So finally I decided on starting a new WH fantasy army!
So far I have Empire, Dogs of War and Dark Elves.
I want to do something different- and played with the idea of skaven for a long while.
Sadly I dont really have the time (and patience!) to paint up millions of the little buggers...
So I thought about shooty ogres!

I really like the Ogre Ironblaster model with the rhino and the Stone Age feel of the army.
In addition, I was looking for a real change in my play style to spice up my motivation again.
So instead of a lot of infantry and cavalry as in my other armies
(or the traditional empire gun line, where I just sit back and wait for them to come...)
I am looking for a shooty ogre army!:D
Being able to deal death from afar but also being able to strike hard in close combat--
Sounds like a great way of change in my play style!:D

I thought I start out with a Batallion box, 2 Ironblasters, a Tyrant and a Firebelly (for magic),
and maybe some extra boxes of bulls and Ironguts.
The gnoblars that come in the boxes as extras I will use for an additional unit of gnoblars.

From another project I already have a unit of Leadbelchers which I just based and need to be painted in the new colours.
As a paint scheme I am thinking of something similar to the ogre army in the March White Dwarf.
But I am not sure yet if I should go with bright warm colored clothing or more like icy blue...
I would love to give them a "Ice and Fire" theme- so bright colours and flames and flame tattoos,
and based on ice and snow bases (similar to the lichen and snow bases I made for my INFINITY armies).

These guys need to be re-painted:

Camp Fire unit filler (WIP)

gnoblars (WIP)

ogres (WIP)

And here are some of my INFINITY miniatures on the snow bases (for which I mix PVA with snow flock and sparkly kids paint):

Yay, the first load of my new shinies arrived today!:D
Some bases and borders for movement trays as well as some bits (mainly handguns and pistols for shooty maneater conversions).

I also got three metal sabertooth tigers from Reaper. Yes, they are smaller than the Sabertusks, but I like the models, and for just 8$US for one, they are a steal!

I also got my tyrant now, thanks to another ogre player who sold his second one.
Its finecast, and for all the complaints about finecast, it is actually good quality.

So here are the first humble beginnings of the army...

Hope next week some more boxes, my army book and the batallion arrive.
And I also ordered some additional models from Reaper...
Some progress-
I finished the movement trays as well as the sabertooth tigers.
The bases give a good impression of what I am aiming for with my ice and snow theme.
And the ice blue on the bases- I try to make it look like they are marching over a frozen river/lake.
In the sunshine. Thats why the ice and snow is all sparkling. :D
Maybe not the savest of activities if you (as an ogre) play with fire....:p

The fire is a unit filler for my gnoblar horde- I will add some funny gnoblars to it later.

Good stuff! Looking forward to seeing more.  8)
Some progress over the weekend :D.
Finished some models and base-coated some conversions.

Reaper terror birds/ axe beaks as sabertusk stand-ins.

Battle standard bearer

Gnoblars in snow

Converted pistol wielding maneaters

Reaper female ogre butcher

i'm really not a fan of the ice blue base edges....the snow effect is amazing though!!
Could i suggest a cooler blue/grey for the edges if you want the ice lake idea? i've never seen a bright blue frozen lake ;)

great start though matey!
Open your eyes or the pain will flood in, thought for today is not to give in.

How I Painted My Ogres!

How I Painted My Thundertusk!

How I Painted My Mournfangs!
Looking great! I am doing a Fire and Ice theme for my Ogres to! (As soon as I get some time) Where did you get that snow for the bases? When I try and make snowy bases for my models the snow always sinks into the glue and gets a weird color.... How did you get yours to stay so white and snow like? Thanks!

@dreadboy- yeah, those base edges....I am also not too sure if they are too bright blue...I am still thinking about it. I think I will wait until I have a whole unit complete to see how it looks on the movement tray to see how it looks. In any case, at least base edges are not too hard to fix painting wise... :P

Edit- as for bright blue ice lakes- just goggled some images:

So it is possible in glacier lakes...

