Hi there, I'm brand spanking new to the ogre kingdoms and after the great feedback I got in the butchers cauldron about my Tzeench themed Ogre, I've taken the advice to start a Gnoblog. I've blogged the process of my last few 40K armies and it really helps me to keep the inspiration and actually get an army finished!
The Basic idea is an Ogre army which has been corrupted by Tzeench and begun to mutate and fight in the name of the enigmatic changer of ways. I'm still working on the fluff, but I'll try and get some notes up about the tribe and its characters tomorrow. In the meantime, here is the army list I'm thinking of:
CORE UNITS: 4 Iron Guts _Standard __Look out Gnoblar __Warbanner _Joined by Gyrathor and Skyronn__242
5 Iron Guts _Standard __Look Out Gnoblar _Joined by Daedrik_______________265
3 Bulls _Iron Fists______________________120
3 Bulls _Iron Fists______________________120
3 Bulls__________________________105
20 Gnoblars______________________40
20 Gnoblars______________________40
SPECIAL UNITS: 2 Leadbelchers___________________110
2 Leadbelchers___________________110
RARE UNITS: Slave Giant______________________175
TOTAL: 1998
I'd loved to have had 9 man units (sacred number of Tzeench!) but it's just not feasible with ogres, however, excluding the characters (and giant, he's a character in my mind and will get some fluff tomorrow) There are 9 units.
and this is the first pic I've got of my ogre colour scheme:
Mor Gnoblogging tomorrow. I'm going to try and update something everyday. C & C always welcome throughout the process, help me to make the change eaters a reality!
Thanks Corai

Nice, really like your idea, and that dark blue colour scheme looks sweet. The minor mods you've done are pretty cool too. Will definatly follow this one, hope it all works out for you.

Hey cool idea for the ogres I could see how it would work out. I myself am not too familiar with Tzeench or any of the chaos gods. But Isn't gold or yellow part of the color scheme, I do see the ogres boots and belts but maybe a gold tattoo or something might be cool, also once again this is just what I have seen on tzeench players armies. Maybe taking some tomb kings equipment and converting or placing bitz on the ogres would give them a more tzeenchie feel. Once again these are just ideas of mine.

I did something similar with Death Guard. 7 units with 7 models in each unit eccept the vehicles.
I don't know how to really do this with Ogres. Perhaps since 9 and multiples of 9 are favored Tzeench . How would 3 work since 3 multiplies so nicely into 9. I haven't seen anywhere in the GW fluff for this so it may be difficult to pass on as fluff.
The 9-unit idea should give some good weight in the fluff. I bet for 2000 points a 9 unit Ogre Kingdoms army should work well. I will have to army builder that.
I really love that color scheme. It gives your Ogres an almost magical Djini presence. Wait I will be punished by Papa Nurgle for saying that.

I love the colour scheme, and the fluff. A thought: would Tzeentch make his Ogres more intelligent.
Hey I got a pet Gnoblar! mmmmmm Gnoblar...

Interesting question. Perhaps the basic troops are souless.

++UPDATE++
right, so much for daily updates eh! Well, Due to my weird staff rota at work, I get Tuesdays and Wednesdays off (but work every weekend). Accordingly the last two days were spent getting high off glue fumes, sticking myself to the table and hacking chunks out of my fingers with a craft knife. The upside of this is that (with a few exceptions) all 2000 points of Ogres are now assembled and ready for some mammoth painting sessions. I'll try and post some WIP shots of the more interesting conversions tonight when I get back from work. I'll try breaking the post up into segments to show here I'm up to:
__Models__ All Iron Guts and Bulls are ready for Paint. The Giant has been converted and is ready, as are the two Butchers (both made from Plastic Bull Sprues).
The Gnoblars are still stuck to their sprues as I have second thought after second thought (more on that later).
The Leadbelchers have had their forearms scuplted into flames and are going to have the barrells embellished with plasticard and GS tonight to make them more like the hellcannon.
The Tyrant Is being converted to look like one of the chaos ogres drawn by Adrian Smith in a WFB art book (can't remember the name, it was about the build up to storm of chaos). The ogre had a huge, armoured barrell chest with thick, muscular amrs and a human sized head. I liked the alsck of balance, and it really made the picture look more powerful. To that end, my tyrant is being amde from the stock metal kit, with an armoured body, and a chaos warrior head. So far, his disc has been cut from Plasticard and I've started sculpting it to look a bit more like a daemon, the gnoblars have been arranged onm his base to bear the disc on their back, and I have made the basic armour for the torso. Tonight I'm going to 'chaos' this up a bit with some plasticard egding and then go to work on the back armour.
__Army List__ I'm having second thoughts about the list. On the one hand, I have 40 Gnoblars on the sprue that came with the battallions, and I know they give me a useful meatshield against missile weapon heavy armies, but on the other hand, I just don't like horde units! It's a bit p[athetic, I just can't find the time to glue and paint them all to the same standard as the rest of the force. If I drop them, and loose a few bits of kit from my tyrant I can raise the points for a second Giant, or a hunter (they look fun) or 3rd butcher. The down side of this is having to buy another model (which I told myself I wouldn't do after sending £40 odd yesterday on a giant and tyrant!) How useful have people found Gnoblars? Should I just suck it up and put them together? Am I going to misso ut by not fielding them in favour of another big, expensive character type unit?
__Fluff__ This is proving harder to come up with than I thought. Usually fluff just comes ot me, but I'm finding myself having trouble making any decisions! What i know for certain is that Skyronn (one of the butchers, who has a mutated left arm) was cast out of his tribe as a youth, wandered into the wilderness and encountered a daemon of Tzzeench. Skryonn accepted Tzeench, not knowing that the daemon would possess him and take controll of his powerful body. The Presence of the daemon within him accounted for the change of skin colour and eventual hairy growths on his back and shoulders.
In His absence, the Tzeench smiled upon the tribe and they started to undergo uncontrollable mutation. Fearing the great maw had forsaken them, the ogres despaired. Upon returning to the Tribe, Skyronn preached of the great changer, who's power could save the ogres from the terrbile plague of mutation. Skryonn tricked all the ogres in the tribe into participating in a powerful magic ritual, dedicating their souls to Tzeench. They obeyed, desperate to rid themselves of the mutation plague. Part of the ritual involved blinding everyone of the ogres in the tribe, and the howls of agony and ritualistic magic echoed long into the night. By morning, all that remained of the Tribe, were soulless, hulking ogres, their bodies stained blue by their affiliatio nwith the changer of ways. Now they have left their kingdom and make war on the west, driven by some secret only the daemon who wears Skyronn's skin can know for certain.
So, the ogres do have individual thought, they just don't have souls. And although Skryonn is the spiritual and tactical leader of the force, his champion Gyrathorr is physically more powerful (thus acting as the tyrant). Through Gyrathor, Skryonn controlls the younglings in the tribe until they reach maturity, undergo the ritual bl9inding and give their souls to Tzeench.
So thats where I'm up to at the moment, more tonight, pics too!

Well the fluff seems to be coming on great to me, wish I had the time to sit and do that much work on my tribe...
Anyway, Gnoblers are invaluable to an OK army, and very few if any OK generals find success without at least some of these little blighters. Simply put they are an essential tool of the Ogre War Machine. So I'd say keep them.

