Question about counting ranks (For stubborn)

original thread ↗

Hello, this isnt really an ogre rules question but sene you guys seem to be the most competent out of the warhammer forums I frequent I figured Id ask it here.

Lets say, I charge a unit of fifty spearmen.. (Fielded ten wide) with 2 units of 12 ogres (Fielded four wide) I kill lets say 10 of his die, and none of my ogres go down. He now has 4 ranks (counting the first) but each of my ogre units only has 3 ranks (also counting the first) but because I have more combined ranks, does that cause him to lose stubborn, or does it not matter?
I think he is still steadfast.  I don't have a book nearby, but think you compare the unit with the most ranks.  So he still wins out.  Will get back to you if someone doesn't beat me to it.
Its which side has the unit with the most ranks, not who has more combined together.

If each of your units only has 3 ranks you only have 3 to his 4.

So yeah, he is still steadfast.

And remember that to count for a rank you only need 5 or more models to count for a rank, even if the unit is 10 wide.

So he could have 35 dudes left, 3 ranks of 10 and 1 rank of 5 and still be steadfast.
Current win streak: 10

Things Fluffy,my Stonehorn, has flattened: Ancient Stegadon, Unit of 5 Chariots with Tomb king, Chaos Lord, Herald of Khorne on Jugger,
x58 Forever steadfast

but because I have more combined ranks, does that cause him to lose stubborn, or does it not matter?

Ranks do not counter Stubborn, they do however counter Steadfast. The two words are not interchangeable.
