix online and have opted for their 'Slate' bases. They are very similar minus a few skull details here and there compared to the Scibor selection but I hope that will subtlely make the characters stand out in a not too obvious fashion whilst saving money on the bases for my units. Here are the slate bases:

He will remain unbased until they arrive!

Update!

So I went to GW to pick up the final paints I needed for lord of Nurgle... And ended up buying THIS:

Also, wasn't happy with either head for the Khorne Lord so chopped a bit off to get the result I wanted. Any ideas what this part could be used for?

Here is the Khorne Lord assembled and primed:

And my nearly finished Lord of Nurgle is ready to be shown to the world! Bases still haven't arrived and the lighting and photography make it look terrible. All bone will receive further stages:

Despite the absence of replies I'm hoping people re enjoying following my progress anyhow. I will keep my promise of making the gnoblog pic heavy, at every stage of modelling!

Here is the Sorceror Lord of Tzeentch assembled:

Due to my plan to place my models on separate bases I am buying from elsewhere, I had to cut the toes of the Sorceror Lord (that were made as part of the base - ridiculous) and attempt to stick them to the feet of the model! Fiddly business!

Here is the Lord of Khorne having had one coat of red and a red wash to darken it:

It is my first attempt ever at painting block red so I'm intrigued to see where I can take it.

So my current plan of action for the army is to assemble and paint:

Lord of Khorne on foot
Lord of Nurgle on foot
Sorceror Lord of Tzentch on foot

Then add a unit of 12 warriors for each of these gentlemen so that I can field them appropriately. I literally couldn't care less about how effective they are in the field I just want them to be fluffy, playable and look good.

If I don't have time to paint 12 warriors when these three are done, I may buy a Lord on mount and test my skills on that bad boy!

So Lord of Khorne is coming along nicely! About halfway to being done. I'm finding myself going with the distinctive fantasy style that GW seems to have developed since I last picked up a brush - that crisp almost cartoony fantasy. This mean defined dark edges between colours etc. I like it at the moment but I'm still getting used to the paints so let's see!

I'm finding red to be quite forgiving to paint with so my first unit of warriors may actually be of the Khornate variety despite that going against my Slaaneshi roots! We will see...

Good stuff! The skin on the Nurgle Lord looks a little too clean for my taste (aside from the oozing yellow sections of course), but other than that everything looks great! Especially like the armor effect on him, and I'm frankly amazed at how much better the Khorne Lord looks without his headdress.
Thanks or the comments Noisy Assassin.

I am used to Slaanesh warriors so the 'disgustingness' of the flesh may well be slightly underdone you're right. Jut a note; the yellow is actually glaze and slightly more transparent in real life which makes it look like oozing pus. But still...I agree with you!

And yes Lord of Khorne without a silly hat - YAY!

Main question to you all:

What should I use as a Lord of Slaanesh figure? I dot want a generic Lord to represent him/her. I don't mind alternative model systems if they're appropriate - or is Sigvald the Magnificent worth looking at?

Hmm, well I'm rather partial to the generic Slaanesh Lord on foot. I like it better than the Sigvald model. Other than that, I know I've seen some really cool models for Slaaneshi Lords, but can't remember where... One option if you don't mind ramping up the mutating influence of Chaos would be to use the snake-bodied Dark Eldar thing (called a Slytth apparently) as a base model, then add an appropriate head and arms. Here is a random picture of it from a different forum:

Could also maybe use this model from Freebooter Miniatures

Both of these would look a little more Daemon than mortal though...
Who returns?  :P

I like the succubus for a slaanesh lord.
There are other manufacturers though, look at Battlefield-berlin, maelstrom or other maybe even coolminiornot.
I wanted to start a warriors of chaos all female army, and actually never got beyond lords as the models are or expensive or "your mama" jokes became the truth

Thank you both for your suggestions. Have looked at all the options that have come up so far and nothing has grabbed my imagination yet. Will keep it churning!