++UPDATE++ Here's some wip pics. Hope to be getting them painted in the next few days:
My Warbanner:
An Irongut:
Another Iron Gut:
Skryonn, Daemonhost, Prophet of Tzeench
Voidwater, a butcher/sorcerer: (now i see the pics, I need to do some more work on the outstreched hand)
My Giant (so tempted to put Billy Cystal on tha base!). I'm running with a giant, bound daemon-thing. The GS wound round his arms and weaponm will be done up like ribbons of parchment - wards to keep the daemon bound.
So, as promosed, there were some wip pics!

Those are pretty awesome ..Love the hoods..Although the hood on the prophet should be a little more open ..the eye patch is out and the good eye is covered...but what the heck do I know it looks excellent

Well first of, Wow, amazing work, your conversion skills are impresive. Love the models, and the small touches you've added are great.
Gutsmasher, I would assume that Skyron, like the others, is blind, and so it would make no differance whch eye was visable through the hood, and secondly I'd make a gues that those protrusions on the gut plates of the butchers is gonna be the Eye.
I do have one question Corai, why is the book held by Skyron held with the pages away from him, as opposed as towards him? I assume there is a reason.
I'm not sure what extra work is needed on the outstretched hand, but you are the modeler, so Im sure you know best, but to let you know, I think it looks awsome, not often you see magic casters in mid cast.

The spell book and hand looks oddly like a skaven bit. I actually use one on a Chaos Wizard. Nice green stuff work! I didn't think the Ogres need any green stuff but you have proved me wrong

Hi guys, thanks for the positive comments, I hope to have some wip pictures of the Tyrant (with his tiny head!) up tonight.
@Gutmasher: Greendragon is indeed correct, Skryonn is blind like all the ogres, so it didn't make much differance which eye was exposed (it just saved me GSing another eyepatch!)
@Greendragon:Looking at it, I think the hand of the spell caster needs reshaping a bit, from the side, its still to obvious that it used to hold a bear trap. I might just wreath the hand more in flame though. And the book, when finished (the pages need finishing up and I want to put some gothic style ribbon book marks draoping over it) will have chaos symbols painted onto its pages. The idea is that Skryonn doesn't need to read the pages becasue he is a daemon and already knows what they contain, so I guess i was thinking its displayed like a totem in front of him, or a show of faith.
@Baldbeachbum: The Book is obviously scratch built (needs the pages reworking, they look a little ugly at the moment) and the hand is from the chaos mutation sprue (exactly the right size for ogres...who knew?) but I see what you mean about skaven. Was it the old plaguemonk special character who had a book held in the same way?
Thanks Corai

Corai08 Oct 2006
thanks, as mentioned above, I scrapped the disc idea becasue it wasn't coming out like I had intended, and didn't fit the revised fluff (with the Butcher being the real worshiper of Tzeench)
@ Tyrant Grog: For fur I stick a blob of Greenstuff down and use my scuplting tool the smooth it out to the right shapoe and size, and remove any thumbprints (I use the GW one, i've heard there are cheaper and better tools on the market, but I've always liked the GW one). Make sure not to make the GS too thin as you need a bit of depth to cut into. Then I use a craft knife and, starting from the middle, draw 'S' over and over. Then go back and do this again, but at a slight angle. After that, just keep at it until you're satisfied with thetexture. I've found varying the amount of pressure you put on the knife helps too. It's better to start out with deepcuts and finish with lots of very shalow ones to give it that fur texture.
++UPDATE++ Glued together my second regiment of Gnoblars ofr the army today (no pics as there's nothing special about these guys, hopefully they'll fit when they're painted). I also built movement trays out of plasticard for all of my regiments (Why does GW not make movement trays for the ogre sized gentleman ) out of some heavy duty plasticard. Tomorrow night I'm hoping to smooth out the joins in the trays with some GS and put sand on all the bases. The army is then completley finished construcytion and ready for painting (conveneiently in time for my day off on Tuesday). A Whole 2000point army built and converted in under a week, God I love ogres!

++UPDATE++ That was a productive Couple of days off! I have now painted the rest of the unit of bulls the test ogre came from and have almost finished the first unit of iron guts (5 iron guts and a butcher). They just need the brown cloth highlighting some more and the bases doing. My Camera ran out of battery last night so no pics till I get back from work (hopefully will have pics tonight of 2 completed regiments!). I'd hoped to get a bit more than this done, but there was no painting done at all on Wednesday as I actually managed to get a game in, and what a game:
++Pseudo Battle Report++ It was my first game with ogres, my first game of 7th edition, and my first game of fantasy in over two years (have been enthralled with the 41st milenium for much of that time). So I wasn't going in feeling too confident.
_Forces: I was using the 2000 point ogre list at the start of this thread. My opponent was my good buddy James, who has been gaming about 6 months longer than me, was one of the people to bring me into the hobby 10 years ago, and I have consistently enjoiyed playing against in virtually all of Games Workshop's systems for said decade. He was fielding 2000 points of Cult of Slaanesh (from the Storm of Chaos book). His force was largley untested at that size, but it was a good excuse for him to use the newly painted greater daemon of slaanesh he bought from Forge world at Gamesday. I don't know his list but a brief overview of what he fielded: __Keeper of Secrets __Sorceress on Steed of Slaanesh __18 Devoted of Slaanesh __16 Dark Elves with Repeater Crossbows __15 Daemonettes __15 Chaos Warriors __6 Daemonettes on Steeds __Chaso Spawn
_Battle: I won the dice for 1st turn and gave it to James, hoping he would close some of the distance between us and allow me to charge on the first turn. Alas he didn't fall for my transparent trap and only advanced slightly I followed up with ambulling forward in my turn, neither of us wanting to weater too many charges. I delibertly pushed my Giant out in front, baiting the Keeper of secrets. The only model lost on either side in the first turn was one of my iron guts which My Tyrant tenderized thanks to a particularly nasty Slaanesh spell. In Hindsight, considering the multi wound killing capacity of my Tyrant, I really should have used a dispell scroll on this, but then I didn't anticipate faling to roll higher than 12 on 6 (lucky number of slaanesh, i should have known!) dice.
Turn two started with a bit more excitement. The Keeper of secrets took the bate and charged the giant. He rolled well for his spawn and it sailed into one of my Gnoblar Units, where it would stay for the rest of the game! Also, the big block of daemonettes charged one unit of 3 ogre bulls. The Bulls took no wounds, killed a daemonette but lost on combat resolution and ran away, letting the daemonettes pursure into the unit of Ironguts (with Daedrik Butcher) foolishly placed behind them. In my deployment I had not taken into account the 7th edition change which allowed James to then fight that new combat in the same phase. Thankfully, he succeeded in killing one iron gut, whilst the blood cleaver (great investment) and remaining iron gut clove though enough to casue the daemons to loose a few wounds through instability. The Keeper of Secrets (much scarier than I expected) started her combat by casuing 5 wounds on my 6 wound giant! I was quite lucky on my roll though and 'eadbutted the daemon, allowing me to at least survive another combat round as it was dazed. In my turn I rallied the fleeing buls, and charged another unit of them in to support the butcher-ironguts. My other unit of Ironguts (with the butcher and tyrant) chraged his chosen of slaanesh and were assisted by a flank chrage from the unengaged unit of gnoblar. The combined bull charge, casualties and gnoblar rank bonus broke the devoted and they were ran down. Equally, on the other side of the battlefield, the other unit of iron guts beat the daemonettes who failed their instability roll disasterously and dissapeared in a puff of (scented) smoke. As the keeper of secrets was dazed, my Giant got a chance to attack, and yelled and bawled two further wounds off the 6 wound daemon.
From here on out it was just me cleaning up the rest of his army. The Dark elf xbowmen were slowly whittled down by gnoblar sharp stuff, the other unit of gnoblars finally killed the chaos spawn, the Keeper of secrets saw off the giant, only to be tenderized by my tyrant, the sorceress was bull charged to death and the daemonettes on steeds, whilst able to kill a whole unit of bulls, were blown off the table by the magic missile spell from both of my butchers.
_Result: So, I lost: 3 bulls, 2 iron guts, giant and a handfull of gnoblar. He lost his whole army.
_Aftermath: So, I'm trying to learnsomething from this. I know that one game can't be used as an example of how every game will go (e.g. I cast almsot no magic as he had a level four and a level 2 wizard on tha table for most of the game, but I haven't seen many players use a levelk 4 wizard as their only Lord choice), but this is my only experience with ogres so I'll try and let you know what I learened, if I'm wraong, pleas correct me: __Firstly, I'd forgotten how much fun a game of Fantasy can be. Even though James was massacred, he still enjouyed it as much as I did, great game __Magic: Although I got almost no spels cast, I was stupid in my prioritising of them. Spend 2 years out of the game and forget not to try and cast the spell you want the most first! Lesson learnt the hard way. __Although my giant did hold up the keeper of secrets for half the game, I'm not sure it was a good sacrifice. My Tyrant should have been more than capable of killing the daemon, whils tthe giant could have been running riot through infantry who wouldn't be able to wound it quite as easily. __Lead Belchers: Mine spent the game maneuvering, trying to get a good shot, then missing when they did.I had them covering either flank, but think I may be better runngin them next to each other, firing in alternate turns to give me a misisle weapon threat every turn. Also, I think I should have been more choosey about my targets, as I often had to move to get in range I was hitting on 6s (I assume leadbelchers suffer from long range penalty as normal) and failing to do anything. for 220 points they managed to kill 1 daemonette all game.
So that's where the chage eaters are at. Hopefully finish painting the iron guts tonight and get some pics up
Thanks Corai

