starwoof's Ogres (Updated May 26, Tyrant WIP)

original thread ↗

I haven't played fantasy in a few years, my time instead being dedicated to Warmachine, 40k, and League of Legends. I'm just getting back into it, this time with ogres as I was dead sick of my Night Goblins. My tribe doesn't have a name or concrete theme yet. I'm thinking of calling it the Sundered Summit or Suneater tribe, but I dunno.

So far all I have are two mournfangs. I'm taking my time with them as I'm no rush to get them finished. I don't go for realism, I like very stark highlights that really POP on the table.

These pictures are a little washed out and it's difficult to tell the difference between the fur underneath and the fur on top. I'll try to get some better pics when I update next. Here's how I painted the fur:

1. Black Basecoat
2. Paint all the fur Shadow Grey
3. Dybrush Codex Grey all over
4. Highlight the fur on their underside with Skull White
5. Asurmen Blue wash
6. Drybrush the shoulders, top of the neck, and the top of their haunches with Adeptus Battlegrey
7. Asurmen Blue Wash
8. Repeat step 6, but only on the very top
8. Asurmen Blue wash
9. Highlight the individual hairs with Shadow Grey

The skin is just Adeptus Battlegrey with a Badab Black wash right now. I'm going to do something to it to bring the color up and maybe add a bit of warmth. When I finish these two I'll start working on the riders, but I'm not sure how I want to paint them. I can't think of anything I like for their pants and skin color. I think I want to use orange somehow, either as warpaint or pants.

Any thoughts are appreciated! Cheers.
Cheers.
Cool looking mournfang and thanks for posting how to paint it. Can't wait for more!

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
I'm glad you like them! I've done a bit more work and I'm pretty happy with the results. They aren't finished yet, I still think I'm going to try a bit of rust and some touch-ups.

I've also settled on a skin tone I like for my ogres. It's pretty basic but also properly dirty and should take to tattoos well.

My method for this skin tone is:
1. Basecoat of Vermin Brown
2. Paint the muscles with Dwarf Flesh, leaving the cracks vermin brown
3. Paint the muscles with Elf Flesh, leaving a bit of dwarf flesh showing around the edges
4. Wash with Ogryn Flesh

I tend to use ogryn flesh a lot because it's a miracle liquid that makes my models go from meh to sick! There isn't a single color I wouldn't consider washing with ogryn flesh if I thought it would achieve the desired results!

Comments and criticism appreciated. Cheers.
Cheers.
Nice horned helmet on the ogre. I would like to suggest though that you put a final highlight on the skin to bring some more ealism to the skin. Overall I do like the skin.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
I'm glad you like the skin. I do think some highlights are in order, especially on the forearms and scars. I just need to be careful that I don't compromise how dirty they look.

I forgot to mention, I'm building my ogre army for an escalation league at my local GW. My 500 point list is as such:

Bruiser - 125
Sword of Striking, Potion of Speed

Ogre Bulls - 222
5x Ironfist
Full Command

Mournfangs - 160
2x Ironfists, Heavy Armor
Champion

TOTAL - 497
Cheers.
I wouldn't recomend taking mournfang in a unit less than 3 because they will die off quickly. IMHO would take some leadbelchers, a scraplauncher or a ironblaster to make up for the lack of magic.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Well I have to take the mournfangs as I cant afford anything else. I'm pretty happy with my list even though it doesn't have any magic or ranged attacks. I'm thinking of swapping out the bruiser for a caster, though I don't think that a level 1 is worth trading for the leadership and combat ability of the bruiser. When I move the list up to 1k I'm adding a caster for sure.

I hate the leadbelcher and ironblaster models and I won't use them until I figure out a way to convert them.
Cheers.
You should check out the Alternative Ogre Mega thread it has a bunch of models you can use intead of GW ones.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
I still don't know what to do about the ironblaster. That cannon defies my suspension of disbelief; it has to weigh at least 30 tons.

I went down to my GW store to get some pictures in good lighting. The light isn't that great but the pictures are decent anyway. I'm still not done. I need to highlight the skin a little, chip the bloody heck out of the armor, finish rusting, and decide on a color for my Crusher's beard. I'm thinking blond. I've got a few other details I've forgotten to mention as well but I'll get to those eventually.

Cheers. Comments and criticism appreciated as always.
Cheers.
These look great!  I particularly like the fur on the mournfangs and the two huge horns (tusks?) on the helmet of the one ogre.  Keep up the good work!
Thanks! He's wearing them like horns but I guess they're technically tusks. I'm gonna mount some tusks as tusks on someone else's helmet; thanks for the idea! :3

I'm almost done painting these guys now. Rust is so much fun to paint. My method is pretty simple:

Stipple Vermin Brown
Stipple Blazing Orange
Wash Ogryn Flesh
Highlight the raised areas where rust has chipped off with Mithril Silver

I've also chipped up their armor and it looks great. Well, I think so anyway. I'll snap some pictures when the light is right, probably tomorrow.

Cheers!
Cheers.
Well I'm just about done. I might tweak their skin a little and add some tattoos, but I'm pretty much finished with these guys. I also remembered how to use my camera to take good pictures. :D

Well, here's a ton of pictures.

