Chaos nurgle ogres - Extreme makeover edition

Well I started with this project as a 'few' minis just for fun and it seems as if it is turning into a army more or less so I thought it would be appropriate to post it here. This is to keep me more focused and to stay on track, as well as to hear the opinion of fellow Tyrants.

I have been laboring away at these minis now and I must say that I'm quite chuffed at how they turned out. Mainly as I usually don't like to paint my own conversions (i.e. the minis that's heavily converted), but these have been an exception. I found some errors or spots which could have received more attention, some have been corrected and others have been allowed to pass, overall I think that these are the best minis I have done  to this date. This is foremost reflected in the amount of time I put into the conversion and to the paintjobs.

My favorite spots on the standard bearer is the small shield on his right shoulder, the checkered cloth and the horn. I have been trying some new techniques and I'm quite happy with the results.

To your left is the leader of the troop and the one to the right is the tuba players. The leader is armed with a bardiche like axe and the characteristic square shield. The helm is inspired by the concept art from guild wars 2 and so is the necklace, the skirt is not the standard scale skirt but instead layers of torn rags. The coat will have receive more attention and will most likely be turned into some kind of brigandine or such.

The tuba player has been armed with a zulfiqar, the sword did not come out perfect but I'm quite happy with it. The forearm which is holding the sword is made by some old bead I found and if it looks nice when it has been painted and detailed I might go and add some to other future ogres as I have a abundance of these beads.

I had some discussions with my good friend Cassarus the other day and we started to talk about what I was going to use as gnoblars. He had insisted on hobgoblins for some time now and I have  been quite anti that idea... until I tried this:

LOTR mordor orc + gnoblar head + assorted bitz and a chunk of grey stuff =



The pic is a bit dark and I think that the skin color came out a bit to dark. But this was only a test, future hobgoblins will be more greyish/red and brighter. I posed it with the finished ogres to give a sense of how it fits with the theme. Don't worry about the base of the hobgoblin as it is not finished yet.

Now comes the crucial question, do they fit the nurgle army? I think they do as they are a greenskin (ish) just like the gnoblars (which makes it more clear what this army 'counts as'). By using a LOTR mini as a base it looks somewhat different and I kind of like that, the proportions looks a lot better and I think I managed to incorporate enough of the general warhammer fantasy feel to the mini. Future plans for hobgoblins is more chaos insignias shown but I want to keep the scavenger feel as well so this will be kind of hard.

If I go with hobgoblins I could add sneaky gits as trappers (which would be awesome!) and I would probably add some hobhounds as fillers to my hobgoblins regiment.

I'm not a 100% sure yet on the hobgoblin so I'm making 3 more and when the 4 are done I will make my final judgment. But until they are done I want your opinion on them:
do they fit the theme?
should I base them on other minis?

Also nice to see Nurgle ogres that aren´t just plastic bulls with loads of chaos spawn bits.

Keep them pictures coming. I´d love to see more of the ogres as well as the hobgoblins!

The conversions and paintjob is stunning but I don't like the bases. It would look better if it was 1/5 of the current height.

I'm really happy how they turned out (bar a few details), but I think that I'm settled on this idea. I tried some different approaches on the skin, I tried both the classic green - but I thought that it looked weird with my ogres, I tried a more orange look - but that looked to cartoony - So in the end I went for this semi skin/red colored theme which I think makes them look more fitting in the overall theme. For some reason I have this mental picture of hobgoblins being red so I guess that's why they look like this. I feel like converting a hundred of these fellows but I will have to resist the urge to buy them and wait until my economy allows such spending.

I have also made quite some progress on the tuba player and he is almost done, pics will come when I have finished the last details and the base but it will probably be after the weekend.

Real life is starting to call for my attention for the coming two weeks so we shall see how much time I have to build on this army.. .but I think that I will have a hard time not to

++ UPDATE 28/3 ++

So no big update on the horizon but a sneakpeak on what I'm working on these days.
I have been thinking about making some cool trolls and use them as yetis, my concept is a troll that have been sleeping in the ground for some years and then suddenly started to walk around again, with rocks, moss, grass, gravel and small twigs still attached to it's back. So far I have only started one head  but here goes

Inspiration majorly from Warplock monkeys and his great trolls but also from John Bauer (Cassarus insisted) and some other stuff.

I think I will arm them with some ancient flintstone weapons or bone swords.. I have not decided yet, any ideas welcome.

So I have been working a bit on the minis so time to show the effort with some updates on the army.