++UPDATE++ Well, it looks like it's taking me longer than i thought to get this unit of iron guts painted. I've got photos of the first finished bulls unit and where I'm at with the iron guts
Bulls:
Iron Guts: Obviously the butcher stil needs his gut-eye painting, and he needs some funky flaming blue skulls effect on his out stretched hand, as well as his gnoblar painting. The Standard still needs its look out gnoblar painting and some crude symbol painted on it. I'm going to try and do the maw symbol in bleached bone with an extra bit coming off the top and bottom to make the tzeench rune (like my warbanner conversion). Hopefully I'll get the unit finished and based tomorrow.

Comments: Theese are awesome ^^.EXCEPT (!!!) on simple thing that REALLY drags theese models down a bit. You have left some moldlines...Maybe it´s just me but the best painted miniature still only looks semi-good if they have ANY moldlines left on them... Truly envy the fact that you can atleast use GS.The chainmail in the sockets of the helmets could have been done better, but they are still top knots. The shoes look alittle strange to,but not that much ^^.
Questions: That´s exactly the vibrant skin i´m aming for! (Green tough...) Just how did you do that skin? And,the big hand on the Chaos Shield Irongut, where did you get that from?.

Thnks guys @ Kyte: aaargh! I knew that and had a mind blank at 12.30 last night when I was painting it! oh well, I guess I'll be repainting the banner slightly tonight! Unless his logo were to have...changed...
@Mawgrim: thanks for the comments. Unfortunatley, one of the downsides of assmebling the whole army in one day is missing the odd mold line here and there! I'm going to go and scour the models I haven't painted yet for more to avoid this i nthe future, but I guess, when planning to build and paint them so quickly, I didn't really think they would turn out this well. I know what is wrong with the chainmail scuplting, and thankfully it have been remedied on the second unit of iron guts. This was my first attempt at chainsmail and i just went in with holes anwhere, when they should have been regimented and in straight lines. Live and learn eh. The Blue skin was done in the following stages: _Midnight blue all over _Regal blue on all raised areas _Regal Blue Enchanted blue mix (2:1) broad highlight _Regal Blue Enchanted Blue mix (1:1) highlight _Enchanted blue extreme highlight _Blue ink watered down (1:3)
I'm not entirely sure how this would translate to green as I've not painted as much of it, but I'd estimate that midnight blue would be Dark Angels Green and Regal blue Snot Green, but I'm not sure of enchanted blue's equivilent. You may be much more knowledgable than me though! And the crazy hand on the shield guy came form the chaos mutation sprue, perfecrtly sized for ogres!

@ Kyte: hmm, good point, they probabely don't know any beteer! (with the exception of my daemonhost butcher of course)!
I'm not really sure why they are all blind, I just thought it would be kinda cool I guess! I figured it was creepy and the idea that all these ogres are without sight but still perfectly able of performing their battle duties reminded me of the ideas of a lot of seers. It just seemed to fit.
I'd love to team up with the tzeench beastmen but I don't know the next time I'll be able to get out to Denmark! Maybe gamesday next year!

The metal is painted tin bitz all over, then drybrushed with boltgun metal, then extreme highlighted with chainmail and finally given a very watered down wash of flesh wash. Occasionally, where nescessary, I'll then highlight the very extreme areas with chainmail again.

++UPDATE++ Used my weekend (Tuesday and Wednesday for me!) to do some more painting: Finished the second unit of bulls with iron fists:
and knocked out the slave giant. After a bit of repainting, I abandoned some of my original ideas. The parchement wrapped around the arms looked alright, but the model needed more bubonic brown to fit in with the colour of the army (plus yelow is another primary colour assosciated with Tzeench) so these were repainted. Also, although I was starting to like the reverse higlights to make it look daemonic, I decided to play it safe and go with the same sin tone as the rest of the army. Although a chaos army would seem to go against this, I can't stand an army that doesn't look uniform:
Over the next couple of evenings I'm going to try and finishe the final unit of buls (without iron fists) and move on to the leadbelchers. Afte this, next tuesday/wednesday I'm hoping to knock out the tyrant and his ironguts, leaving me just 40 gnoblars to be drybrushed and inked (can't really see myself going all out to paint them, although I do like the blended look of my butchers gnoblar so the front rank and side models amy be getting a bit more attentions).

What brown colours did you use for the banner? Looks like very dark skin, love the look and want do duplicate it for one of my own banners!