In the meantime however I once again entered my local GW today and look what I bought:

So I've finally got an army list I can work towards. I also bought my first box of Chaos Warriors to start adding some rank and file to my 3 characters!

Built, prepped, primed and begun painting on 4 of them. They will have the mark of Nurgle and currently look like this:

I am hoping to freehand paint a design/artwork on each individual shield which I have shaved down to be flat:

Any ideas from you guys about what would look cool on these? Thought it was a great idea but didn't actually have the idea if that makes sense! So I you coul help out that would e great.

Last but not least here is a (terrible) pic of my Sorceror Lord of Tzeentch in his current state (just started!)

LOVE the shields.
The idea, the painting, great.

Normally I would say: great job overall, but you're good enough to take some extra critique.
The highlights on the boots annoy me.
I don't know if it's the glare of the picture or the colour difference.
The strange thing is that it doesn't bother me on the belt.

I actually agree with you. It's missing a middle colour brown, and that's due to me having not picked one up when starting off again with the hobby a week and a bit ago. It was bothering me in the background but you have spurred me on to fix it!!! Will be buying a few more paints today and the right shade of brown will be one of them to fix the boots, some files an some saying varnish I think to protect these bad boys from battle damage!

I have an idea for the fourth shield now, but am busy with real life thing this evening so won't get round to it until tomorrow but it's coming soon, don't fret! :)

While I love your painting style and you are obviously talented, it just doesn't *feel* nurgley...

The warriors are far too clean!
My gnoblog - Heavy Metal Ogres

if you don't like what you see here, get the FUNK out!
Whilst I hate to criticise in anyway - constructive or not - I think I agree with Tarantulus. They look a little to crisp and clean for Papa Nurgle's minions... No rust, no plague or disease.

Nonetheless mate, seeing four of them completed, and ranked up is really pretty awesome! Your technical painting ability is fantastic.

I can't wait for the next update, and I hope work is too tedious in the meantime :)

Gentlemen you are both right of course. They are lacking the repulsive growths, distended maws and general disease of a classic Nurgle batch. However, this is not simply overlooking on my part.

Firstly those things are not visible on the models and this being a painting step one rather than a sculpting step one I chose to leave them relatively untouched. As far as rust etc goes, perhaps not visible in the photos but all of the metal has had numerous brown green and yellow washes so in life looks suitably 'Nurgley'. The armour is relatively clean indeed - but my thought was that they do indeed have a mark of Nurgle and worship their flabby God wholly, they are not Chosen and as the scale goes: Marauder, Warrior, Chosen, Exalted, Lord, Daemon Prince. They could remain fairly 'fresh' in their devotion. I understand this may not be to everyone's taste and suggestions for rot/rust + examples would be much appreciated though I'm not sure they'll make it onto the models just yet! :)

Hope that explains their slight lack of putrid grossness!

Mini update -

Building had commenced on the next four Wariors which I impulsively decided would contain the command group. Slow going so far as I have no time. However: GW FILES ARE RUBBISH. It's actually easier to get rid of the flash with a Hobby knife and the flat square shape of the boards doesn't allow acces into small areas. Useless purchase ad I'm annoyed!

Very similar to my standard bases (which are a little cheaper from back-2-basix), they will be the bases for my character models. They are much much enter quality of casting and sculpting. The best thing was that with them they sent me these fun sculpts for FREE as a gift with purchase!!

So on Saturday I have my first game of Warhammer with the new rules! I feel it's going to be a steep learning curve as I only vaguely remember the old ones! Any pointers on the main differences?

Using the models I have recently bought and assembled we will be playing a small game probably using this army list:

Exalted Hero of Nurgle
Sorceror of Tzeentch
12 Warriors of Nurgle
12 Warriors of Slaanesh

Just a small match up followed probably by a giant mega battle of death with all of our old models (6k of ogres, 5k of Empire, 3k Beasts, 2k warriors, 3k daemons and around 600pts of lizzies) that should be one heck of a battle!