I'm picking up a box of bulls this weekend. I'll convert one into a bruiser. I'm really looking forward to it! I'll post pics of them as I go, as usual. Cheers.
Cheers.
Its looking great especialy the mournfang fur , just a quick question how did you paint the mournfang tusks ?
we are da executors for a reason you stand in our way ... you die hahaha
Thanks! The tusks are really easy:

Paint the entire tusk Graveyard Earth.
Paint the entire tusk Commando Khaki. It doesn't matter if it covers all of the Graveyard Earth, as long as most of the tusk is covered.
Wash with Ogryn Flesh.

It's really simple, I almost feel lazy for doing it. :)
Cheers.
Thanks :)

I am really digging the blue fur. Keep up the good work!

I fought the Maw and the... Maw won
Awesome armour its a unique approach to it.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
I really like the armor and the Mourfangs.... great job! I really like the blue color on the Mourfangs.

I'm really glad everyone likes the blue mournfangs. I took a few risks and did some stuff I've never done before and it turned out nice. I dunno what color I'm gonna do my stonehorn and my sabertusks, which will actually be fenrisian wolves, but certainly not blue.

For the armor I was inspired by the Evil Sunz ork klan from 40k. Like everything I do it's simpler than it looks.

- Scab Red basecoat
- Red Gore
- Baal Red Wash, this gives it the 'lacquered' texture

For the chips I painted jaggy triangles and edges with Chaos Black. After that I painted boltgun metal over the black, leaving a black edge. Easy!

Cheers guys! I'm super stoked to get the next part of my army on friday. I'll post pics as soon as I finish converting them.

Thanks for sharing this with me! LOL, I have gotten little bits and pieces from each thread on here to help with my Ogres.

Really excited to see them also! Thanks!

Nice to learn a paint job is simple yet great looking.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
Ogres! Here's my bruiser. For now anyway. I'll probably demote him to irongut champion when I get a bigger army. I call him "Scudge the Collector". Guess what he collects? I think I need to do some GS work on him before I get painting.

Bulls! The fluff behind my army is that they are very well funded and militaristic. They have a good bit of quality gear and are often on the march thanks to their warlike Tyrant. They are in the old world looking for dwarven treasure that they learned about from a returning maneater. I'm writing up a story about it that I'm posting on my home forum. I might post it here as well.

I need to think of something to stick on the banner. My tribe is named Warchomper. I don't want a generic maw image, and I don't want just my tribe's symbol. I really have nothing. I love freehanding though. Thoughts?

Cheers.
Cheers.
Nice bruiser it looks orcish though but cool none the less.

Keep Calm and Praise the Sun!
I reckon he used to do mercenary work for some black orcs or something. :D
Cheers.
I love your paint job on the armor. Great strong color!
I also like your bruiser-
fits in with the traveling and mercenary background.

I'm glad you like it. I'm really excited for the point when I convert my tyrant. I'm going to sculpt a suit of half plate on him so he'll be this big red dude in the center of my army. Should be sweeeeet.

I've almost got the first few stages of paint on my bulls, so I'll post up pics of them. I'll be giving them some tattoos to help mark their unit and cover up where I derfed their skin color. :P

Cheers.
Cheers.
I've been working on my ogres a bit, but mostly I've been trying to think of a symbol for my tribe! Well, I've decided on this:

I hope you like it. Cheers.
Cheers.
Like it!
Very "Blood Maw" looking! :D

HG
Very nice banner. I really like it.  :)

Great Banner!  :D
Thanks for the kind words on my banner everyone! I am really happy with it! I'm gonna use this as my army's symbol, but I'll be making some changes to it for other unit's banners. For axample, my irongut's banner may have some gold/iron fillings in it!  :D

I really really love freehanding! It is the most fun thing ever. I need to get more banners...
Cheers.
I have hit the jackpot! Today I picked up all of this for $100!

Finecast Tyrant
6 bulls
6 guts
4 leadies
assorted banners
A thundertusk
Ogre Book

Friggin awesome! All assembled, unprimed, unpainted, and ALL THE BITS. I'm converting the tyrant now. Expect pics soon!

EDIT: Tyrant Grud wip.

Cheers.
Cheers.
very nice looking tyrant....i love the tundertusk shoulder pad as a shield.
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Thanks! I'm really excited to paint him! I think I'm finished converting him. Now is the time for suggestions.

Cheers.
Cheers.
Where did you get that shield? Thanks!

I believe it's one of the 'shoulder pads' from the thundertusk/stonehorn kit

~FS
That is precisely what it is.
Cheers.
Hey, it's been a while... sorry. I've been pretty busy with life/other projects and haven't really touched my ogres until yesterday. Well, I made a BsB and started on a heavens butcher. I can do 2k now! Huzzah!

And the butcher so far.

I'm putting the big tenderizer hammer on his weapon and giving him a skullcap head. I hope you like them!

Cheers.
Cheers.
I love your conversion work so far; the butcher and standard bearer banner both being particularly impressive! One small thing I would say though, is that if you are still able, I would perhaps smooth out the back of the tyrant, as the present green stuff layer may present aesthetic issues once it comes to painting. A thin layer of liquid green stuff, and it would smooth out the existing work done. Keep up the great work, and I can't wait to see your next update :)

After all, painting 100 night goblins is something you do in the morning just before you are off to work.

And I think you missed a 0 when you wrote 11 armies. The correct nr should be 110 armies I would think, based on your painting speed.
I think I need to go a little further than that; my tyrant needs something on his back, like a banner or cape or something.
Cheers.
I think a cape would look pretty awesome :) That said, I have done the banner thing, and that looks pretty rad too :)

Really like the heavens butcher so far with the kiss the ring thing going on.  Look farward to seeing him completed.