Another slow day at work so I've added a second chapter of the Change Eater fluff to the Maw Pit Sagas forum. I'm thinking about chartin Skryonn's grand crusade i nthe name of Tzeench through a bunch of differant perspectives.
@ Grimclaw: The Banner was painted in the same way was I paint all the leggings in the army: _Base Coat Scorched Brown _Broad highlight scorched brown, bestial brown (1:1) _Extreme highlight bestial brown _extreme highlight graveyard earth (only use this stage on deep folds or really important models, often unnessescary) _wash with Brown ink dilluted (1:4) with water.
Hope that helps

work on the tribe has slowed to a halt as late as I've been dealing with a particularly aggressive case of tonsillitis. I've been stuggling through work each day then just going to be when I get home. Hopefully, with tomorrow being my day off, I'll be rested enough to paint aonther regiment of ogres but I'll have to see. In the mean time I've been thinking. In the past, my approach to fantasy and 40k armies has been to work out my army list, then only buy exactly what's needed for that army (thus allowing them to cost as little as possible). But with the ogres, I already have a 2000 point army (that being UK tournament standard size) but I keep thinking of all the other fun Ogre units which aren't in my listst that i want to field. To that end, I've been thinking about extending my army to a 3000 point tribe. Although it's rare I'll play a game of hat size, it gives me lots of options to change up my list from time to time.
What I'm thinking of for the next 1000 points is _Slaughtermaster(probabley with bankstick, 3 wyrdstones and a dispel scroll). This would represent Skryonn more accurately, and use the existing Skryonn model as another butcher in a 3K list. _2 Gorgers _2 Scrap Launchers _Hunter with 2 cats and longstrider _2 units of Gnoblar trappers
I haven't figured out the points exactly but I know this is around an additional 1K points. This has thrown up a whole load of new conversion and theme challenges/opportunities. Here's what I'm thinking at the moment:
__Slaughtermaster I'm going to use the paymaster Maneater and extent his coat up into a hooded robe. I'm not sure whether to repalce the left armw tih a mas of tentacles or not, but I will deffintly put a bigger, better tome in his right arm
__Gorgers At first I was thinking of ing just Chaos spawn, but I thought that could get a bit confusing becasue they are not conversions and already have a place in a variety of army lists as chaos spawn. To that end I think I might get some more plastic buls and convert the hell out of them, turing them into really twisted, bizarre, chaotic twisted messes. Something along the lines of Kyte's chaos ogres but even more off the wall and bigger.
__Hunter This one caused me a bit of trouble at first. I couldn't see how a hunter would fit into my army theme, so I tried breaking down the way the rules work: +They can't join units +They have a high strength missile attack capable of killing a lot of models (not to say it will!) +They are accompanied by two fast beasts Now the fast beasts were easy, they'll be some chaos hounds painted appropriatley, but I'm thinking of doing the hunter like a true, bound daemon host. Like he's a living icon of chaos (so he can't join other unbits but the daemonic beasts flock to him). The missile attack is a powerful spell he has bound into his flesh. For the conversion I'm thinking the ninja maneater (love that model) but painting all the bandages/wrappings like parchment text (like a more extreme idea of what i was going to go with my giant). For the spell.bolt thower I was thinking of taking the many arrow's I have from the giant kit and have them leaping from an outsretched hand, some coming from within the hand some already in flight, like its a bunch of magic missiles.
__Scrap Launcher I'm not really sure about this one. There are parts oif the model I really like (the rhinox, the gnoblars) who can easily be green stuffed to fit in with the theme but I don't really like the whole wooden contraption thing. I don't know. What do you think, should I just make a chaotic looking scrap launcher, or have you got any ideas for something better? Maybe a rhinox drawn hellcannon? I don't know, help
Thanks Corai

First of all thanks for using my idea with chaos ogres...
For the Hunter's crossbow, I'd equip the model with a staff. Maybe a Lord of Change's staff! Or you could convert the hunter from an inquisitor scale daemonhost or unbound daemon. You could also use a Lord Of Change without wings.
You could also give your slaughtermaster a Lord of Change's staff.

Grimclaw23 Oct 2006
The Scrappy is a tough one, wooden contraptions dont feel very chaotic. Black steel and spikes r more like it. You could smoothen out the wood with GS and add alot of spikes and mutations, faces pushing out of the metal (easy conversion often seen in 40k), arms and tentacles and such... And make sure u mutate the Rhinox as well.
Jestor23 Oct 2006

Of course, if you truly are a devotee of any being purporting the God of Change, you'd be more likely to have said Hellconnon being carried by one small but very very angry Gnoblar. With big boots! Logic, after all, is merely another set of rules for Tzeentch to desecrate!

Well, the old tonsilitis/man flu didn't clear up as early as I would have hoped. didn't get chance to do any painting these last couple of days, Though I did scuplt some fur onto a few gnoblars to act as trappers. I had another game this afternoon against the same cult of Slaanesh player I massacred last time. I was a bit more worried going into this one as after his defeat a few weeks agao, we'd sat down and seen where I could improve his list. I took my standard list. but dropped a few magic items here and there to squeeze in the unit of gnoblar trappers. His list looked vaguely like this: _Keeper of Secrets _lv2 Sorceress on Steed of Slaanesh _15 Daemonettes _15 Chaos warriors (this time with war banner) _20 Devoted of Slaanesh _6 Mounted daemonettes _2 Reaper Bolt Throwers _5 Shades
Things didn't go quite as rosy for me as I would have hoped. I had a run of poor luck att he start of the game, with Skryonn miscasting on his first attempt at any spell then rolling a 1, suceeding in killing himself, casuing 3 (!) wounds to the other butcher and wounding a few of the iron guts in contact with him. Not great! I also took quite a pasting when my lord's unit (minus the butcher with the chronic indigestion) got charged by the keeper of secrets who succeeding in casting a spell with irresistable force which prevented me from attacking. I Lost all the iron guts in the unit and the fleeing Lordb arely escaped (only to be cut down later by a handful of devoted).
All in all, it didn't go too bad from there. The giant was almost killed by the combined forcem of the bolt throwers but held on til the end t jump up and down on the devoted who kiled my tyrant. The bonecrusher spell again proved to be the bain of daemonettes and my Leadbelchers actually did something useful, shearing a couple of ranks off the devoted despite one of them misfiring every time.
The gnoblar trappers were not as successful as I would have hoped, they got intercepted in their bolt thrower hunting by the shades and swiftly cut down (I was 'out-deployed' by my opponent and deserved everything I got). Magicaly I was shut down for the rest of the game (with my remaing butcher on one wound against 6 levels of magic. But the man of the match has to go to the two gnoblar fighter units who not only pased their terror tests to charge the keeper of secrets, their big number s and static combat bonus' managed to kill the thing with instability, a feat my tyrant and unit of iron guts had failed miserabley at, go gnoblars. (I have been completely converted from my earlier aaumption of their uselessness). In the end I scraped a solid victory (beat him by 750 points).
From this I've learned that the lead belchers can be much more useful than I thought if played in tandum, allowing one unit to fire each turn, that gnoblar trapperscan be very good but a lot depends on their deployment, and that for the second game in a row the tenderiser has failed to be worth its points (one day!).
We're looking at a rematch in a fortnight at 2500 points if we can make it (so slaughtmaster/3rd butcher, gorgers and scrap launchers are planned for when I get paid at the end of the month).
On the subect of scrap launchers, I think what I'm going to do for the conversions is get a coiuple of the forgeworld rhinox riders and mount the hellcannon on them (either mutating out of the beasts r possibley being mounted on them and used by the ogres, like a giant leadbelcher on rhinox).
Found time to mess around with photoshop and knock myself up a more appropriate avatar (my first drawing of an ogre, I think the cartoonish style suits them better than the black and white noir style I'm more accustomed to).
Thanks Corau

About the Hunter, maybe u could convert a Bull with flames and for the Sabres give him flamers. Seeing as the fires of Tzeentch are prevelant in ur army I think it would really help him tie in with the overall force.
2 Pet Gnoblars! I dub them Itchy and Scratchy, for reasons that are too private to divulge.
Corai27 Oct 2006
oooh, I actually really like that idea, my orignial idea for the army was that they were constantly on fire (blue fire of course) but I wasn't sure I'd be able to model this on every ogre. It may well work on a hunter though (and definitley explain why he can't join other units). I might mount some flamers on some screamers to account for the cavalry base and the extra movement. Hmm, now to have a think about scuplting flames, I guess I's do it so there were a few flames coming off every upward facing surface then paint the whole thing like it was on fire (white at centre, getting bluer as it moves out towards the edge). Need to be careful not to overdo it though, I'm not a fan of the new empire fire wizard (athough I like what they were going for).

