Bolanferth's Great Orc Warband of questionable provenance

original thread ↗

Hello, fellow big boys

Here begins my Gnoblog! Inspired largely by Nightmare's amazing, gritty, mysterious (they seem to be gazing philosophically into the distance) Great Orcs, I have decided to try something similar. However, since I doubt I'll be able to match their classiness, I'm going to try a more straightforward Orc/Goblin style.

Hopefully I can combine the things I love about Ogres (tough combat monsters, big models - great for conversions, small enough armies to stamp your personality across them), and Orcs&Gobbos (fun, plenty of history - visually, millions of bits to convert with).

Also, I'm hoping that this approach will be CHEAP!

GNOBLARS!
I'm not loving the official ones, so I'm thinking of using Night Goblins as Gnoblars (like the Purple Moons on this site), with some unit fillers or other models (maybe the odd squig etc.) to convey the 'dangerous terrain' randomness (and also to maintain the CHEAP theme). Hoping to get some BfSP models on ebay or the Gnoblar market.

I briefly thought of using LOTR stuff - Uruk Hai etc., but I think they're too small. Any thoughts?

SKIN!
However, I am toying with different skin tones (especially if I end up playing OnGs myself - I don't want people complaining that it's confusing) - perhaps blue, or red with white facial hair for eye-catching contrast.

Any suggestions/comments/advice?

KITTIES!
I'm not a big fan of the Sabretusk models either. Currently I'm considering: Chaos Warhounds or Goblin Wolfriders... any other suggestions?

MOUNTS!
I've had little luck with Ebay... and not much luck finding plastic woolly mammoth toys on the web (I'd prefer Rhinox...es? en? I think). Will keep scouring the Gnoblar market and Ebay.

FIRST STEPS
I bought the battalion box set (from Amazon - a toy shop had them at a 30% discount, but they've reverted to GWs prices now. Wish I'd bought more now, like Mournfangs).

I also bought some heads from ebay - Space Ork Nob heads (haha, knobheads) look terrific, and are BIG! Some regular Orc heads are on the way too, for variety.

GREEN STUFF
I have little experience with sculpting, but I'm planning to practise a lot making separate pieces (furs, shoulder armour etc.) and glueing them on. I have a problem with the amount of skin on show with some Ogres - especially human-flesh coloured ones. I can't help being reminded of fat topless guys on the beach.

OK! So hopefully I'll receive my Battalion box soon. With any luck, the next post will have some sketches, pics, dirty poems etc.

Cheers (especially if you read the whole post - well done!)