Not quite finsihed with these yet as I still need to paint the sheild for the champ and many small details on them both. I'm not over the moon with these two but they will do. The main conern is the fur on the musican and the helm of the champ.

Another rank and file ogre made from Golgfags ogres from the previous edition. This mini is built from orc arms, skaven plague monk flail, some marauder horsemen bitz, a part from a broken phone (helm visor). some Dark eldar chains etc. I'm liking the more relaxed pose of this one and now I only have about 50% left on the back before some final detailing and then painting.  This ogre is to join the same block as the previous guys.


A early prototype of a leadbelcher. The idea is to have grenadiers instead of cannoners and I will equip him with a two handed sword to represent the melee capability of the leadbelcher profile. The green blob on the grenade is a test to do smoke effects, I'm not sold on it yet but after painting I will decide if it stays or not.


A wierd pic of the troll as it is shiney and the angle is abit off as well. Anyhow I think it is progressing quite fine as0 sculpting minis from scratch is a big task and I'm still in my first steps. The planned detail will probably bring him alive more than this misreable state.

and last I have a bit of a teaser (no it is not a chaos dwarf, it is the start of a hero choice)

++Update++ 7/4

Worked a bit more on the ogre bulls and they are almost done bar a few details. This means that I have my first unit 50% done and it feels great to be on the right track.



So last night was quite productive and I got the bases almost done and made some of the touch ups. The troll also got the start of his second arm and I think that this will be finished tonight. I like how the troll looks but it will change quite drastically when I start to add the earth, mud, rocks and whatnots on the back of it.

Here is some more pictures on the hero, a sulfur shaman (counts as firebelly). I wanted something more nurgly than a firebelly and yet something which was fitting the nurgle and ogre world without being all rotten and OTT. I loved the idea of having beard on this mini for some reason and my friend and inspiration Cassarus suggested a chaos dwarf beard. After some attempts I settled for a more braided look than the chaos dwarfs, this adds to the norse theme in my eyes and makes it fit better with the rest of the army. The mini is based a circle orbos mini from Warmachine. The bits I used came from the chaos warrior kit (helm), the axe is from the 40k chaos terminators and the bit on the end of the shaft is from the marauder horsemen box. The smoke thing came from the skaven plague furnace and the shoulderpad from the marauder box. Quite a bit of sculpting was done in order to make the miniature less ripped and more fitting with the others. I still have cleaning up and a few things to sculpt on it so it is not done yet.

Right now I'm stuck with the troll (no pics as my camera died and I'm trying to find the recharger). I decided not to add a club or weapon of any kind as it made the troll look.. .well not as I had envisioned. I instead added a dead tree which he holds his right hand on. This makes the mini look like it is hunting or stalking something/someone. I also added debris to his back and I'm very happy how that worked out. However I feel that the design has deviated a bit too much from my force. There is for example no ties to chaos or nurgle on the mini which makes it look somewhat unconnected to the rest.
I'd really appreciate if you guys would give me some feedback on these ideas (or even add your own!):
*Adding a horn, my concept art had it and I think it would look good as the tusks + horn would create a nurgle icon together. This idea would be cool as it is bringing the mini closer to the rest in much the same manner as the dragon toad from FW did  to general nurgle stuff.

*Adding some mutation, small spikes, some scales and such. Nothing major but small stuff that ties it closer to the rest.

*Add a loincloth + some stuff in a rope belt. It could work but I think that it would take away some of the feral aspects of the mini...

*your idea?

I'm stuck and I would love if you had any ideas.

Id vote for some simple cloth details and some rope, maybe some trophys/fetiches etc. Theres far to little Bauer over GWs trolls IMO and yours really has some potential

++UPDATE 24/4++

After a hiatus I'm back. Real life got in the way with documents needed to be written and started a new job as a gym instructor as well as a funeral. But I have not been inactive (that only applies for the forum activity ) as I have sculpted quite a bit on different minis. I was lucky to receive 5 old minotaurs which was introduced to my friends mr.clipper and mrs.file, after a quite a bit of work I started to add armor and the basics. So far it is not much to show but I have at least started them.

I finished up sculpting the troll and went for a horn + spikey bits as well as some pustules and such to bring the troll closer to the theme. I'm quite happy with it so far but remember that it is still in heavy PIP and so is the gent next to him

God it has been ages since I updated this, well after starting a new job and getting more hours means that I get more money but less time for minis. Well I have done some work on them at least.