++UPDATE WITH PICS++ Okay, not the pics I was expecting. I had planned to paint Skryonn and the iron gut unit today but I ran out of spray paint half way through undercoating which put the scupper on that plan (should be getting soe more in the mail tomorrow so hopefully that unit will get painted eventualy!) Still have to decide how to paint the Tyrant. So i didn't feel like I hadn't sone anything today I took a kniofe to my lead belchers. I was never really happy with the look of the hands of fire. I just couldn't quite make it look quite how i wanted so i scrapped the idea, pulled tham apart and tried again.
Now I've given them the standard hairy shoulders and blindness. I added armour to their forearms becasue I thought they looked a little bland before and chaosed up the cannons a bit.

I did like the idea of using tyranid bio weapons, but I didn't have any, and would need to buy some, whereas I've got a few sprues of leadbelcher cannons lying around so you can see my predicament.
In other news, I've just bought 4 maneaters on eBay for £23 still in the blister. The Ninja is going to be my hunter as discussed and the paymaster'll be my slaughtermaster, but I'll also have a pirate and empire soldier maneater. I don't know whether to try selling these on or to do some other conversion with them. Has anyone got any ideas? I could potenitally make oe another butcher (should I ever want to field that many) or even a battle standard? Any conversion ideas are welcome.

Spent today and so far I've got all he fur, metal and blue done on my second Iron guts unit. I'm going to press on as long as I can today with the browns, but I've got a filming job tonight so will have to finish them tomorrow. That being said, tomorow is my brother (and housemate)'s birthday so I don't know how long I'll get to work on them then either! But, by the end of wednesday I'll get some finished pictures up...honest...
I've been thinking of my next conversion project after the slaughtermater and hunter and possibley BDSB (for which I have the parts coming in the mail from eBay) and the two hellcannon scrap launchers... Maneaters!
I was thinking I really like the look of the rules for them and every now and then it might be fun to field a unit of around three. It also gives me the perfect oppurtunity to convert three chaos ogres to represent the other three chaos gods. I figure thats a pretty good representation of maneateryness, and since maneaters stand out even in a regular OK army, I can handle having three ogres that don't fit the colour scheme. Here's what I'm thinking for the conversions (all based on plastic bulls):
_Khorne: taking my cue from an image of the bloodthirster in the 5th ed Chaos army book, as well as a monster from the hellboy comics I'm thiking of adding a warhound (one of the mordheim metal ones, not a wolf) head to an ogre body, given it cloven hoofs and backwards knees like a bloodletter and a big axe of khorne (great weapon). The neck join wil be covered bya fur and a collar of khorne.
_Slaanesh: Slaanesh is the god of pleasure, and in humans that usualy manifests itself as sexual pleasure, but I don't see sex as the ultimate form of ogre pleasure, more like eating. So an ogre of slaanesh would be even fatter than a regular ogre. So far I'm in two minds over how to do this. Either have some grotesque ogre being carried on a palanquin by loads of gnoblars, ling prone like ceaser being fed by more gnoblars (like a mini version of greasus goldtooth). OR, the giant body of an ogre and the legs of a snake (like the slaanesh steed). Thoughts and opinions welsome
_Nurgle: This one will have his belly so distended it's split open and there are gnoblars and nurglings spilling out. He may be hooded ina similar manner to my butchers and will have a massive scythe.
So far the biggest sticking block ofr me is that I really want to give them a brace of handguns, but can't decide how to do it on the models. I'm thinking maybe just have a gnoblar on each base carrying the guns, but maybe there's a sufficient 'counts as' conversion that would do.
Any thoughts or help would be appreciated
Thanks Corai

Though I'd say go for option number three, maybe with a little adjustment: no human skin tones. I don't like the crossover of 40k to fantasy and I can understand you not wanting to do it all over again in the same way.

I'd go with number 3 with the blue/copper skin combination, For me, the change eaters should be blue!
I also think that going over old ground, although it would be fast, wouldn't represent the kind of challenge I think you want either - and taking them in a different directon will be inspiring too.

I think option 3 (with the blue skin) is probably the most likely too.
I'm not certain about gorgers yet but am considering either doing chaos spwan again (this time using the plastic chaos spawn) or making some kind of half giant thing that's bigger than an ogre but smaller than a chaos giant.
for the list, I'm working on the following (off the top of my head):
Tyrant __Tenderizer __Mawseeker __jade Lion
Butcher __Skull mantle __Siegebreaker
Butcher __Bang Stick __Dispel Scroll
Butcher __Halfling Cookbook __Dispel Scroll
3 Bulls __Bellower
3 Bulls __Belower
20 gnoblar Fighters
8 Gnoblar Trappers
3 Iron Guts __Bellower
3 Iron Guts __Bellower
3 iron Guts __Bellower __Standard ___Warbanner
3 Yhetees

IIRC, that clocks in at around 2000 points. I'd need to work it out again with the book to e sure

I like the list, strong (optimised) and fun as well. Though I personally would keep the Banner because you'll run out of deployment room pretty soon with that many small units on the table!
In reference to the theme itself, i too thought option 3 was the best by far. I'm pretty sure you'd get bored (even if you were enjoying it) of doing the same old stuff again, and the 40k idea (however cool) might pose some irritating player problems ("well that's no fair because i thought they were bulls" etc). The third one sounds awesome...though the deceiver butcher is confusing...can't tell if i think it'd go cultists would be awesome, what models would you use also? and blue skin or armour? puzzling again...perhaps ogre skin so as not to lose sight of what they really are with the blue sculpted armour...however blue skin is so cool...

I would agree that 3) is probably the best route, with the blue skin. Check out the Bitz sites and get a bunch of Defiler masks as a base to work from on characters maybe (I did it for my 'Chaoseater' Ogre)
The armylist looks fairly solid to me. Maybe drop the cookbook for a second scroll though.
You could do the Gorgers similar to mine - use Squigs as heads on Rat Ogre or Spawn bodies - I'm sure with your sculpting skills they'd look awesome!