In the small match up I will be facing a small force of lizard men. No skinks, two blocks and a hero on carnosaur. Any tips on how to equip the Nurgle fella?

Just-Josh for 5 bases, €4.60 for 25mm without delivery. Well worth it for the quality especially for characters. Reckon I'll try and do the whole bunch with bases from either there or back-2-basix

Construction o final 4 warriors for this unit has taken place (minus shield arms obviously) and painting on the second lot of four featuring command is about halfway through. I think the skintone you've achieved on that second from last picture is awesome! The slightly warmer feel, perhaps through the base colouring, really suits the Nurgle ethos.

I also like the more Nurgle-y conversion... ;)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Thanks JJ it's a slightly darker variation of the skint one of the Lord of Nurgke I poste earlier in the blog. This is the unit as it stands:

I'm quite interested in buying the pack of 3 snap together warriors to geth the desired 15 warriors in my unit. £6 for 3 models and I get the right amount! The only negative is I'd have to order it online...and pick it up from a post office miles away as I don't have a working doorbell and am working a lot! Thoughts?

Can any hobby smart Alec's tell me what toe gold mine I just found untouched in my dusty old hobby cupboard?

:D

On another note, I'm looking to acquire about 12 halberds from the Tomb Guard sprue. I'm expecting to pay for them. I want them for a Tzeentch warrior unit as I think they would be awesome. REALLY need your help finding these, if any of you hobby geniuses out there have any spare please let me know!

If you have bought any chaos knights kits, you could use the lances from them, they look sweet as halberds, or you could buy a pack of ten metal halberds from gw. But if your sold on the TG halberds try looking around on bitz sites

EDIT: had a quick look myself, found some single ones, but out of stock ATM

Thanks for the help with the halberd search. I specifically want the halberds to look Egyptian to fit with the Tzeentch warriors which is why I settled for the tomb kings but I do have another idea in mind of that proves unsuccessful...

Well done JJ - that is indeed Harry the Hammer! Should make quite a nice Undivided Lord if I can be bothered to deal with a metal model in the near future!

Update:
Have nearly finished the Nurgle unit (not the shields, just the models) but should be able to finish them on Tuesday and get you lovely people some pics!!! :)

Really digging the Warrior unit. The clean painting style is growing on me the more I look at it. As for the halberds, it looks like hoade-o-bits has one set left in stock. A bit pricey, but whatcha gonna do?

http://hoardobits.com/ (apparently navigating their site doesn't change the url...just go to Warhammer, Tomb Kings and they should be easy to find).

Otherwise try to find a TK player who uses HW and Shield.

Thank you for the link I will probably be buying those tomorrow!!

JJ - having looked at the model up close I've remembered how much I too hate metal models!

In other news, rather than have an army list that I am working towards, I have an idea of what I want the army I'm building to look like. I.e. the models I want to own - this is the checklist:

Undivided Lord on horse
Khorne Lord on Juggernaut
Lord of Chaos Undivided
Lord of Khorne
Lord/Sorceror of Tzeentch
Lord of Nurgle
Lord of Slaanesh
Sorceror (undivided)
Warriors of Khorne
Warriors of Nurgle
Warriors of Slaanesh
Warriors of Tzeentch
Marauders
Marauders
10 war hounds
10 chosen
10 Knights of Chaos
10 Marauder horsemen
2 war shrines
2 hellcannons

Yeah, metal was never my favourite medium to work with... It can be a right pain to put together, and the mould lines are enough to drive someone insane.

Also, had much thought about wanting the three spare warriors?

The list looks fairly awesome, and would definitely be both a decent gaming army and a very nice collector's army. I am curious though, what are your plans for building the Warshrines? :)

Here is an update for the unit of Nurgle warriors. Having played a few games with them I will be running them 6 wide. Here they are FINISHED (except for the shields and banner):

And here are three of the upcoming shields that are nearly done:

And last but not least here is a small teaser of the battle I played over the weekend. It was a 2,000 list I played made just for fun using whatever models I could borrow/proxy to show a new friend of ours the hobby and how to play a game.

