Sniper maneaters - the verdict?

original thread ↗

I have tried groups of 4-8 maneaters with poison and sniper and I find them to be:

Consistantly one of my top performers - very competative, almost broken!
2 (3.1%)
A great tactical unit that puts huge pressure on the opponent.
17 (26.2%)
A viable choice, although the competition from other special units is hard.
24 (36.9%)
More of a soft choice compared other special choices / maneater configurations.
9 (13.8%)
A gimmick unit, which can be fun in friendly game but will hardly ever be worth its points.
13 (20.0%)

Again who are these teclis guys that  run him in front of the army without the world dragon banner in the same unit? Book of Hoath is banned in nearly every event I have played in, but even the ones that permit it I see the etherial guy more often. And when you do see teclis its always in a bunker behind whatever he plans on mind razoring, so he is always screened, even if its a novice doing it on accident....

1. Banner of the World Dragon matters how when we are talking about Sniping Maneaters?

2. Not banned at 'Ard Boys or uncomped tournaments and some rule sets let you take it although penalize you in some manner.

3. Every time you say screened I think, "Do people no longer use hills?"

1. It doesn't matter for Sniper Maneaters directly, but it matters for what was proposed as their running mate, which is the Deathfist Slaughtermaster.

2. I prefer to think of things in the uncomped ruleset myself, as I have never played in a comped ruleset and I don't plan to do so.

3. ...Now that I think of it, they aren't quite as common as things like forests, marshes, or buildings in my experience. Even if they were, though, if you walk the unit with Teclis 1" behind the big fighting Horde, a hill won't do that much good for the LOS perspective.

The MEs don't need to see Teclis, they just need to see his unit and the hit gets assigned to him IIRC.

Incorrect, sir - they have to see Teclis, because they're targeting him. Page 75 of the BRB says you may shoot any model you can see.

My point was that in an uncomped environment, you either see the full frontal male nudity Teclis list (Banner of Sorcery, World Dragon Banner, tucked in the woods with Shadow Magic), you see the Book guy version of him in a Folding Fortress, or you get the Etherial Seer Council guy.  Comped HE its almost always the etherial guy.  Short version, High Elves are a not really the best target for a Snipereater/Deathfist list, compounded by the fact that they tend to bring almost no characters.