Meet Kenneth and George, my Backscratcher Gnoblars.
Ghworg30 Jul 2008
I think that perhaps the army could reflect on a new aspect of the Change Eaters. The original fluff states that they have broken through the mountains and into the Empire, unleashing a wave of Tzeentchian cultist activity. So perhaps now you can portray the change Eaters as they are in the midst of the invasion. Ideas are: 1) A more elite army as the more inexperienced troops have been killed or toughened up by the campaigning 2)More heavily armoured/better armed Ogres as they loot from the corpses of the dead 3)The prescence of filthy cultists replacing Gnoblars, representing the Tzeentchian rebels following the Change Eaters.
Essentially what this provides is a new image of the Change Eaters along with a progression of the original fluff that hopefully will inspire you to write more.
Hope this helps,
Ghworg

Personally I'd love to see an army in the style of your big armored tyrant golem, though with that in mind have you seen the latest Warriors of Chaos rumors? Chaos ogres can have marks AND have chaos armor! I immediately thought of big suits of blue armor slamming forward in the name of change. MoT is unclear at the moment, but will likely be like the WD list, 6+ ward if you don't have one, +1 to ward save if you do, +1 to cast on a sorcerer. AND finally, one of the special characters allows you to take brutes - trolls, ogres, etc - as core choices, making an entire army of the armored lads a total posibility.

Corai09 Oct 2008
9th October 2008 - Aaaaaand we're back Low, like john travolta before them, the Change Eaters are making a comeback.
Having qualified for the GT finals with my Tree spirit army (through a best army nomination rather than anything approaching competent generalship!) I've been thinking about what to take to the finals. I've decided my goal, rather than to win any games, is to have a real solid go at getting another nomination for best army, and (dare I say it) even winning this time.
With that in mind, it's time to rebuild the change Eaters, but this time, with a bit of a twist. With Skryonn dying and being reborn as a daemon during the last part of the fluff, he now encompasses more traditional chaos elements into his army, and as Boss_Salvage so acurately predicted, I can now do this using the new Warriors of Chaos book.
Having stolen aa look at the new book, I'm planning on building the following list
Sorceror Lord Disc All the trimmings
Sorceror Steed of chaos, more trimmings
Exalted Champion steed yet more trimmings
Exalted champ BSB Blasted standard
3 x 5 marauder horsemen with musos
3x 3 Chaos ogres with great weapons, chaos armour and marks of Tzeentch (this is brilliant, an iron gut but for 2 points more you get a 6+ ward save, a 4+ armour save and the ability to reroll panic!)
Giant
I think that was everything. Although in hindsight, I think I will swap out the combat exalted and downgrade the sorceror lord to just have 2 more sorceros, that way I can potentially squeexe a fourth unit of ogres in.
Just as the original change eaters were an ogre kingdoms army themed around chaos, the new batch will be a chaos army themed around ogres, with the marauder horsemen being chaos hounds ridder by chaos gnoblars (gnoblar heads, ghoul bodies, makes a beefy twisted gnoblar pretty well!) and the ogres being built from iron guts to resemble the plastic chaos warriors/change golem as closely as possible, although any flesh visible on their arms will be painted in human flesh tones for some contrast to all the blue!
I've built a test model and am halfway through painting it, but am not all that happy. I'll post some pics of the WIP tonight, but at the moment, I'm deciding he needs thigh armour, kneepads, chaos style boots and possibly a cape. I'm also not pleased with the gold trim I've added to the blue armour, It's just not working for me, so I'm going to go for no trim, and break up all the flat pannels by sculpting on some wailing faces or twisting shapes, and add some glowing runes to any remaining panels.
I've got a little over 4 months to get all this ready, less if I want to add a display board to the army too, which is looking likely as looking nice is basically all the army will be good for.
And on the plus side, when it's all over, I'll be well on the way to having my new ogre army ready for our relaunch!

sounds like you've made a firm start to the army Corai! I'll look forward to the WIP pics when you can.
I like the idea of the 4th ogre unit in the army, mainly for the symmetrical layout you could achive when displaying the army.
I hope you're going to do something special with that disc and the BSB as they will probably be the centrepieces of the force

YAY!!! That'd be great!! you could use the long drong slayers as gnoblars too
I was tempted to do the ninja army as a load of empty bases though - that way they'd be like real ninjas Not sure I'd make it past tournament rules though....

What about a whole lot of long grass, and reeds, and little shrubs. Each unit could have a different theme to the hiding place, and just have the odd hand, or the edge of a robe slightly visible. It would be like a moving piece of scenery, the enemy would never see your ninjas. Of course, the opponent would never be able to tell what they were actually supposed to be either.
Back on topic, I think an entire pirate army could be awesome. Include some captured women, or some stolen treasure as unit fillers, and you could make it look like they were in the middle of raiding a town.
Lots of opportunities with drunken models too.

My store manager did similar for his doubles army - something FF has seen IRL. He used the pirate head from the maneater a lot and gave a few ogres peg legs too. He got lots of gutplates with pistols on them too. Basing looked like the boards of a ship - treasure chest objective marker - all rather nice. I'll see if I can get some pics.
He teamed with a lustrian ogre force (leabelchers holding salamanders) and got nominated for a best army there.

I was thinking a similar fluffy army to your own list,
heavy on the pistol toting maneaters, with the pirate motif increasing as you go up the ranks Gnoblars - parrots and general mischief causers bulls - deck hands/swabs - the odd stripey t shirt, cutlasses instead of clubs, spotty hankerchiefs on their heads etc Iron Guts - hardened rogues - as above but with a few pistols thrown in and the occasional hook or pegleg Maneaters - proper pirates including coats, wigs and hats, festooned with pistols aplently Butchers - ship cooks and bosuns BSB - wielding a ship mast complete with jolly roger Tyrant - the Cap'n of course!
It would be a drastically differant army to what I'm sued to both with style and play, but it could be fun.
might be poll time!

gotta go fluffy with something like this I think.
It'd be more difficult to go for the best-paited I think - just because armies with such a strong and slightly tounge-in-cheek theme have that against them - but look at it this way:
a ninja vs. pirate deathmatch - with ogres!

You make a pursuasive point. It would hamper my attempts to be nominated for a best army award, but I can't help thinking it would be insanely fun to both build and play (espescially against the ninjas) and I'm sure a pirate Vs ninjas grudge match game in the gaming hall on the saturday night would draw quite a crowd!
Gives me the potential for a nice shipwreck display board too.
It certainly wouldn't be the most competative army around, but ogres aren't really anyway
It is difficult to give up the chaos though, I'm just finding it quite a hard slog trying to get my ideas sorted!

Pirates done well enough will get a best army nom I believe. I just think it might be harder for them. Still though, you get the banner to play with, the lookout gnoblars, teh cannons for the leadbelchers - I can't really see any wrong here, the whoile idea reeks of awesome!!
one thing though - if you go through with it, I'd almost feel compelled to use the ninjas too rather than the dirty daemons.
I guess I could use the daemons and bring the ninjogres along just for the deathmatch though....so don't mind my ranbling.

And yet, Ironically, despite having set up a poll to find out which I should use, Im now thinking on an entirely different 3rd option!
TBH, I think the 3rd option is what Ill end up going for (but thanks to everyone for their suggestions and comments, despite the potential futility of them). What about the change eaters as an actual ogre kingdoms army? I think part of the problem I was having with them was the fact that Im just wholly unexcited by the new WoC book, but I still love ogres. All I have to do is swap out the marauder horsemen for some bulls and gnoblar fighters and add a tyrant.
This has an added advantage for my bid for best army thanks to the following: The fighters will be a ranked unit with a diorama unit filler in each, which really seems to help when looking at the armyness of a best army potential
The tyrant (with long strider) allows me to follow through on a conversion idea I had originally for the chaos versions, using the body of a FW rhinox rider, cut in half and repositioned to be rearing up, then turning into a soulgrinder upperbody as a sort of ogre-shaggoth thing.
Plus I can still add the fire giant thingee and the BSB with big freehand flag of doom
Any thoughts?
Thanks Corai

so the change eaters will ride again, eh? I always figured they'd be back - but I will miss the pirates idea if you decide against it (sniff!).
The tyrant coversion sounds great if you can pull it off - it'd be a great centerpiece to the army - but remember, its still got to go on a 40mm base - and that's going to be tough to:
a) rank up with anything b) be moved into comabt with anything c) balance!