It was great and turned out that I won with aasaacre due to some lucky Tzeentch magic!

Nice work.
"Nec sorte nec fato"
Thank Jimmy!

Today I decided to move my hobby making out of first gear and into second! So I decided to buy THIS:

Yes, that is a Battalion of Chaos box. With Fantasy now being a mainly troop choice game I figure this box has it all. I understand there to be a new rule book for the warriors towards the end of this year and I figure they might change the box a little at that time so I thought I'd get it while it's good!!

I had an hour or two spare after purchase too, so I started preparing and building year bad boys:

Have built five with horns and used green stuff to fill in the holes on the other five for variety. They will be mixed together if I split them into two units.
Excited to get stuck in in any spare time this week!! :D

I'm quite excited about their uselessness actually. It may prove to be particularly useful! As models, I think they're great too, fairly diverse but they did need quite a bit of prep work on those mould lines and gaps. Worth it in the end hopefully! :)

I think I may start the warriors next which will be the unit of 18 :D if not, the knights may get a nice quick build! :)

Well, if nothing else they are great screeners and speed bumps. The models are by far the best canine-like models GW have made! Like all plastics though, the mould lines are irritating.

The Knights are truly beautiful models, and I don't ever tire of building them. The decision lies in their armament though :)

Some parts of the heads are more marine than warrior. But I intend to be correcting that when they arrive ;) I've spent quite a lot of time scouring various websites now finding different bits and bobs.

Update: Warhouns are about halfway done, (not bases) and have dark black/grey flesh and dark brown fur for that classic werewolf look!

It's always worthwhile, spending that extra time looking for the perfect components. It really shows in the finished product :) I definitely think that your army will be one of the best Warriors armies I've seen to date, simply through the sheer amount of time and effort you've spent on it.

Have found some other heads on that website that I believe may also make it into my warriors of Tzeentch unit. Now the only question is what to do about their shields!! Any suggestions? I'm leanin towards slightly modifying the tomb guard set...

I have nearly finished the warhounds of chaos!!! Individually painting every single hair on these bad boys was painful but worth it I reckon. The light is bad and the paint isn't dry yet but here is a sneak peak:

THIS IS A BAD PICTURE!!

The bases have yet to arrive (I only ordered them on Monday). There'll be bases galore when they do as it'll be bases for the entire battalion! I've stuck with back-2-base-ix for te infantry sized bases and Scibor miniatures for the extra detail on the cavalry size. Will be worth the cost as they are beautiful just by themselves!

I still need to decide how to make the marauders less rubbish model wise...

Until next time!

Using heads from the horsemen box and greenstuff fur (easy to make) will make the marauders look pretty decent if you go that route - and adding the axe head to the flail shaft will make them more menacing as great weapon wielders.

Just a thought.
My hood is my castle...
In regards to fielding Marauders, are you sold on definitely using GW's versions?

Ah, okay. Well, I guess the best equipment is the Flail, as they aren't survivable enough for any other kit. The Marauder models are truly shocking, but can be made slightly more sufferable with the addition of spare components from the Maurader Horsemen kit, and perhaps even a few Space Wolves heads and what not.

In my previous experience of the WoC army, the only thing that makes Marauders worth taking is Wulfrik the Wanderer, and the special deployment rule he bestows a unit of them...

My infantry bases arrived from back-2-base-ix.com today. I was very excited and then opened the package to discover that they have sent me ROUND bases despite me clearly ordering square ones. I couldn't be more annoyed, they are in an entirely different section of the website so how these errors occur I don't know but I'm more concerned about how they handle this. Scibor miniatures made an error some years ago and corrected it immediately and were very generous. I will update you as it happens...

