The Djiin Eaters Tribe

original thread ↗

Oh I come from a land, from a faraway place
Where the caravan camels roam
Where they cut off your ear
If they don't like your face
It's barbaric, but hey, it's home

When the wind's from the east
And the sun's from the west
And the sand in the glass is right
Come on down
Stop on by
Hop a carpet and fly
To another Arabian night

Arabian nights
Like Arabian days
More often than not
Are hotter than hot
In a lot of good ways

Arabian nights
'Neath Arabian moons
A fool off his guard
Could fall and fall hard
Out there on the dunes

Ahem. Well, with that out of the way, welcome to my gnoblog! This will mark the progress of my Arabyan tribe, the Djiin Eaters (in case the title wasn't a give-away). Inspiration was shamelessly stolen from WarbossKurgan's Arabyan Orc corsair Mordheim warband. Each of my last four armies has seen some kind of improvement in my modeling skills, and I want this one to be no different. I LOVE conversions, but up until now I have mainly used greenstuff for filling gaps and sculpting simple, messy things like scraps of cloth and flames. So my first goal is to expand my range of greenstuffing skills. The other goal is to teach myself how to blend and highlight without resorting to the (awesome) cheating that is drybrushing. And, just to be clear, I always enjoy comments, criticisms, suggestions, ideas, and random thoughts on life in general.

Cheers,
Noisy
And what would a gnoblog be without some WiP shots? Obviously I still have a lot of putty-work to go on these guys.

I think I'll nick-name this one "Tassels"

First test model for some Arabyan garb (Pretty sure I overtextured the sash. Next time I'll try something else)

And the start of a rather unique Mournfang. I figured that the wildlife is probably a little different along the Silk Road as compared to the Mountains of Mourn. I think I'll call them Grypheens (trying saying it aloud with a slight accent...it sounds cooler than it looks spelled out).

Just the Gryph

And now he has a friend!

Love the "grypheens" concept!
:D

what a great start
I'm looking forward to seeing these guys progress.

Ogres
Thanks guys!

I've managed to assemble a couple more Ogres for the Gut block, including a standard bearer and some extra bling for the champion.

I also decided to go with the Fenrisian Wolves for Sabres. With a suitable color scheme (will probably copy from a desert fox) I think they should fit in well. And the wolves are certainly big enough to justify the stat-line!

I am a fan!  Great work!
Ogre Achievements - 26/101 and counting!
Okay, so I'm in a bit of a bind. My army is going through an identity crisis, triggered by me realizing that Bloodletter faces (which I have a boatload of sitting around after my converted Tzeentch Daemons) added to the Ogres' helms look very much like the crests on samurai helmets... So now I can't decide if I want to stick with the Arabyan theme or defect to Nippon. Here's what we're looking at so far:

Arabyan types (obviously I'd add turbans and sashes etc if I continued this theme)

And the Nipponese (all the Ogres would get some level of the plated samurai armor, and the plates would be detailed with greenstuff to look more like this):

This one would be the start of the Nipponese Oni-binder (Firebelly)

And the Mournfang. I'm actually pretty sure that I could keep this head either way. Add plated armor for Nippon or sashes and a turban/neck covering for Araby:

Other units in the army will obviously change depending on the chosen theme. Sabres will use the Fenresian Wolves either way. For Araby they'd be painted in desert tones, and for Nippon they'd be giant foxes (with probably a little greenstuff for the snout and tail). What I'm really not sure about are the Leadbelchers. Araby I can just slap on some turbans and happily call it a day. Not sure what I could do for the Nipponese though, as they don't have heavy armor, so wouldn't get samurai helms. I could give them those Japanese conical hats, but I'm afraid they'd look very very silly on Ogres with cannons.

So what do you all think? Arabyan Djiin Eaters or Nipponese Oni Eaters?
I've scrolled up and down about half a dozen times before making this decision...

I love the sound of the Nippon Oni Eaters....but I feel the execution of the araybian theme may be a little easier as turbans and sashes would be easier to do in green stuff.

and after checking the pics again...I am going to say the Oni Eaters provided you can execute the plate armour well enough. The deciding factor for me is that I feel Stonehorns feel more Oni than Djinn to me :)

I'd say Araby. (Not that big of a weeabo myself.) Just because the bloodletter decorations can work in the Araby themed army just as well. So, it'll save you lots of work. Also, I don't think the samurai plating you've converted is as good as what I've seen from you previously - in terms of a subtle and convincing conversion..

Make it an "Ogres of the east" army...

if you don't like what you see here, get the FUNK out!
I personally like both ideas. I like the execution of the Araby more though. But I have done some lead belchers with those rice patty hats that I thought came out good. I made them to be ashigaru in my samurai army.

Here are some pics to give you an idea.

Keep up the good work, I look forward to seeing more from you!

I fought the Maw and the... Maw won
Both have been done before, but I vote araby. Everyone and their brother (including myself) has glued a fancy hat and a katana on an ogre and called it a samurai, not everyone has the modelling chops to do a good araby theme. Come to think of it I don't know if I have ever seen an entire ogre army in an araby theme. But whichever you choose I'm sure it will be every bit as jaw dropping a parade of excellence as your daemon army has become.
You could do both.  Make the oni eaters your elites, like maneaters or firebellies.  Then have the main army units arabians.

I dont think the bloodletter heads work except as a one off (maneaters, for instance?).  A whole army of them would look overdone imo.