I had given that some thought. My plans are:
a) rank up with anything
as it will only be the hind two legs of the shaggoth on the bas, with the front two up in the air, fitting it onto the base shouldn't be too hard, and with the extra ehigh gained by having a rhinox for a lwoer body, the upper body should be well above a rank and file ogre. Assuming I don't just run him seperatley becasue it looks nicer!
b) be moved into comabt with anything
That's really more of my opponents problem In all seriousness, models coming too far off the front of a base has always been an issue for my guys, but it's not too hard to twist him where necessary to accomodate
c) balance!
all plastic/resin coupled with a base made from sheet metal cut into a 40mm square will hopefuly sort this!

Ive been giving some thought to a list to field at the GT. Its not the most effective OK list out there, but it ticks all my boxes for prettiness when displayed!
Ive erred on the side of caution for the BSB. Id prefer to give him giant breaker and a great weapon, but am waiting for a reply from GW regarding whether the BSB can take other magic equipment or not at the final)
That totals out so far at 1840 points. But what do I add for the remaining 160 points? Im quite happy with the balance so far, with a roughly symmetrical army, with a unit of iron guts, the characters and the giant to fill the gap in the middle and unite it as one army instead of 2 halves. I thought about adding a second slavegiant (and dropping the thiefstone to afford it), but this may take away from the centerpiece-ness of the first. Plus, my giant is going to be pretty pricey anyway, being based off a FW avatar, Im not sure I can run to another one. Another option is some more ironguts, but this would eman that a)I have to build and paint some more iron guts (duh) which seems a little daunting in the timescale, b) I have a unit which I cant build out of a single battalion and the models I have spare and c) I risk being back in the basically divided army with no unit to bridge the gap between the two halves.
Any suggestions for how to fill 160 points?
Thanks Corai

You know I am not a fan of BSBs, so the army, all-around is not my type, but, gor those 160 pts, I would get a second slavegiant, leaving out the 2 musos from the bull units.
You also know how much I don't like slavegiants, but these, in couples (Mr and MRs giant, anyone? -@ Wildcard, this is a job for your wierd ogres!!!) actually do something, instead of just getting killed.

I completely agree with your opinions of BSBs, they don't really fit my style either, but there is an oopurtunity for a nice big freehand banner there which I don't intend to pass up
The second giant is a possibility. I had originally ruled it out based on the fact it would require me to buy a second Forgeworld Avatar, but as I think about what I'd add in it's place, there's not much in it money wise.
At the moment I think I've got it narrowed down to 4 possibilities:
- A third unit of bulls and a 3rd unit of gnoblar fighter. On the plsus side this gives me more models in the display for a real 'army' feel and adds a third ranked infantry unit to include a unit filler in and make the army not look just like a bunch of monsters. It would also gell with my playstyle more as the additional bulls can go someway to filling the roll I'd normally allocate to yhetees
- A 2nd slavegiant. As Ikim said, running them in tandem can help to mitigate the rubbishness of a slavegiant. I also had a lot of success using the treemen at the Heat to tempt people off objectives and tie up units to stop them from getting where they needed to be. This would, of course, be a lot more difficult without stubborn or the added utility of starngleroot. Financially, this option is slightly cheaper than the above, and requires less time to model and paint, but does 2 giants take away from the centrepiece feel of one, or add to it?
- Maneaters. Either a single great-weapon-wielding-loony for chariot hunting (plus some assorted extra stuff in the rest of the army) or a pair of maneaters (loosing some command options or thiefstones etc) with handguns and/or great weapons to threaten flanks etc. My conern here is that, like the giant, a single maneater is easy to kill and gives up 3 kill points in the total annihalation scenario!
- Scrap Launcher. It's not like I've filled any of my cspecial slots already. I'm thinking some kind og combination of the FW rhinox rider and the hellcannon. Not sure I can make this onew ork visually though, and being the only chariot based moel in the army, I'm struggling to find somewhere to slot it into the display.
Any thoughts on these possibilities?
Thanks Corai

Of those options, I'd go for the extra bull and gnoblar unit - you'll have enough centerpiec models alreadya nd you don't eant it to look like a few big models being supported by a flimy few units.
going for the extra units will make it more of an "army" and give you a 3rd unit to add a filler to as well.

It all depends upon what you want to achieve: -if you want a center piece, 2 giants, modelled as being in a diorama gives a great center piece: a lot better than one, and I know you can achieve, without any touble, that interaction between them;
-if you want to give more of an "army feeling", more ogres, but not the bulls: in this case I would go for the old and trustworthy IGs.

time for something of a progress report I feel. As I was so happy with the speed and look of the resin bases on my forest spirit army, I wanted to do the same for the new change eaters. Unfortunatley, there's not really anything out on the market which fits the bill for me, so I'm endeavouring to make some of my own.
After a few minor disasters, I might, potentially, slightly possibly onto a winner as far as a master design goes. It needs some filing, texturing and a few more GS details adding tomorrow, but if the actual base turns out okay, I'm actually going to have a stab at casting it up in resin to reproduce. Assuming this works, I should be able to get some bases sorted in the near future, which means I can actually start on assembling and painting some units!

If you need any insight, ask up: I would gladly help on this.
Casting something like a base is quite easy, as you only need a one-way mould, ni which you just pour the resin, without having to make a complex two-way mould with air vents and such.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Thanks for the support guys, but I've had to abandon the idea of casting the abses. After making some test ones and trying to cast them myself, I spoke with a couple of folk at our club who cast and sell bases via websites, and they confirmed, the designs I've built up just won't cast properly. So, rather than compromise my initial idea, I'm just going to bite the bullet and make enough of themfrom scratch. I'll get some pics of the test ones up ovwer the weekend, and when I do you'll realise just how much cork is going to be covering my floor by the end of the project!
As the bases and minis on them will all require a lot of drying time in between GS layers I'm going to be working on a few things at a time, with the ultimate goal being to get everything assembled/sculpted/based etc and then move on with the painting of them from there.
Is it hard to do?
Yes!
Much kit/expense needed?
Not much kit is needed. Basically you need a 2 part mold making rubber, a 2 part resin, some plastic cups, rubber gloves and a can of mold release aerosol. In the long run, it's not that expensive and you can pick up decent starter deals from a lot of websites
What are you making the moulds from?
I was trying to make them from RTV sillicone rubber, but as mentioned above, have had to abandon the resin bases. I may well try and cast some of the things I'll be using a lot on the army, like the fur shoulder pieces etc, though

how did you get the bull right arm to fit the shoulder joint? How much is covered up by the "fur" collar?