I am home and am once again enthused with wonderful hobby goodness due to the Warriors of Chaos book being released in my absence. On the whole I think it's fantastic after a brief read. So it begins. Here are WIP builds of my 12 warriors of Tzeentch. They will be part of a unit of 24 to give me options of fielding them in different numbers. The heads are from max mini and a combination of two different styles - I will be using tomb guard halberds as they seem Tzeentch-y after a lot of scouring the web, and am yet to decide on shields (probably flattened chaos warrior shields).

I've just bought the new rule book and I still think warriors of Tzeentch with shields are a great stalwart warrior choice. The halberds in the model will be being used as hand weapons most of the time I'm thinking!

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Apologies for another post without a pic, but as no painting has taken place the pics are all a bit too grey at the moment!

12 warrior bodies and heads assembled (with Tzeentch heads)
12 shields filed down flat (that is booooring!)
4 marauders of Khorne built but not based (with Khorne heads - wonderful!)

On the way in the post -
12 warriors of chaos (to make a unit of 24 Tzeentch warriors)
1 shiny new chaos lord to be decided about upon arrival
30 tomb guard halberds to be the Tzeentch warrior weapons. This unit is THEMED! :)

So the only question that remains is how many warriors should I make for the single unit?
Is it worth making a full 30 by buying some snap fits? Or perhaps 29 and always place a character in the unit to make a horde? And is a horde of warriors even worth it? But that would give me the option of two units of 15....

Thoughts?

See, I always think a horde is worth it. Especially with units like Warriors. And, with 30, like you have already said, it gives you the option to break it down into two smaller units.

I would probably go for the 29 plus character, but for the sake of one extra warrior, I guess it wouldn't make too much difference :)

So is it best to buy another box, just for the 6 warriors to make up 30 warriors of Tzeentch - and have 6 left over for use in another unit (perhaps the Khorne unit I've been thinking of turned into a unit of 18) or buy two snap fit boxes of 3 warriors.

Hmm

Good question... It will probably happen on all my units if I have the persistence to see it through!
A. I think it looks cool
B. it's a blank canvas for painting
C. It allows each warrior to be more individual than their plastics allow

Hopefully...

I'll have to invest in another box then...even though buying this second one is already hurting me deeply!

In the meantime - a sneak peak!!! Started a test model for the paint scheme on the Tzeentch warriors...
Most of the silver will be brass/gold eventually. This is nowhere near complete!! Quite pleased with the blue colour - very different for me...

I like the blue of the armor as well, but I can't help but think "Space Marine of the Fantasy Era" when I see it. Just a random note ;) I know that it's not nearly finished, so I'll keep watching and seeing what turns up!

BTW I really like all I've seen so far on this gnoblog! Well done!
24 Gnobs! Wow, 2 sets, crazy!
Toothy, Workie, Sir Reginald, and Busty (for the bus explanation)!

43/101 Achievements earned! Woo! Got some of the tricky ones!

New book WLD: 17/8/2 ... A good quick game to get me re-invigorated, glad it was a win either way lol

Thanks both! Appreciate the comments!

JJ - the helmets really are great and each one is different too.

Sazel - I agree, thankfully the thousand sons were sort of the idea I have in my head whenever I think of Tzeentch so that where I'm headed I assume! The shield will help I assume...

On another note - after playing with the rule book and WoC for a while how about this for a Lord of Tzeentch (not Sorceror)

Chaos Lord
Mark of Tzeentch
Gifts of Chaos
- Acid Ichor
- Third Eye of Tzeentch
- Scaly Skin
- Soul Feeder
Magic items
- Enchanted shield
- Obsidian Blade
- Talisman of Preservation

He will be in a unit with the Blasted standard to halve S of incoming fire.
He is practically un-killable.
Chaos armour, enchanted shield and scaly skin combine to make a 0+ AS
Talisman of Preservation gives 4+ ward improved my MoT to 3+
Third eye of Tzeentch allows him to re-roll ward saves of 1
Acid Ichor should punish anyone who manages to inflict a wound
And soul feeder will pull it right back when he mauls them to death as the have no AS due to the obsidian blade.

