My ogre army project

Hello im very new to the warhammer universe, i have wanted to play since i was a little kid, but never had the funds to purchase any sort of an army.  I did buy some random chaos dwarves when i was about 13-14 and painted them some but never got any further then having 4 or 5 of em sitting on my table.  Now that i have grown up on the outside but am still that curious kid at the game store inside i decided to buy into the game.  I chose Ogre Kingdoms because they seemed really fun to paint, and i hope play, as of this time i still havent played my first game but have been trying to get some of the rules under my belt.  I currently own the batallion box (6bulls, 6IGs, 4LBs) and a butcher, i know this is not much of an army as it currently stands but im hoping to get some more core and MFC, and sabertusks, and irobblaster, etc...  I really like to paint the models and that is what i have been doing with most of my free time lately, i want my ogres to be looking pretty good when they hit the battlefield.  Here are some pictures of my first 4 ogres that i have painted, you can see some progression in my painting from one model to the next.  Thnx for reading/looking, hope to have some more pics of freshly painted ogres soon.

Thanks a bunch fellow ogres!  Not sure about the bases yet, was thinking about getting some of the GW texture paint, and some dry brush compound and doing some kind of plains covered in snow but where you can still see some of the ground underneath.  Thats just a very early thought though, if anyone has any advice or suggestions i would be more then happy to hear them, as i said im really new to all this and dont know all the techniques and styles that i would like to.  I did buy the 'how to paint citadel models' book and that has been very helpful, was kinda expensive but i think it really cut my learning time by a whole lot.  Also i have been looking at all the awsome posts on the forum here about basing and am trying to take it all in, lol.

As far as bases go you can get a lot done for very little using glueing on sand and rocks, painting them and adding some static grass.
That said for my skaven army I just chose a base colour painted it and stuck on beach sand and static grass. If you decide not to paint the sand like I did though make sure you go back to the same beach to get some. i moved 15km up the road and the sand there was nothing like what i had previously used

That said I'd browse through gnoblogs and look for a base style that catches your eye and work out how to replicate that.

Well i finished my SB for the bulls!  Very excited i feel he turned out pretty well, my first model with eyes and i put a lot of time into the crows nest/standard, also my 1st standard i have ever painted.  If anyone sees how i can improve my painting on the ogre or the standard i would love pointers/criticism (constructive hopefully).  Also i appologize for the quality of the photos my camera is very old and im having a really hard time getting it to capture the actual colour of the models, all seems kinda grey but in real life it is much brighter lol.  Anyways thnx for looking.

Well theres a very small addition to my tribe today...

I know hes just one little gnobblar but i thought he deserved his moment, i was going to glue him inside of the crows nest on the SB but now im thinking of just putting him in w/o glue so i can take him out if i feel like it, to show him off lol, at the same time it seems kinda stupid cause he'll just get all beat up if hes bouncing all over the place in the crows nest.  If anyone has any advice about this silly dillema i have i would be very happy to hear it.
Also wanted to mention that i have been very unhappy with the GW brushes that i bought, all of em besides the standard gw brush that one is pretty awsome, so i looked online for a better one and everyone recomended windsor newton series 7.  I went out today and purchased a 0,1, and 2 windsor newton ser7, and while they were expensive they are truely something else.  Everything i read about them is 100% true they have the best point and leave way less brush strokes and are WAY easier and rewarding to use.  Im still using some of the GW brushes for basecoating larger areas but anywhere theres fine detail i only use W&N now.  I also purchased a princeton 20/0 and that brush is just amazing , its tiny but it holds the paint better then most large brushes and i dont know how i was doing face detail without it before, once i put the paint into the brush its like a pen with the smallest tip you can possibly imagine the possibilities are endless when i can get into the tiniest areas.  So yea i used all those brushes on the gnobby.  Ive only been painting for a little bit but i feel that once you try those brushes you will never go back to the old beat up ones, but thats just my opinion.  Thank you for reading and looking fellow ogres.

Got my crusher done today, think he looks pretty good.  Havent decided what todo with the bases yet so im leaving them blank for now.

Im not realy a fan of the metal (little too colorfull for coremodels). But Im sure U guessed that from cheking my Blog out. Haha!
Still looks amazing and very strong. Plus, U seem to be realy fast painter wich is something I could never do. Lokk foreward to seeing one entire unit.