@cmsheats- I was looking for some really realistic looking snow. I grew up in Germany and have some frosty memories of the winters there, so I decided to go with the look of snow at night fall: it has just started melting slightly during the day, but the cold of the night starts to put tiny sparkling ice crystals back onto it...
Here is the recipe for my snow: I mix PVA glue (which dries transparent), Gale force nine snow flakes
(http://www.flamesofwar.com/Default.aspx?tabid=287&CategoryID=13166&PageIndex=2) and some transparent kids glitter paint from the arts and crafts store. I mix it with a very high amount of snow flakes in it, so it gets very gritty when painted on (I use an old cheap brush for that).
What snow flock are you using? Before starting with my snow, I had a look at different options that are available. I dismissed baking soda- I know its cheap and a lot of people use it, but the grain size is just too small! I also am not a fan of the Games Workshop snow. There is also another company out there (I forgot the name) and their snow flock is not white, but transparent little grains which look like a miniature hailstorm. They are just too transparent for snow!
For me, the Gale Force nine snow has just the right grain size and the right icy white-transparent color.
Ok, thanks for the info! I am not sure what type of snow mine is,(I bought it in a random box from a guy) but it really doesn't work so good. I will have to try the Gale Force 9 stuff. Thank you for helping me out!

If you mix snow flock with white paint and PVA mixed together it retains it's whiteness better!
That might be all you need to fix it!
Maybe even put a dash of Space Wolf Grey in as snow isn't perfectly white anyway!
Or even better, put a base coat of SW Grey down under the flock/whitepaint/pva mix!

HG
Or even better, put a base coat of SW Grey down under the flock/whitepaint/pva mix!
This is what I was doing, except I used skull white. Maybe I should just try it again and see what I can do. Thanks for the help!

Some more progress during ANZAC day!

I painted up some more gnoblars-

And I experimented a bit with my frozen lake theme- these unlucky ogres were too heavy and have broken in! ;)

LOL! That's great! I really like that.  ;) Nice job on those.

looking pretty good! Have you thought about putting water effects on the bases?

How I Painted My Ogres!

How I Painted My Mournfangs!
Have to echo the sentiment on the bright blue base edging but the bases themselves are brilliant and i really like your unit fillers!
High Elves and Ogres Blog - my gaming blog covering painting, battle reports and colelcting on a budget!
I have a similar idea for more ogre bases....already using the ice blue sides....I think they help catch the eye.
I am considering trying to use some perspex to help with the frozen ice feel.

I really like the idea of your unit fillers....I think ther is every chance that there will but some unfortunate ogres in my army too :)
My Armies:
Empire
Ogres
Thanks for the feedback!
With the bright blue bases- I still have to wait until I finish more units and see how they look on the movement tray. I really dont want the blue to be overpowering!

@dreadboi: I never worked with water effects before-- therefore I am a bit hesitant using them...

@ warlordsteve: do it, add some drowing ogres- easy and fast to do if you have spare bits!

Finished the Leadbelchers and the tyrant.
The detail on the leadbelchers is not overly fantastic, because they had already been painted several times for another project....

I went for pale skin with dark blue flame tattoos.
This is to symbolize that this tribe (the "Cult of Fire") worships the all-consuming nature of fire.

The broken in ogres also got some treatment:

My tyrant, Lord Abraxas, ruler over dark hills and gloomy mountains.
On his shoulder his loyal pet, the vulture he calls "Laddie".
Now that the snow melt of early spring has come, his time for conquest has begun...

Special attention goes to THE hedgehog-

I know, biologically it should still be hybernating with all this snow, but it was just too cute not to add!

The vulture and the hedgehog are from the Reaper familiars range- I have a few more to add to other
models in the army. I think they are great to add some character.
Love (love!) the tats!

One point of criticism: mold lines on the canon.
Loving the tattoos. Nice job on those. The overall painting is very good to!

Thanks guys!

Concerning the mold lines- I try to remove them from my new models....
but those guys were pretty old and painted 3 times already- I think I was hoping the mold lines would not show.
Sigh. Didnt work so well, I guess.... ;)
Really not a big problem, man. Was just te only thing I could find to criticise ;)
Finished my Butcheress ogre (Shaman ogre model from Reaper).

This is a very fun model to paint with lots of great little details like a voodoo doll,
shriveled heads, deathcap mushrooms and a frog!
It is also a very heavy miniature (all metal) and I had to rest a lot in between painting
to avoid getting a cramp.
Some new toys to play with... :P
and more are on the way!!!!  :D

Now I can update my Ogre Achievements.... :)
On a different note.... :P

I also like models of other manufacturers than GW (as you might have noticed with mt Reaper models).
Did any of you have a look at the McVey models lately? They have some awesome stuff...I totally fell in love with Ruby (the cowgirl on the dinosaur) and bought it. Sadly I didnt feel I could do that awesome models justice- so Nuclealosaur/ Nuke Arts (a friend of mine who does professional painting (https://www.facebook.com/nukesarts) painted her up for me. Now she has a special place on my shelf....

That is a awesome mini! Man, I want one now.