Quite the tank!

I will be counting on his epic statline to inflict the damage and perhaps a Khorne hero to dish out some extra attacks in a unit of Khorne boys!

Thoughts? Improvements?

I think that's a brilliant build! I mean, he is gonna be great at tanking out a result, and really grinding a combat.

The thing with the new book, is it just too easy to make a solid character build. I have a million builds I have gotta try out, and I like them all, so it's tough choosing.

Two good runners up to your build, if you try yours but want to try something else also:

1) Chaos Lord with Mark of Nurgle, Fencer's Blades, Glittering Scales, Soul Feeder. 300 points total for six S5 attacks, that is hit back ONLY on a 6 by (pretty much) everything in the game.

2) MoTz, Stubborn Crown, Talisman of Preservation, Daemonic Steed (or Disk), Great Weapon, Scaly Skin, Dragon Helm, Third Eye, and maybe Soulstealer. Dude rocks a 3++ (2++ vs flaming) rerolling ones, if you even get past his 1+ armor.  He dumps five S7 attacks and two S5 magical attacks as well as Stomp each turn, and he is movement 8 Swiftstride while being stubborn.

The first choice is a budget Lord choice, which could still allow you to fit a Level 4 in the same list. The second is a maxed out Lord choice, but can be seriously evil, ruining a lot of armies locally at the moment.

So the trial paint run is going well... Update:

So there it is! The blue will receive one lighter highlight when I get a chance to get to a store to buy a suitable blue (would mix but will be doing 30 models!) everything else I'm fairly happy with considering it's a just a core troop. Painting has been very quick on the whole. Shields will look better when every warrior has the same design I feel too :)

JJ - I've had a look at that build. Looks great - but I need a lord on foot to join the 30 man horde of Tzeentch. So the stubborn crown is less necessary I feel! What do you think?

So really it's the choice of Obsidian Blade or something else....I will be facing empire or lizard men mostly. But if I'm honest I actually haven't played a game of Warhammer in 8th ed yet! I know it's shocking. I don't have a complete army with me in London or space to house one and my usual gamer buddy is in Nottingham so I'm pretty game free!!! Any takers? Anyone want to help me get up to speed?

My point is - I have lots of character models on foot because I love to paint them and I really hate painting horses. But what is the value of character models on foot vs mounted/flying nowadays?

Have nearly finished a second warrior. Pics to follow ASAP!

If I were closer to London, I would definitely offer to play a few games matey :) In all honesty, I have almost all of my characters on foot in 8th, to take protection from being in a unit. The only time I don't is if I have a solo character with fly (Liche Priest with Cloak of Dunes, Chaos Sorcerer on Disc etc) so they are less likely to get picked off from being outside of a unit, or characters on mounts who can go in a cavalry bus (Vampire Lord in Black Knight bus, Chaos Lord in Knight bus etc)

I like on foot models, but sometimes the bonus of a mount is too good to pass up... the extra armour save and manoeuvrability is too good to pass up :)

Turns out painting these guys is great fun and I'm doing them very quickly for me so they forego the usual 50 hour treatment they'd normally get - but I'm still happy with them. This chap has a way to go yet but he'll be done soon (ever colour is unfinished)

After this I start batch painting 5 and 5 to get the first 12 done ASAP while I wait for the other 12 to arrive. I'll also get all the shield done (hopefully!) and then move on to finishing those 5 knights I started. I've made a painting pledge and intend to stick to it!
At some point I need to start painting all the wonderful back2baseix bases I have for them too! Busy busy!

JJ - I see. Well, stuff it. No idea how it'll play but seeing as I don't play that often I don't care yet about the validity quite yet! Only that they look too cool for school ;)

Also - any takers on a game in London somewhere soon?