Hey thanks for your input, i like the metals, but its all a matter of opinion, i like the way you do yours as well.  My camera is pretty lame but heres a few a pics of the finished unit, still need to base them, and wanna do a few things here and there to clean them all up, was thinking of repainting the 1st one i did he really doesnt look as good as the rest of em do imo (hes hiding behind the SB and you really cant see him but hes the 1st pic in the gnoblog), but i have a whole army to paint/assemble and would like to get a few games in at some point lol, so all thats gonna take a backseat to the next unit wich is going to be the IGs, might take a small break in the middle of em and do some mournfangs, and sabretusks so i dont go crazy from painting the same model over and over.  Thanks for looking and your input.

Starting to put the IGs together, and its looking like its gonna be kinda tough to paint them if i glue the arms/great weaps/heads on.  Gonna be near impossible to get to the chest, and more importantly for me the faces of the models with the great weaps right in front of everything, the gutlord shouldnt be a problem because his hands are high up over his head, and the SB as well since he is using a 1 handed weapon, but the other 4 are pretty closed up.  Think im going to glue the bodies to the feet and then to the bases, and just putty the arms and heads on to get primed and base coated, then pull em back off and paint the body of the model, then putty the arms back on and paint them taking them off here and there to get at the tricky spots, same with the head, the weapons ill just paint separate from the model and then glue them in after everything is done.  Thats my plan as of now anyways, if anyone has any suggestions for a better way to do this i would be very happy to hear it. 

I got my sabertusks last night, and decided to take a break form painting fat guys and do one kitty.  Turned out ok imo, could be alot better, but i dont know how to fix it without repainting the whole thing, and im not doing that now.  Honestly dont know why it didnt work out they way i thought it would, kinda 2d and the shading looks weird, idk if its the colour of the paints i used or maybe just my inexperience.  If anyone knows a really good way to paint these guys would be excited to hear it.  I guess it works to play with lol, just being picky...meow meow.

All you really need are stripes, they add a whole new dimension to the otherwise poor sculpted cats.

I think shadowlord has hit it on the head....the better you paint these models, the worse they look as the sculpt is terrible. Stripes will certainly draw the eyes from the shape of the base model.

I usually spend a lot of time per Ogre but when it came to the cats, I even drybrushed some of them. That is something I normally only do with hair, fur, chainmail and the like. They looked crap, even the ones I spent time blending so I decided to add stripes. They do not take long and it looks much better even with a less stellar paintjob and weak sculpt.

Yours look good shadowlord, i saw them on the painting challenge too, i like the way they turned out.  Did you just base coat and wash and then add stripes?  Or did you layer over the wash and then add stripes?  I tried to layer mine and looks like i didnt do anything lol.  Btw the hunter looks awsome!

Here's the newest addition to my tribe, my 1st IG.  Im pretty happy with the way he turned out, was my 1st attempt at rust (its on the handle of the great wep.).  I think i went a little overboard on the rust but it was a learning experience.  I painted him with the weapon and arms glued on but the head and gutstrap off and then glued them on after i was done with the whole paint job.  I was dreading painting around the great weapon but it really wasnt that hard actually cut some time off the layering on the skin, but made up in time painting on the metal armor on the arms, so took about as long as a regular bull would have.  I need to start practicing layering on the pants and boots more, every time ive tried it it never looks good and i just wash over it, but thats the next step i feel like.  Any advice on how my painting can be better is always welcome.  Thank you for looking guys.

Thanks, because of how boring they are to paint (and they are weak sculpts), I painted them, washed, drybrushed, and added some small layering where the brushing looked too obvious. Then I added the stripes and a thin wash at the beginning of the stripes to make them pop a little more (if shoddy paint job can pop).

Thanks Shadowlord, and thanks for the advice on how to paint the kitties.  I will try that method on the next one i do, still havent had time to add the stripes to the first one, but will post pics once i get it done.  Ive been looking at the pics of the greenskins that you have been painting and they look absolutely amazing, gives me inspiration.

Here's my second IG.

I tried to do the whole 'stripes/spots/morethanonecolour' thing with my sabres, but I gave up pretty quickly and went with a monochrome white lion look (dheneb stone base). There's barely any highlighting on the main body itself bar the protruding joints/ribs. I'm actually quite happy with them, and even happier I didn't waste time trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear!

I can't believe I have missed this gnoblog before now... Your work is fantastic! The colours are bold and strong, yet contain subtle highlights and depth. I very much like your gnoblar skintone too! Have a pet gnoblar on me

Hey thanks a bunch!!!  That's my first gnobblar!  Super excited! 
Working on next IG, will post pics when done.  Also just acquired 2 maneaters, the araby and the paymaster.  I cant wait to get to work on them but will hold off until i have my IGs finished, need to get the core built so i can play some games.  Thanks for looking fellow ogres.