Next up is the start of my ironguts, they will be based on last edition minotaurs (kindly donated by Cassarus), this one will probably be the leader but I'm not sure yet. They will be armed with halberds and this one is made from a chaos knight 'lance' and a ogre sword. The feet are from the new O&G boar riders (excellent sculpts!). The mini still needs lots of detail and I'm a bit out of ideas for the head and so - ideas are welcome for the helmets.



I really like where these are going, but I need to add some more nurgle details and so. I think that the helmet will set the mood so keep in mind that I'm looking for 'nurglish' helmets.

I also started to convert some O&G boars to be my sabertusks but alas they looked too boring with only some warts added, I instead went crazy and added some hobgoblin riders made from isengard Warg riders from the LoTR range. Still WIP but I like these a lot better even if the mini is bit overkill for the statlines.

By the way, I have tried liquid greenstuff on some minis now and I have to say that the stuff is great for some(!) details, a good addition for smoothing out stuff and blending different materials.

Well if one boar rider didn't catch your attention maybe five will they are all in wip and I'm adding some pouches and other stuff to enhance the looter feel I want for these bad boys.



I also found a plaguetower that I started years ago... I will rework quite a few details on t and give it a new cannon (tri-barreled) and add some wheels. This will be my counts as iron blaster.. still I don't know how it will fit the army but that is a later issue.

Your army might be Chaos Nurgle, but that's one of the cleanest workplaces I;ve seen.

I simply love your work by the way. It motivates me to practice greenstuff. I have a long, long way to go. But maybe, some day, I'll be able to do what you're doing.

Well not much to show now as the days are mostly spent working or studying for work. But I managed to squeeze in a few moments here and there of sweet converting. Here's the fruit of my labor.

The irongut champion is starting to get there.  I added a sword from the O&G boar riders and the 'boss pole' from Gorbad. I really like that piece and I think that it fits the theme quite well. I also (and perhaps most notable) added a head, the one with the nose ring and sad expression from the old mutation sprue. It looks a bit small but compared to the other ogres it is just about perfect size for these boys. I wanted to keep the same head size as the bulls as if the ironguts had swelled with deamonic energy i.e. more muscles/fat/body frame but same bone structure (more or less). I also added some protective bars which was shamelessly stolen from Banes great nurgle warband   Still there are some details to fix but I'm happy with this guy so far.

Next up are my grenadiers (or leadbelchers). The one to the right is mostly done only awaiting  final detailing and sharpening of some stuff as well as some smoothening liquid green stuff loving.I wanted a bit of a crazy look on these fellows as they wield exotic grenades instead of cannons. I struggled with the idea for melee weapons for a long time and settled with some kind of flailish thing which is fixed to the armor. I'm pretty happy with it so far and it gives the mini a different look which was something I wanted as these guys are specialists.

Not too much to show this time but I thought that I should at least keep you guys updated.

The 'son of sulfur' aka firebelly lv.1 is getting there. I'm very happy with the sulfur/fire/smoke and the verdigris. Working on the grime and details now as well as glazing the skin.


The boars are more or less all in this stage now i.e. not too much to show but it some kind of progress at least.

Having a few days off from work now so expect updates folks

These guys are so eerie - I love the way they seem to be peering out from behind their helmets, like they might creep off their bases and cause some trouble.

Great conversion work on these guys, and I love how your painting style is doing justice to all the hard work.

Love the theme and execution here.  Much respect for your ability to make them properly "Nurgley" but not be sloppy messes.  Really creative ideas for the sabers too!

Any thoughts of what you'll do if anything for a TT or SH?  Please say nasty toad dragon conversion. *crosses fingers

Another half eternity has past since last updates... I still blame real life for it! I have tons of work to atm so the hobby is getting a bit pushed aside for the time being. However every now and then I have time to fiddle with the minis and here are some early WIPs of my hunters. I went for hobgoblins but not for sneaky gits as I first intended. Instead I went with a feral hobgoblin idea. I think of them as the hobgoblins that are ferocious and feral, still not domesticated into the ranks of more organized societies (i.e. chaos dwarf). They are feral, primitive and bloodthirsty little buggers which are feared by other hobgoblins as rumors say that they are cannibals and gravedesicraters.

For the minis I turned to the new Hobbit range and got a pack of the hunter orcs. I then pillaged my Dark elf/dark eldar bit box as well as throwing in some gnoblar bits. I'm quite happy with them so far, and there will be a filler on the back ranks.

Agree with the above!  Very nice indeed.  I know a Chaos Dwarf player in Bristol that did a similar thing for his hobgoblins.  He used skaven bodies with gnoblar heads and some trimming here and there of hair which came out quite well.