The abacus was just Gs'd over. The bull right arm had the V shaped muscles (which normally overlap the back of the ogre) cut off so the arm had an almost flat join, and was pinned into place. I sculpted in any missing musculature and covered up any dodgy joins with the fur

23rd October 2008 Right, I think this gnoblog is wel overdue a picture update. After last weeks failed attempt at casting some resin bases, and the week before's failed attempt at producing a test irongut mini, I was starting to loose heart with the change eaters a little, but I'm happy to say 2 solid days of converting has produced my first unit of bulls (well, got them to a stage where they're ready for paint anyway), and I'm pretty happy with them:
For starters, here's a quick WIP photo of the test mini I tried a couple of weeks ago. obviously there's lots of unifinshed areas, but I'm happy witht he blue and skin tone so will be caryring them over to the actual army. The gold isn't realy working for mee so I'm going to go back to a beaten, rusty silver in the same vein as the original change eaters, for the trim.
And now ono the bulls themselves. As you can see, the base design has changed somewhat, getting a bit more feasible for ranking up, involving seveal broken stone tablts instead of one large one, and incorporating some vines, leaves and clump foliage. Eventually they'll get some snow too. I'm still undecided as to whether to add some plastic branches to the back of the abse, any thoughts on this?
The ogres themselves have had their legs widened since the test mini, and more thought given to how the head, neck and gorget would fit togeher. I've also used a differant technique to my norm for producing the fur trim, and I'm really happy with the results. All that remains on these guys is to file and sharpen the brown stuff trim details when it cures, and possibley add some bracnhes
A better view of what's going on withthe bases. All the runes are copied from the Liber chaotica:Tzeentch and will be glowing with bue light in the paintjob
I was planning to build the whole army before painting anyting, but I tink thse guys shoud really get some paint asap so I can see what the conversions look like finished, before rushing into a boat load more! The iron guts will get more elaborate armour, with more time details, and maybe some writing faces!
Any coments on the bulls are appreciated
On a list note, I think I've decided to go with a couple of maneaters. Thy may be a poor option for the tourney but they give me the oppurtunity to take my irongut conversions even further into the chaos detail realm, plus they involve the leat amount of models extra needed (aside from the giant which would wind up taking longer anyway!) The only problem is, I've neber fielded maneaters before. As they have to run in a unit of 2, what weapon set up would you guys recommend? I'm leaning towards braces of pistols becasue it owuld give me some shooting in the army, if only a little, but I can't help thinking all those S7 attacks from greatweapons would work wonders agaisnt all the chariots and waraltars out there!
Thanks Corai

hey! these look great, you did an amazing job on them. they resemble the chaos warrior extreamly closely, of the bulls I like the one in the middle the most he looks very menacing with the position of his helmet and the skulls on his armor. Keep up the spectacular work!

It might be just the angle of the pic Corai, but the irongut weapon looks a little weedy and thin - I think it needs beefing up a bit.
I agree that the silver will look better than the gold.
question: What recipie did you use for the skintone??
The fur trim and armour plates are looking great
one other question: In your original tyrant model, he was a golem, hence the tiny (in comparison) head. If you're doing a skintone on these (so, presumably, non-golems) what's teh fluff reasoning behind the smaller heads?

Thanks guys. The iron gut weapon is a little weedy, but I didnt want to use any of the good parts on a test mini
question: What recipie did you use for the skintone??
IIRC, it was: -Basecoat tallarn flesh -wash ogryn flesh -highlight tallarn -highlight tallarn:elf 1:1 -highlight elf -highlight elf:bleached bone 1:1
Ill check my notes later tonight though and confirm

Um change?... In reality, theyre based off the artwork of a chaos ogre that Adrian Smith did in the road to the storm of chaos artbook. Im working on some fluff for the new aesthetic at the moment and Ill try and work in an explanation!
Thanks Corai

The weedy weapon is the first thing I noticed, but you seem to have that covered. I like the look of the irongut, but it needs bling like the bulls have- I know it's just the test mini but this way you know what works and doesn't. As to the bulls. They look very good, and I am very impressed. But they have an almost human look to them. Something you did with the neck and shoulder work between the irongut and the bulls extended their neck, reduced the hunched overness, and blurred the line between ogre and human build. Certainly they are still ogre size, and they are mutated after all, but it's just something I feel when I look at the models. But it is weird. Looking at the irongut and the bulls I can't pinpoint what the real problem is (I don't know if I can even find where you built it differently), so maybe it is just the pose/photo.

It may well be a product of the photo you're seeing Reg. The necks were built in the same way on the test minis and the bulls, but the photo of the bulls is slightly from below (you can just see the lip of the shelf I put them on for a quick pic, so this may be contributing to the lack of hunchedness we're seeing. the more human look ,ight be coming from the lengthened legs though. I guess with diffeat proportions, and only the arms really still fully visible beneath the GS, these guys run the risk of not looking too ogrey at all
Thanks Corai

I don't know whether it is present in the models or not, but in the pictures the shoulders seem to come from slightly lower down on the neck region on the bull models. It may well just be the photos, but it seems that the neck/head are more depressed into the body for the IG, and I think this may be what give the slightly less human feel.

Thanks to a bout with food poisoning and a relative's 21st Birthday, I've got virtually nothing done on these guys this week (and the tourney deadline is starting to seem closer and closer). Basically all I've chieved so far is to get the models undercoated, which, I'm pleased to report looks pretty unified: I'm always worried when a WIP odel is part white, grey, a differant grey, green and brown, then when it's all undercoated te same colour, it will be obvious whicch bits shouldn't fit, but pretty much everythinglooks like it ought to be where it is. as Soon as I get a free evening I'm going to crack on with painting them, as I can't wait to get a unit finished for the army, I'm hoping that will give me the impetus I need to get the rest of them churning off the production line
thanks Corai

progress!
I've actually started painting the bulls. So far the armour, skin, trousers and loincloths are done. I'm having some trouble sorting out a boot colour, as my old yellow/brown approach is looking too warm in a palette otherwise filled with cold colours. After that there's just the abses and metals to do and I should be ready for some pics
On a side note, I'm being tempted away from the big boys yet again (!!). Despite my plans to the contrary, the new WoC book has lured me in with mpromises of an archaon lead knightly order undivided force. I'll throw a list up for some criticism in the armies board. I'm not sure at the moment whether to proceed with the chaos before or after the ogres. It's now looking like I may not get the ogres done in time (but I won't rush them for it) for the GT final, but I'm fairly certain I can get the chaos done. That being said, I'm not sure the chaos army would garner any best army nominations due to the smallness and lack of anything diswcernable as an army!
Thanks Corai

Corai - you won a best painted award with a 5 model force - I don't think your last argument can hold water

So, finally, an update. It's taken me a few weeks to get these guys finished as a bunch of real life stuff ahs prevented me from sitting down and having any really long painting sessions in that time. Nevertheless, I have finally got the first unit of bulls painted for the army! Looking at these, I also think the bases need a little adjustment on the future models, with a few more areas of sand textured earth around all the rocks. I also need to pay more attention to where models feet will be going as most of the work done to carve runes into the rocks has een hidden beneth them
Thanks Corai

I saw these over on the warhammer forum. Looking great Corai - good to see you back with blue again.
I agree on the bases though, they look a little plain at the moment. If you could make teh runes "pop" alittle more (blue glow maybe?) then I think that'd help them.

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.
And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.

Something about the weapons seems a bit off to me. Maybe they just look odd in this context.

Excellent work Corai. The blue is, as always, great, but it seems duller than I remember the tyrant being. Could we get a close up of the gnoblar? It looks cool from what I can see, but I can't make out what is going on. Wings?
