Ogre skin colour?

original thread ↗

Just wondering- has there ever been an official explanation why the skin colour of ogres changed from grey to normal skin tone last year?
I had a look in the WD from last year when the new ogres came out, but it didnt give any explanation.
I personally am very happy with the change- I never liked the grey skin and it put me off starting an ogre army,
but with the new models coming out and painted in the new way, I like them much better.
My ogres are grey/brown and I love it!
My scheme is a 50/50 mix of graveyard earth and codex grey as a base coat then I devlan mud it up and add a fat highlight(so I just coat the raise areas) with the original colour mixed at 60/40 with bleached bone.

I get lots of wraps at games events for having "cool ogres".

(I still don't think I'm much of a painter.)

Anyway I don't like "human ogres" because they're ogres, not humans! They have their own Identity and colour.

For me, Ogres will always have rock grey skin. Like they did when Bulls were Bulls, Cathayen very long swords were "in", and our casters were Loremasters.

Those 3 things should never have changed. I wish longswords were still in, even if it was as a magic item something like +1 attack, +2 WS and +3I that would be cool. Tyrants would have 6 attacks at WS 8 and initiative 6. Also WHY DID THEY NERF MAWSEEKER  I think I cried when I saw that. C'mon 25pts is fair, 30 is OK...40 is stupid, but giant breaker is good now though I think it should be 10pts less if you have a giant in your army.

And the bangstick...should have kept the bangstick.

To me, Ogres should have the grey colored skin. I love the rocky style hide that the grey portrays. I use the grey on my ogres. It's a mix of Codex Grey and Commando Khaki. I also put white face paint on my models and feel it really stands out vs. a fleshy skin like humans have. I'm strongly debating changing the skin tone of my Rhinox from the fleshy skin to a grey. Just my two cents.

I went with an olive grey skin as seen on the old kit boxes.  What bothers me isn't so much the color change, but the fact that they re-colored all the old artwork in the new book.  Reminds me of a Ted Turner colorized black and white movie where they didn't quite get things right.

The only thin i really miss in the change from old to new is the lack of the cathayan long sword.  That thing was BOSS!!! 8)

We lost loremaster because we recieved access to 4 new lores, I'm happy with that.  Personally I like the new skin tone more than the old one, but to each his own I suppose.
There is only news.  There is no good or bad.
I prefer the more "human" skintones. Everything from really pale to a ruddy tan looks good in my opinion :) Grey looks alright, but I'm not fan of blue ogres etc :P
I like 'em brown, not grey...

...but normal skin tone is just wrong.

My ogres go from a grey base to a bluey grey shade.  The main reason I went this way is because I didn't want frost giants as such.  What I wanted was ogres that live on the lower slopes of mountains.

the scheme I used was: Undercoat:  Normal black spray.
                                       Base:   Adeptus Battle grey.
1st Layer  Adeptus Battle grey  2/1  Astronomican grey.
2nd Layer  as above with 1 part Ice blue.
Final Layer  as above again but 2 parts ice blue instead.

Bear in mind these are the old paint names from the GW range I don't know their equivalents yet.

There are pics in my Gnoblog.  Link is under my avatar.

Either way I think you just paint your ogres as you would like them really.  It could depend on the back ground you give them (hot or cold regions of were they live for instance).  Go with what you like at the end of the day  :)

Don't like the grey, never did.
Brimstone's old army was Olive green/Grey skin and it's now dark human tones. Looks much better to my eyes.

And historically while O.K.s were always grey, weren't the Blood Bowl Ogres always flesh coloured? And come to think about it, weren't the Dog's of War Ogres also flesh? There's an anomaly right there from the start! :D

Mine are now Tallarn Flesh base, Ogryn Wash and Tallarn flesh highlight. = Done!
And with a spot Devlan Mud wash on the face to "downlight" the features the jobs complete! :D

I'm not sure why ogres would be blueish from living in the cold. Living in cold countries doesn't turn your skin color blue. A quick look at people living in Scandinavia/Russia confirms this :D

I sure that is true for humans.  But remember this is Warhammer fantasy.  With have mythical creatures, orcs with green skin.  Such creatures may not react they same way to elements as humans.  :D

Another example is to think about moths for instance!  They come in different colours to better camouflage them selves from predators.  There are certainly enough mountains predators in the mountains were the ogres reside.  Just a few things to think about.

Also it doesnt have to be brilliant blue, a light blue grey is perfectly reasonable.

Also WTF Zolas! how is your game record so poor! are you playing with the old rules or something. :D

Good question!  its mainly because I have not had my mournfang up and running, but also alot of those games was against a chaos dwarf army, (the new forge would rules) which is a little take the mick.  Alot of multiple wound artillery with added leadership checks after suffering 1 wound or 1 casualty.  It's not a very nice army to fight when using ogres.

Other then that is just bad luck.

I really got to get some more games in to be honest haven't had much time on my hands lately.  :(

Yeah I have the throne of chaos book and the big hats are nasty. The flame cannon, death shrieker, dreadquake, hell cannon, T6 bsb, k'daai destroyer and the bull centaurs are pretty scarey.

Indeed there not much in the army list that isn't scary.  Not going to really play against those chaos dwarfs tbh much see what I can do against more regular armies.

Anyways apologies for hijacking the thread.

BACK to ogre skin colour.  What other skin colours have other generals used for their ogres?

Well, if we're going to talk evolution in WH, then we might as well acknowledge that evolution takes thousands, hundreds of thousands, if not millions of years in some situations; however, ogres lived in lush green pastures for far longer than the hundreds of years in the mountains of mourn.  But I digress.

Personally, I've made my ogres a mix of skin tones (Human: light, tan, brown, dark brown, etc., etc.) since they were first released (someday I'll have to upload some pictures...).  Never liked the grey tones; and while ogres may not be humans, I've always seen them as psuedo-human.  Besides, I think it looks better.  For those that like the grey, more power to you; it's just not for me.

Only examples is my intention.  There are many possibilities.  Things like magic or chaos mutation as well are thing to consider.  Close proximity to chaos dwarfs and chaos lands in general could change ogre appearance or even skin colour.  There are more then enough chaos themed ogre armies running around.  :D

Still each to their own at the end of the day.  The point of the examples was just to broaden choices that are available and to high light possibilities that may not have been considered by players.  Just trying to help.   8)

As far as I remembers, them grey Ogres from the 6th ed army book were more the anomaly than their earlier cousins with skin in various humanoid skintones.

Maybe the grey skin could be explained by the Ogres from the kingdoms covering themselves in rancid fat against the cold.

I wouldn't think that many people would like the flesh-colored version but, as several stated before, to each their own! I will still follow the older book ways as a throw back of sorts. I think the skin tone is amazing. Something about the grey sets the army apart from the fleshes of the empire/elf kingdoms. I mean who wants to be the same color as an elf!?