Yo Belch,
Loving the eqyptian theme and the hand painted shields! The blue, brown and bleached bone color scheme also looks really mint. I'm glad batch painting is working out for you cos I hate slaving away over one model even though they always look cool the time it takes is loooong!

As I'm sure you'll notice it isn't the full points.

I have no idea about the new magic Korea or use of wizards in 8th so help me out with those and kitting them out!!

Most of the list is formed from models I already have or intend to add because they're cool (dragon ogres) but it's in no way set in stone. Would love any help!

TLK - I say batch painting. It still takes forever. I basecoat everything and then wash some things. Highlight. (Another wash here on blue and gold) and final highlight layers (possibly two). But the tonal spine-breaker is the fur on their backs. It takes forever to paint each piece!!! I'm hoping the Egyptian halberd type weapons will rock these guys look even more. Add some extra gold!!

Other than the Knights, I like the list. I don't think 5 knights is enough. One casualty and you could be in serious trouble... I would either bump the unit up in size, or drop them and add to the Dragon Ogre unit :)

As for the kit on the wizards, I think the kit is fine, although I would probably try and squeeze a Dispel Scroll in, with the current magic meta :)

Haven't used any of the items allowance for the sorcerer on war shrine. So scroll for him? Is the war shrine viable?

And I know about the knights...but I've had them for about a year and I really don't think I can paint another 5 haha! They'll look cool anyway.

Do the knights and dragon ogres full the same gaming purpose?

The scroll on the war shine guy sounds fine. The war shrine is certainly viable in it uses, but can just sometimes be a little ponderous, maybe being a challenge to keep alive. That said, it's a great model, and the benefits it gives are without question.

The Dragon Ogres and Knights will fill pretty much the same role. They are both hammer units, to crash into whatever unit you choose. I would just try and bulk the Knights up, even if it is putting a vanilla hero in there. It will just give them some extra survivability and punch.

Also, what are you going to do with the remaining points? :)

My freehand is returning and it was fun to try it out on something so small.

I'll probably use it as the familiar for my sorcerer. This the round base. Think I'd be better off with a square bad just in case? Or does the round base denote that he's a familiar etc not really part of the game..?

And an update - final touches on the shield. They'll look great when they're all like this but I'm thinking it's no longer a quick paint unit!!

I love the Warrior, he is superb! I really like the shield, and think you've achieved a real crispness :) I am going to be 100% honest, and say that the skin on the Familiar is a little flat. Not sure if it is the photo, but it looks as though it is the basecoat, and is waiting for some depth :)

Not being critical though, cause I think your paint work is sublime, and well above anything I could dream of doing :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
Beautiful, the shaved shields really turned out nice and the whole egyptian theme is brilliant!
Thanks for the comments, all help me to keep motivated.

That photo is in terrible light of the familiar JJ, but looking at the pic you're right it looks flat. Will have a closer look at the actual model later and add depth if required!
In the meantime I have painted a bass for the little guy (clearly I got carried away with him)

It's meant to be like he is channelling his wizard in power from the magic in the ground or even that he was summoned onto that point. Either way the blue magma type stuff is to represent magic and looks cool IRL!!

Why thank you JJ! :) I appreciate that!

In the meantime...been updating my chaos sorcerer to match my warriors (he was basecoated in various colours), and got a bit carried away with my newfound love for freehand on his weapon. Quite pleased with the results! Much higher painting standard than I used to achieve when I was a mere teen...perhaps with age comes a steady hand...!!!

That staff looks awesome! Nice job!

(And if age gave skill I'd be the most amazing painter in the world! LOL)

Thanks to all for the comments.

The Sorcerer Lord is nearly finished!

I've spent a little more time on highlights for this fella, and even tried a little OSL for the very first time!! I was a bit of a scaredy cat about it but I think it's come off quite well.

Here are a few pics!

So the other 5 members of the unit are done bar their weapons and bases... I'm slightly regretting the fact that they now take so long with all the freehand but it will be worth it in the end!!!

Whilst an entire army of these fellows wouldn't be feasible, within the time constraints of your average person, this unit is going to look seriously impressive when finished :)

Thanks JJ, unfortunately, my plan is indeed to make an entire army of models this detailed.

I'm getting impatient waiting for my unit box and lord model to be delivered and I have been wanting to find a way to use this model for some time. I think this could make a great alternate sorcerer of Tzeentch model with some conversion! Thoughts?

Yeah, the undergrowth could be sculpted to look more tentacle-like instead of vines or something...also, I love this gnoblog, you're doing an outstanding job, and keep up the great work!!
They call me MR. Cthulhu! AAAAAHHHHHHH!
I would find any excuse to include a Scibor mini in your army, purely because they are a beauty to work with :) I think, with a little poetic licensing and some good fluff, he could be fitted into your army :) Remember the Changer of Ways is as much about creating life (in this case plants, albeit warped and chaotic plants) as it is warping things to destruction... There was once a Tzeentchian WoC character in the fluff called Melekh the Changer, whose footsteps were literally followed by plants springing up where he trod, as as a sign that he and his change had been there :)

Thanks for the encouragement Mr Cthulu!

I remember Melekh JJ! But I've never been a fan of the plant idea. I love the model... I reckon with some careful greenstuffing, those could become flames/warpy tentacles which would be a lot more tzeentchy. The flames would be more Tzeentchy in my eyes but slightly more challenging. I also love the idea of him being summoned from a book. So, like an open book base, and him sprouting up from it in flames... All hypothetical of course!

Also - unit so far:

SO!

halberds converted and primed for those five bad boys so that they can finally be primed.

In other news I went to check the status of my order for warriors and Lord as I thought they'd been a while and it turns out I hadn't ordered them. Fool.
So ordered myself two boxes of warriors and the chaos lord.
The boxes will allow me to make 24 warriors. Of which 18 will be part of the Teentch unit.

Leaving me with 6. And a dilemma. Here are my thoughts - if I make a second command section (3 models) I have the option of fielding two smaller units of Tzeentch warriors (15 each) and have 3 left over to add to my other units to make them up to 15 (currently Nurgle and a primed unit that will be Khorne).

Or option two is to leave the Tzeentch horde well alone not build the extra command, and add 6 models to the Khorne or Nurgle unit to give me the option of an 18 man unit of another god...

I'm stuck!

I wouldn't do the former, because MSU really doesn't work too well for WoC. Not to mention not being overly canon, with hordes making a lot more sense. I definitely think the second option is the better :)

As for the Scibor mini, if you are definitely sold on the fires of Tzeentch and coming out of a book, I would probably go for a different base model :) I will do some digging...

Cheers JJ, will not build a second Tzeentch command then.

Thinking more about it, the book idea was naff and I'm not sure about the model fitting in, especially seeing as I want it to be playable in GW stores preferably.

The race is on to finish my pledge for this month and I have left myself a LOT to do!
I have to finish the halberds for my 5 warriors. Finish painting my five knights, and prep, assemble and greenstuff 20 marauders in 5 days that I'm working!!! Is I possible? Probably not. Will I try? Too right I will!!! :)

Couldn't be more excited...look what just arrived!!! :)

After a little building of The Lord model, I think it's fantastic! Hardly any mould lines and fits together fantastically in a 3D fashion so lacking in some modern models! Happy BB!

So - I absolutely love the Lord model. I'd forgotten why I even started WoC which was to paint single miniatures because I love doing that the most. So this guy really is going to get the full treatment. He is about 15% complete with a lot to do! But you can see the sort of colour scheme I'm going for :)

The base has a similar effect to the familiar:

And here he is WIP:

So I decided to try a few things on him... Still WIP but progress made. His cloak will look like lava hopefully. It's taking forever but it's an ambitious project for me and I'm really happy with my progress so far.

And the benefit is you'll be able to look at it and admire it all game long as he'll always be facing the enemy! (Yeah, right! LOL)
